Lancashire / Mary Brumfitt of Preston
« on: Friday 24 June 16 20:30 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the family of Mary Brumfitt and her mother Elizabeth.
Mary Brumfitt daughter of Elizabeth a servant of Everton Gardens baptised 11 Dec 1825 Preston St John.
Elizabeth Brumfitt 26 of Vauxhall Rd. Buried 4 Jan 1827 at Preston St John's . If this is the mother could  Mary have ended up in the workhouse and which one ?
In 1841 there is only one family of Brumfitt that I have found in Preston ,John and Frances with a daughter Mary age 9.and other children.
There is a Mary the correct age in Leeds with a Tabitha Wood. Is she a relative or is Mary her servant? Can't see any occupations on Familysearch.
Mary Brumfitt 25 spinster no father given married William Roskill 23 at St John's Preston on 29 March 1850.
1851 Census Mary and Wm Roskill and child  are lodging in Preston with Ralph  Mayer and family. There is also a John Whiteside 12 scholar.
In 1881 the Roskills have an Elizabeth Whiteside15 niece living with them as Domestic servant. I can't yet figure out the Whiteside connection.
Brumfitt seems such an unusual name. Are they difficult to find because they're mistranscribed?
Any suggesting welcome.

Ireland / Fleming from Glennamaddy
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody tell me how to get further with the following information please. (my husband's mother)
Margaret Fleming born 12 Sept 1916.at Andorslough Glennamaddy ,Galway
Parents Thomas Fleming Land holder and Ellen Raftery. Birth cert issued in 1936 before she came to England.
I have checked the 1911 census and couldn't find Thomas and Ellen.
I then looked for a marriage registration (1885 to 1916) but can only find a Patrick Fleming / Honoria Raftery  marriage 1905 Castlereagh. I can't find this couple on 1911 census.
So as the parents are Catholic was it compulsory to register the marriage?
There were several brothers and sisters but I have no idea when and what order they were born . At least one of Margarets brothers ,Martin stayed in Glennamaddy.
Any suggestions  welcome. Sue

World War One / King's Royal Rifles Medal Card Query Farrington Walter 1914 Campaign.
« on: Thursday 10 December 15 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am going to put info about Walter on IWM website and want to know if there is any significance to the Qualifying date of 22 8 1914 at the bottom of his Medal Card. I've looked at the 1st Battalions War Diary . I think they arrived  in France on 12 Aug and the battle of  Mons didn' t start till 23.The battalion didn't have any casualties for several days.
He received the SWB a bullet in the right calf amongst other injuries and was discharged 29 Nov 1915. Time expired ? 13 years. He reenlisted in 1916 and his records exist from then on .
Is it possible to find out when he was injured ?
His early injuries come from his re- enlistment form. He suffered accidental bomb wounds in 1916 .GSW eye and left thigh. Am I correct in assuming this means general shrapnel wounds? I believe he wore a patch over his eye from then on although he remained in the army till 1919.
I have an old post in June 2006 with photo about him .
Sue
