World War Two / 5/7/44 shot down France
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 18:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

Help please, if possible.
Morning of 5th July 1944 Lancaster bomber LM125 was shot down near Apremont, France.
Story goes that it narrowly missed a house and landed in a tree.
All crew died and are buried at Creil.
The house occupants were witnesses and apparently there is a photograph in existance.
I have read somewhere that the witnesses gave their story but I cannot find it.  Some members of my family did, at some point, go out there but of the surviving ones, cannot remember any details.
Can anyone help me with where to go track down the witness statements and, very unlikely I know, any chance of finding the photograph?

Thanks!
Kate

Scotland / lost cause - Jane McLeod - married William Tough in 1928
« on: Wednesday 30 September 15 01:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi there!

I'm really not good at this but I reckon this is a lost cause even for you guys.   :-\

Trying to search on my Aunt's behalf - nothing is known about her mum, she wouldn't discuss her life with them!! (her children)

The mystery woman is Jane McLeod - married William Tough in 1928  - parents listed as George McLeod & Margaret Clark McLeod  (Malone)
The children didn't even have this info!!
.... and that's about it.

Family myth has it:- that she was in an orphanage from fairly young, which burnt down.
her father was 'a highlander'
just before she died - dementia or Alzheimer's - she only spoke gaelic which none of her children understood so loads of missed opportunities there probably.
ages are all wrong apparently - William is thought to have been born 1904 and didn't want his wife listed on the m/c as older than him.
it was thought to be spelt McCloud (her children were quite determined about that)

I think that's pretty much all I have.  Any ideas guys??

Thanks for reading

Derry (Londonderry) / Porter - Derry - 1901 census
« on: Friday 15 May 15 23:20 BST (UK)  »
1st post here so I hope right!

Hi All,  I've hit a brick wall and wonder if some nice person can help point me in the right direction.
I have the Porter family on the 1901 census in Derry but cannot find them before or after that.  Married at Long Tower church according to Roots Ireland but a genealogist I met at Proni told me the record didn't exist.  No answer to my emails from Long Tower.

Edward Porter  63
Mary Porter      60
Patrick McCloskey  35
Mary McCloskey     30
Bridget             7
Sarah               6
Patrick              4
Hugh                7mths
+ Boarders

63 + 60 are too old to emigrate (I'm thinking), My great grandmother Mary McCloskey came over to Scotland by 1903 but it seems that only Sarah came with her.  Can't find anything on any of the others.  Family legend has it that Bridget died.

Any ideas gratefully received.  Sorry for so long a message!
Thanks x
