Family History Beginners Board / Minot Harrington?
« on: Monday 19 February 18 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone have any information on the use of Minot as a Christian name? Is it associated with a particular religious belief or cultural background?
I know it occurs quite a lot in the USA, but I seem to have the name appear out of the blue in Essex in 1851. The details are:
1851, Lamarsh, Essex.
Ishmael Harrington, head
Minot (?) Harrington, Son
Hannah Harrington, sister.
Eliza Harrington, daughter.

So far I have been unable to find any explanation for the name, as the rest of Ishmael Harrington's children in the 1841 Lamarsh census are standard names: William, Anne, Sarah, Phillip, Robert and Edward. Minot seems to disappear after this entry.

The entry for 1851 is very feint, and I wondered at first if it was a mistranscrption, but it does look like Minot. Anyone have another solution or able to view the entry clearer?
Many thanks as always.

Family History Beginners Board / Maria Jane Harrington
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
Help needed with another Harrington:

Maria Jane Harrington, b. Oct 1879, Bures, Suffolk. Father George, mother Alice. After her family split up in 1896, she appears in 1901 as just Jane Harrington in Prittlewell, Essex, as servant to the March family. I can't find her after that in 1911. A marriage or death I've missed somewhere?
Any help very welcome.
Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / George Harrington remarriage
« on: Saturday 20 January 18 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with my continuing saga with this Harrington family?

George Harrington, b. Alphamstone, Essex, about 1859, marries Alice Cook in Sudbury, Dec 1878. Alice died in 1892, and the story I now have is that he remarried shortly after her death.
In 1901 Ongar, Epping, I have found a George Harrington that might fit, married to a Sarah Jane, born 1856 in Rattlesden? Suffolk, but can't seem to find a marriage record. It's important because it will give a clue to when George's children with Alice Cook moved away.
Any help gratefully received.

Family History Beginners Board / Charles Harrington
« on: Monday 08 January 18 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
Another enquiry to see if anyone has access to more information than I can see:
Charles Harrington, b. Oct-Dec 1892, Sudbury, Suffolk. No parents visible on registration.
Can't find a baptism anywhere.
In these circumstances of no parents being obvious, is a birth certificate likely to show more, or is that a chance one simply has to take?! Any advice very welcome.
Thanks as always.

Can anyone help with more information or clarification of Mary Ann Dawson and her parents/siblings?

Mary Ann Dawson marries David Joseph Dunton (1864-1921), 22 July 1882 at St. John's , Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.
She gives her age as 18 on the marriage certificate (b. 1864), but  she may have been younger. Death recorded November 1945, Cleethorpes, Lincs.
1891 census: living in Grimsby, Lincs, with husband David (listed as David S, but clearly a J on document) and children including Mary Ann, b. 1883, Grimsby. Mary Ann senior (1864) recorded as born 1866, Flitchum, Norfolk. Husband David b. Brancaster, Norfolk, and all his family have strong connections with Brancaster.
1911 census: living in Cleethorpes, Lincs, with David and children. Census completed and signed by David, again gives Mary Ann's b. as 1866, but birthplace as Gressnel, Norfolk. I am taking this as probably being Gressenhall? It's not a million miles from Flitchum, but far enough to raise questions. Were the 2 places linked by a common district?
I can find no record of the family in 1901 census, and in fact have had problems before with this census in Lincolnshire. Does anyone know if there is an official problem ie lost or damaged?
Searching baptism records, I initially found a Mary Ann Dawson baptised April 1 1866 in South Creake, Norfolk, to William Dawson and Winifred Money, but have since discovered she married John William Creamer in Nov 1864.
I have found a Mary Ann Dawson baptised April 17, 1864 in Letheringsett, Norfolk (not particularly near Flitchum or Gressenhall), parents Hushai (?) Dawson and Emily. There is also Sarah baptised the same day, so probably twins. Can anyone see more details?
As the 1911 census was completed by husband David, I am leaning towards this being the most accurate, but perhaps I'm wrong? There is also possible confusion in that David Dunton had a sister called Mary Ann b. Brancaster 1861. She and David appear on the 1881census, living at 150 Victor Street, Grimsby, Lincs., with parents William and Margaret Dunton. This Mary Ann is recorded on the same page as Mary Ann Hyldon, wife of Frederick Hyldon whom she married in 1880, and so is a double entry. I presume this is far from a unique mistake!
I have been unable to find any other Mary Ann Dawsons  that fit the birth date or place, but perhaps I've missed something. Can anyone give me any more details about Mary Ann's birth/parents/siblings?
Thanks as always.

« on: Thursday 28 December 17 20:12 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this?

Elizabeth Fleete married William J Wells, Dec 22 1872. Yarmouth, Norfolk. Father listed as William Fleete.
1881 census: Elizabeth Wells and William Wells, reg. Caistor. Elizabeth born abt. 1844, Yarmouth.

I am trying to find more about Elizabeth's parents and possible siblings. I can't find a record of her birth, nor any sign of her on the 1851/61 or 71 censuses. Any help greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Another Lavinia Banton
« on: Wednesday 13 December 17 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
A few days ago I asked  you for help finding the death details of my 2nd great aunt Levinia McCutcheon (nee Banton, born Manchester 1836). You managed to find details of her remarriage to William John Delf, his brutal treatment of her and her death in Grimsby, Lincs in 1920. Thanks again.

I now have her niece, also Lavinia Banton, whose death is proving equally elusive. Can anyone help?
Here are the details I have:

Lavinia Banton, b. about 1868, Gorton, Manchester.
1871 census: in Gorton, Lancashire, with parents Stephen and Maria Banton,    and sisters Elizabeth and Jane. Birth about 1868.
1881 census: still with parents Stephen and Maria in Gorton Lancashire, with sisters Jane and Lucy (sister Elizabeth had died in 1879). Listed as Lousia, birth about 1868.
May 16 1891, marries Meshach Kenyon in Bradford, Lancashire. Sister Jane is a witness. Signs herself Lavina.
March 2 1892, son Stephen Kenyon born in Chorlton, Lancashire.
July 1894, husband Meshach dies in Chorlton, Lancashire. I don't have access to the death certificate.
1901 census: son Stephen Kenyon living in Gorton, Lancashire, with grandparents Stephen and Maria, and aunt Lucy (Lavinia's sister). No sign of Lavinia.
I have tried searching with various spellings of the christian name, but can't seem to find her.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
