Wiltshire Lookup Requests / James Halliday Grinyer, North Tidworth
« on: Tuesday 03 April 18 11:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I've found that James Halliday Grinyer was buried on 2 May 1953 in Holy Trinity Churchyard, North Tidworth, from the Wiltshire memorial Inscription Index 46371. However, I don't know whether this is simply referring to an entry in the burial register or an existing headstone. Should there be a headstone, and anyone reading this would be able to put me in touch with someone local who would be able to take a photograph, I would be very grateful (as I don't live in the UK). I realise that this request is rather demanding, but thank you for reading it anyway.

South Africa / Nicholas Robert Burcher, 1862-1936 Durban
« on: Friday 24 November 17 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Would anyone be able to find information concerning Nicholas Robert Burcher's movements in South Africa?
Born in Windsor in 1862, the last trace to be found of him is in London in 1896. He was a printers compositor, not married, and according to the  Probate records from the Master of the Supreme Court (on familysearch website) he was found dead by the proprietor of the Seaside Hotel in Durban who 'saw the dead body' on 27th October 1936.
I'd like to know where he lived and where he worked and what the 'dead body' meant.
Maybe there would be information in a newspaper, but I haven't been able to find any South African newspaper pre-1945 online.
I have found a photo of his death memorial erected by his sister (who lived in London) in Stellawood cemetery.  I also have passenger lists for 1927 when he returned to England to see his sister.
Thank you for any other information you're able to offer.

Would anyone have access to Turner's Hill parish registers? I can't find anything online and am looking for Quickenden & Lucas families 1893 onwards. Thank you for any help or advice you're able to offer.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Sompting Sussex, date of photo?
« on: Wednesday 12 July 17 13:27 BST (UK)  »
This lady might be my grandfather's sister. Her name was Ellen Lisher and she was born 1857 and married Charles Grenyer in Sompting, Sussex in 1879. Would somebody be able to put a date on the photo from the clothes that they are wearing? Thank you for any enlightenment.

The Common Room / Who was ‘My boy Thomas’ in Jane Lussher’s will 1552?
« on: Sunday 25 June 17 10:48 BST (UK)  »
Good morning from Belgium.
In 1552 Jane Lussher, widow of Thomas Lussher left legacies in her will to her grandson Nycholas Lussher -  "my nevye", notably hangings, bedstead, bolster, coverlets, etc.
To her son Wylliam -  a gylt salt without a cover, plus bedstead, featherbed, blankets, linen and and hangings in her chamber.
To her son in law Richard Cresswell and his sister Mabel 20 shillings each.
“Also I wyll and bequethe to Thomas my boy whyche I broght up of a chylde 20s.”
The will was proved in 1559.

My question concerns the “boy” Thomas (who could well be my ancestor).
Mary  Lussher’s husband, in his will,  also spoke of his father’s “boy”, meaning, I think, a servant.
I was wondering if in this case, Thomas might have been an orphan child that the family took in and brought up. Would it be possible that they gave him the name Lussher?

Thank you for any enlightenment.

Family History Beginners Board / Baptism on Good Friday - customary or not?
« on: Monday 19 June 17 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm not exactly a beginner, but as I don't post messages that frequently, I always have the same problem when I log in, that is - I never know how or where to send a post. I've looked at the instructions and I can't see where the moderator in red is to be found, so if anyone can advise me for another time, then I will put the reply in my favourites, so as to do it properly next time.

My question is a general one. One of my ancestors had her (illegitimate) son baptised on 12 April 1748 (in Broadwater, Sussex) which was Good Friday. I don't know what the custom was at that time in the Church of England, but I would have thought that the Minister would have waited until Easter Day to baptise the child. Was it normal practice to christen a child on Good Friday? I would have thought not... If anyone is 'in the know', I'd be very grateful to learn if it was customary or not to do so. In this case, it may well be that the child was in danger of dying (I have no further trace of him - not even a burial) and understandably it would then have been a 'private baptism'. Thanks to all for any enlightenment.

Kent / Benenden Casualty Clearing station WW2 - same message twice
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Would anyone be able to give me any information about N°7 Casualty Clearing station in Benenden during WW2. Where was it exactly? One of my relatives in the Royal Artillery died there from gunshot wounds (friendly fire??). There was an inquest held at Cranbrook on 22 September 1941 by Eric Clarke, Coroner for the Cranbrook district...
I'd be grateful for any enlightenment.
Thanks a lot.
Best wishes,
PS - Sorry, I think I posted this message in the wrong place at first. I've never yet got the hang of how to send a message properly...

World War Two / Bomb? at Caterham Guards Barracks 1 Sept 1940
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 09:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me? One of my relatives, Stanley Lisher of the Coldstream Guards was killed on 1 September 1940, together with several others. He is buried or commemorated in Brookwood Military Cemetery. I heard that a bomb hit Caterham Barracks, but there is absolutely nothing to be found on the internet or in the Newspaper Archive. It all appears to be very "hush-hush" (Maybe the Germans weren't to know about it at the time?). Would anyone have any information on this - if so, I'd be very grateful to learn of the circumstances.
Thanks a lot! :)
