Kildare / Naas Gaol, Prisoner for Tithe Arrears 1838
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have found a reference to a 75-year-old man, a publican and farmer, Peter Folliard, of Naas, who was arrested for Tithe arrears in 1838. He was kept at the Naas Gaol.

I have a couple of questions with which I hope other RootsChat members may be able to help me.

Were records kept about prisoners at Naas Gaol in 1838? If so, do they still exist and where can they be viewed?

Would useful records exist about publicans? and of insolvencies?

It is known that Peter Folliard's arrest was mentioned in the Freeman's Journal and before that the Register. Were there any local newspapers that may have dealt with issues in Naas in 1838?

Also, I'd love to contact anyone researching Folliard/Follard/Fullard etc. in Kildare, Dublin or Meath.

Thanks,
Aillin

Oxfordshire / Gascoigne, Oxfordshire, 17th Century
« on: Tuesday 22 January 08 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone is researching the GASCOIGNE/GASKIN family in Oxfordshire in the 17th Century in places such as Taynton, Bampton, Standlake, Bloxham and Banbury.

I'm interested in the family of Stephen GASCOIGNE m. Katherine HAMPSON who were associated with Taynton, Bampton and Standlake. I believe Stephen was the son of Cornelius GASCOIGNE and Dorothy WALWYN  baptised 1612 in London, and I wonder how or if Cornelius was related to the GASCOIGNE families in Bloxham and Banbury?

Any help in sorting out the different GASCOIGNE families in Oxfordshire in the 17th century would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Occupation Interests / College Servants, Oxford
« on: Tuesday 22 January 08 13:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
My ancestor James PRESTON and some of his sons were College Servants in Oxford in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Does anyone know, would records of their employment still exist?
Does the term 'College servant' cover all servants who worked at the colleges, or was this a particular type of servant?

Thanks,

Ireland / 'DeRenzie Percival' or 'Percival DeRenzie'
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know of, or have anyone in their family tree with the given names 'DeRenzie Percival' or 'Percival DeRenzie' (or a very similar name like Derenzy Percy)?
I have a DeRenzie Percival FULLERTON in my family tree (b 1884 Queensland, Australia). His ancestors came from County Kildare. I am trying to find the origin of his unusual name. I know the DeRenzie family were landed gentry in Ireland, but I don't know what connection there could be to my agricultural labourer FULLERTONs.
I have found others with similar names in Australia (particularly Queensland), including a Derenzie Percival QUILL whose ancestors came from County Kerry, and a De Renzie Percy Brett WILSON a stockbroker in the early 1900s living in Queensland ( I know nothing else about him).

Was there a famous person with this name?
There is a family story that this name has something to do a soldier who was in the Spanish War (the Peninsular War?) and married a Spanish girl. The name 'Marcella' may have something to do with it.

Any help would be most appreciated.  :)

Armed Forces / FULLERTON Thomas, 58th Regt., 1828, Naas, Co. Kildare, IRE
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 03:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone may be able to help.
I'm interested in finding out more about a Thomas FULLERTON who was apparently in the 58th Regiment in 1828. I've found a Church of Ireland Baptism for his daughter, Mary FULLERTON, at Naas, County Kildare, Ireland in 1828. Thomas' wife was named Agnes.

I was curious because I have been looking for my G G Great Grandfather, William FULLERTON, an agricultural labourer from County Kildare who married Mary DUNNE and arrived in Port Phillip, Australia as assisted immigrants in 1840. William and Mary were Catholic. The baptism above intrigued me because I have been told a family story about a soldier in the 'Spanish War' (the Peninsular War?) who may have married a Spanish girl. Also, one of William & Mary FULLERTON's grandchildren was named Agnes (my G Grandmother).

I could be on the wrong track... but anything might help!

I don't know what area of County Kildare my FULLERTONs came from, but other Kildare passengers on the same immigrant ship were married in Clane.
I have found very few FULLERTONs in County Kildare. One other was a Mick FULLERTON m. Eliza BROWN in 1845 in the Catholic parish of Kill, Kildare.

Any further information about Thomas FULLERTON from the 58th Regt. or any FULLERTONs in County Kildare would be most appreciated. Any clues are helpful  :)

The names 'Marcella'  and 'Derenzie Percival' could also have something to do with this family.

Thanks.
Regards,
Aillin

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Newnham Murren - PRs Lookup - HUTTON
« on: Friday 27 April 07 08:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have found a marriage in the Oxfordshire Marriage Index which I am interested in.
I wonder if SKS who has access to PRs/or PR Transcripts from the Newnham Murren area might be able to check the following for me. Any help would be most appreciated.

Marriage:
HUTTON   John  m.   FILLBEE   Grace   25-Oct 1756 Newnham Murren
Is there any further information given about this couple on the PRs?

The IGI doesn't list any children in Newnham Murren for this couple.
Are there any occupations given for any of the HUTTONs in Newnham Murren?
Is there a burial for either John or Grace in/near this parish?

Thanks,

Aillin,

Leicestershire / J. HARMER - Leicester 1840
« on: Sunday 14 January 07 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I am interested in finding out more about a Mr. J. HARMER who apparently lived at either 48 or 49 Castle St, Leicester, in about 1840.

In the "History, Gazetteer & Directory of Leicestershire & Rutland, 1846" there is a John HARMER living in Bedford St, Leicester. I don't know if this could be the correct J. HARMER.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Aillin,
