Leicestershire / Two streets - how close together?
« on: Friday 26 February 21 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Back in Leicester in the mid 1800s how close would Belgrave Gate have been to Lower Church Street. Does anyone know if 201, Belgrave Gate might have had some significance back then - say a workhouse address? I have managed to get photos online of both areas but can't seem to find out how close together they were. I would be grateful to find out anything about this.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Skirlaugh
« on: Monday 17 August 20 15:57 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to see if I can find an image of The Carpenters Arms in Skirlaugh during the 1850s and 1860s. I have an ancestors who was the landlord there during this time. His name was Josiah Johnson, I would love to be in touch with anyone else who is also descended from this chap. The Johnsons are a difficult family to research. How big is this village? It seems to have been almost totally populated by Johnsons.  :D

Bedfordshire / Missing person Vera Harrison
« on: Friday 26 June 20 18:01 BST (UK)  »
My fathers sister seemed to disappear just after WW2. The last address we have for her was in 1947 166, Hurst Grove, Queens Park, Bedford. My father went to The Salvation Army to ask for their help but without any luck. No one in the family ever heard from her again. Her name was Vera Harrison and she was born in 1919 in Sheffield. I was just wondering if there might be someone who can give me some idea on how I would go about trying to find out what happened to her? Perhaps she remarried and had a family. Any suggestions or advice gratefully received.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Help with theory
« on: Sunday 14 June 20 17:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a theory that the father of my paternal grandmother might also have been her grandfather. Is it possible for me to be able to tell if this might be true from my DNA results? Please don't be too technical when trying to explain to me. I have to admit that I am still learning about how to use DNA results. Thanks for any help or advice.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Obituaries
« on: Saturday 06 June 20 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to search obituary archives for Hull online? I am looking for any record of the death of an ancestor in 1953. I'm trying to find out if he ever married and having a name like Johnson there are so many but his middle name was Octavius which surely can't be that common. He didn't marry before 1911 and the records on Find My Past rarely give the fathers name during this time frame. I've also search Public Member Trees on Ancestry to see if anyone else had managed to find a wife but no-one has. I'm out of ideas. He was a stonemason if that might give someone a possible lead.  ???

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Clustering
« on: Saturday 21 March 20 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am on Ancestry and have done the clustering. I am trying to find my maternal grandfather. Could some kind person explain to me what I do next, please. If you could keep the explanation simple I would be grateful. The clustering would seem like a really good thing but their potential is a little lost on me at the moment. Please, I need help.  ???

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Johnson
« on: Saturday 07 March 20 09:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have spent the afternoon going around in ever decreasing circles trying to unravel the Johnson section of my tree. Then I thought that I'd leave it for a while and see if any of the public member trees had anything useful to offer, Guess what - the main chap I was researching had three different wives depending upon which tree you looked at. At least I know it's not just me who has trouble with Johnsons. I think I'll keep doing my own research and leave them to it. Sad thing is that each one of them thinks that they have it right but we all know that only one of them has - or perhaps not.
It is now a few more hours on from the first part of this post. I have found that 3 people named George Johnson all married women named Mary. One in 1819 and two in 1924 - all different Mary's. All living in the same area too. I looked at the 1841 census and all have children with similar names in the family. I've gone on Findmypast and looked at all children born to George Johnsons and Mary's in that time period and that area. Still not conclusive. Has anyone got anything other ideas which I can try? I'm looking at occupations now and awaiting the arrival of a marriage certificate in the hope that this may help. Why couldn't my ancestors have rarer names like Frobisher or Carruthers.  ::) Oh and one of the Mary's has the surname Smith. I could have wept.  :'(

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Am I doing the right thing?
« on: Friday 28 February 20 09:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I find DNA a little confusing so need to know if I am doing the right thing or just wasting my time. I am trying to find out who my maternal grandfather was and have a suspect in mind.

I have generated a family tree for him for both his maternal and paternal sides back as far as grandparents using all siblings as well. Then I have checked all the surnames this has produced and matched them with the people on my DNA results list. There are so many that I began to feel optimistic. I am now going thru each one searching for a connection. This is taking ages but it will be worth it if I do find what I'm looking for.

It did occur to me that perhaps ThruLines might help and so I have entered all the details of my potential grandfather's tree which I'd done onto my tree hoping that ThruLines might come up with
the right line to check. Was this the right thing to do do you reckon?

I have looked at public member's trees but it doesn't actually tell you if that person has done a DNA test only that IF they have then you aren't a match. It would be useful to know if they have or not because if they have and I am not a match then I know that that this potential grandfather isn't the one I'm searching for. Is there any way of finding this out?

Any help gratefully received but, please, keep it simple and don't get too technical with me as I'm easily confused.  ???

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA connections
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 09:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am on Ancestry and did a DNA test a couple of years ago but I don't feel that I understand it as fully as I could or should. Can anyone just explain this to me please - I have a result of someone said to be 2nd -3rd cousin but we cannot find the connection. I have 1st cousins who have also been tested and through this have worked out that the unknown connection must be on my father's line. When I look at her tree details the names shown there that we have in common are on my father line. So this must mean that Ancestry know that our connection is on that line as we also have surnames in common on my mum's side but they are not listed. Is this likely?
