Family History Beginners Board / Signatures on certificates
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm not new, but wasn't sure where to put this post and thought here might be the best place. I've been going back through the records I have for my Great Grandma and her parents with a criticial eye to check everything I've got so far is correct, as far as I can be certain at least. One thing has jumped out at me today, which I've never noticed before...

Mary Jane Bailey marries George Henry Roberts in the parish of St Stephens, Hulme on 25th May 1884. They both sign their names, hers isn't great... Mary is ok, then it goes a bit wobbly. She's 17 and has no profession. Her father is listed as William Bailey, doesn't say he is deceased although I believe he was, not sure if this was a consent issue if she was 17? I haven't identified either of the witnesses to the marriage either.

On 8th June 1884 Mary Jane Roberts gives birth to Georgina Roberts and registers the birth on 29th July 1884. In the box on Georgina's birth certificate that says signature, description and residence of informant there is an X which says mark of Mary Jane Roberts.

Now I've had a quick look at a couple of other birth certifcates I've scanned in on to my tree and I can't see a noticeable difference in the hand writing on this section - they aren't original copies but I do remember signing my daughter's. If she's not very literate could it just be that she can't spell her newly married surname? Or could it be something else? I'll add attachments in a mo...

Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Surname help please - Completed
« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My great grandfather Isaac Frost is part of his cousin's household in the 1901 census in the Regent Road area of Salford. I hadn't explored sideways for his aunts and uncles so I've started but so far haven't found the connection so I thought I'd work backwards instead from the head of house but I'm stuck. He's been transcribed as John C or John Charles Aron in the 1901 and the 1911 census, but having not been able to find any other documents for him, his wife or children I can only think his surname is transcribed incorrectly...

I've attached the 1901 census below and will attach the 1911 one afterwards...

Many thanks,

Cheshire / Nantwich area - home for unmarried mothers?
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there was a home (or similar) for unmarried mothers in Nantwich, or close by, in the early 1900s? The date I'm looking at was early-mid WWI so I'm not sure if that would have had an impact or not. She did keep the baby and married a different man in the early 1930s and had two more children that I know of. Haven't seen a baptism record pop up either.

I know I'll prob need to order a birth certificate, but that will have to wait til January pay day whilst its Christmas ;D

Any help local knowledge would be appreciated. Googling hasn't brought anything up as yet....

Lancashire / Margaret Melbourne Bate Croft/Winwick/Warrington
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm a little stuck with one of my hubby's ancestors, I'm not sure if I'm missing something or looking for something that doesn't exist.

From Census records I believe she was born in Croft, Warrington around 1825/1827.

The first post 1836 record I have for her is in the 1841 Census where she is living in a household on Butter Market Street. There is a family where the head is a surgeon and several people with the same surname, then Margaret and a few other people with a different surname as possible borders/domestic servants.

Then in 1846 she marries Joseph Ashbrook and her father is listed as John Bate. I had wondered if she had been widowed and looked for a marriage for Margaret Bate to a Mr Melbourne but couldn't find one. Then I found a little more detail to the marriage and she is showing as a spinster. So should I assume she was born out of wedlock?

Name   Joseph Ashbrook
Event Type   Marriage
Event Date   28 Dec 1846
Event Place   St James, Latchford, Cheshire, England
Gender   Male
Age (Formatted)   26y
Marital Status   Single
Father's Name   Samuel Ashbrook
Spouse's Name   Margaret Melbourne
Spouse's Marital Status   Single
Spouse's Father's Name   John Bate

The census information from 1851 to 1911 state that Margaret was born in Croft. I know the parish church at Croft wasn't built until early 1830s and that St Oswalds at Winwick was the parent church. St Oswalds do have some parish records on line but I can't find a Melbourne baby that fits. There are baptisms of children of a John Bate around the same period but there are a fair few Bate records so it might not be the same man.

Am I looking for something that might not exist or is there somewhere else I should be looking for Margaret Melbourne?

Lancashire / Beswick Place or Buildings, Brownlow Street, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 01:21 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across any mention of, old photos or reference to Beswick Place on Brownlow Street in Liverpool?

I have a child in my tree born in March 1878 then baptised 18 August 1878 and her address is given as 4 Beswick Place, Brownlow Street, Liverpool. She sadly dies and is burried a few days after her baptism at Walton Park on 21 Aug 1878 and her address is given as 4 Brownlow Street. A year later in Aug 1879 their next child is born and baptised and the address changes slightly again to 4 Beswick Buildings, Brownlow Street. More confusingly I've found second baptisms for some of the children at a Roman Catholic church  ??? would this be if Mum was Catholic and Dad was not maybe? They're round the corner at Pembroke St 2 Court No 5 in 1881.

I wondered if it had been the address for the workhouse or infirmary but I've read other posts that suggest the infirmary was 144 Brownlow Street? I can see a mix of buildings on the right hand side with google maps if you're looking down with Pembroke Street to your right and the buildings that were formerly the workhouse to your left but I can't see anymore.

4 Brownlow Street now comes up as part of the university and the Jane Herdman building, but from what I can find it was purpose built in the early 1900s.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Street in Hulme
« on: Monday 08 August 16 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher what the street name on this burial is please? The burial was in 1871 and the same street name also seems to appear for the family on the 1871 census and I can't read that either :( There is no address on his baptism record a couple of months earlier.

Lancashire / Help! My Baileys are hiding again!
« on: Tuesday 26 July 16 17:45 BST (UK)  »
My Baileys are in hiding again :( and I need a fresh set of eyes please in case I'm missing something obvious. I've previously posted about Mary Jane Bailey who falls off radar but then possibly ends up in Prestwich Asylum where she dies.

Henry Bailey, born circa Q2 1863 in Welshpool, is the second son of William b. 1842 d.1878) and Mary Bailey (b.1844). They are in Pool Middle, Welshpool in 1871 census then in the Regent Road area of Salford in 1881. They were in Gorton for a while in between as there are baptism records from Henry's younger sisters and family members also pop up in Hulme. William dies in 1878 leaving Mary a widow in her mid 30s with 6 children. I'm missing quite a few of them in 1891 but some of them pop up again with getting married or having children but some have disappeared and I can't find any record for them. Any help would be gratefully received. I'm currently stuck with...

Sarah Elizabeth Bailey. b. circa 1870 Welshpool - missing from the 1881 census so possibly died as a child but haven't been able to find a death record.

Henry Bailey. b.1963 Welshpool - last seen on the 1881 census.

David Aldred William Bailey. b. 1862 Welshpool. Marries Charlotte Large in 1883 and they are living together in Ordsall in 1891 the he disappears.

I've been going through the documents and things I've found in case I've missed anything but they are puzzling me. Again! Any help is gratefully rec'd.

Thank you :D

Updated:

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Lloyd ????Pool Middle, Welshpool
« on: Monday 25 July 16 14:37 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone read this address please from the Welsh 1971 Census.

I believe it says Llloyd something, then
???? Street below it?

I thought it said Lloyd Cottage at first on Broad Street but I'm not so sure. Not the best handwriting. William Bailey was mistranscribed as William Hailey, undestandable. His wife below is Mary Bailey then one of their children, David Alfred William Bailey. My Bailey line baffle me and are good at hiding, strange handwriting doesnt help  ;) I thought I'd go back through what I already have and look again.

Thank you :)

My great great Grandfather's brother ends up in Withington Workhouse in 1904, his family stay in the family home, I wish I knew why he was there! He shows as a patient rather than an inmate in the 1911 census before he dies there in 1913. I can't read the first part of the address. His next of kin is stated wife Emma at the same address. They are at 29 Ellesmere Street, Gorton in the 1901 census and Emma and the children are at 3 Bryson Grove, Gorton.

There are a few registers for the workhouse which he appears in...
1902 - admitted 15 March and discharged 25 Nov 1902 - no address given.
1905-1908 - no address details
1908 - no address details
1909-1910 the address is listed very clearly as 5 Ivy Street
1910-1911 same as above

Does anyone know what this one might say? Thank you
