I'm looking for James Terry in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from 1794 onwards. I have not been able to trace him in the United States of America.

James Terry was apprenticed as a Bookbinder and Stationer in 1780.  He married Mary Bradford in December 1788.  Mary died in 1799 and was buried 16 April 1799 at St Leonard's Church, Beoley, Worcestershire, England.  James Terry paid for the indenture of his apprentice Josh Ward in 1793.  The Master's occupation was stated as Bookseller.  James Terry then married Elizabeth Standbridge, born 1769, at St Mary, Warwick, Warwickshire, England on 29 July 1794.

From a biography of James Terry written by his sister's daughter, which although undated, because of the detail in the content, was written after 1845, it is known that he arrived in England from America in 1803.

On June 10 1804 James wrote to his sister saying that they were embarking that day for Philadelphia.  The party that travelled included the parents of Elizabeth Terry, John Standbridge 1730-1812 and Elizabeth Tomlinson 1732-1804; the brother of Elizabeth Terry, John Christopher Standbridge 1771-1847 along with his wife Frances Lillington 1772-1846 and their two infant children.  Also in the party were two servants of John Standbridge senior.

James Terry arrived in Philadelphia on 12 August 1804.

Any suggestion of how I may trace him further would be appreciated.

Gloucestershire / William Cole - Stage Waggoner
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 16:42 BST (UK)  »
Daniel Cole was baptised at St Aldgate, Gloucester 12 February 1832 to parents William and Anne Cole. Image available on Ancestry. William's QTP was given as Stage Waggoner.

Can anyone tell me what Stage Waggoner means?  I do not require any further information other than the Quality, Trade or Profession of the father.

Thanks in anticipation.

Occupation Interests / John Worthington Roberts b1868
« on: Tuesday 10 May 16 18:13 BST (UK)  »
When John Worthington Roberts married Annie Painter at St Mary, Wolverhampton in 1889 his Rank or Profession was stated as Millband Maker.  His father Benjamin Roberts was also called a Millband Maker.

I must admit this has stumped me.  Can anyone describe to me what this occupation was?

Thanks in anticipation.

Thomas Andrews 1786-1861 was the son of Joseph Andrews 1759-1836 and Mary Terry 1761-1839.  Thomas, like his father was a shoemaker, and is described as such at the baptisms of his children.  In the 1841 census he was living at the Sunday School House, Alvechurch and described as a School Teacher.  In 1851 and 1861 he is described as the Parish Clerk.

Mary Cartwright was born about 1793.  Where, I do not know.

The mother of Mary Cartwright was also Mary.  In 1841 she was living alone in Rowney Green, Alvechurch, born out of county, with her age given as 80, although she was born about 1857.  She died on 12 May 1843, and was buried at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch on 16 May 1843 (Source: Parish Register: Abode-Alvechurch, Age-86).  The sole executor of her will was Thomas Andrews (Source: Will of Mary Cartwright proved 12 Aug 1843).

I have searched for a marriage of Thomas Andrews to Mary Cartwright without success.  The Worcestershire Marriage Index, held at The Hive, Worcester does not have a marriage for this couple.  Family Search does not have a record for them.  It is possible that as Mary's mother was born out of county Mary may have been married at the home parish of her mother.

I would be grateful if anyone has any idea how I may move forward to find a marriage for Thomas and Mary.

Thanks,

Family History Beginners Board / Phonetically speaking - Completed

The Parish Register of St Lawrence, Alvechurch, Worcester has an entry for the marriage between Thomas Andrus [sic] and Sary [sic] Asson [sic] on 17 May 1762.  Both marked.  Witnesses were Adam Morris and Ann Asson [sic], who also marked.

Thomas Handrus was later recorded as Thomas Andrews and Sary was later recorded as Sarah.

It seems the cleric who wrote the record did so as he heard it.  I have tried looking for Sarah under a number of variations of Asson, with no success.

Does anyone have any idea for the surname of Sarah?

Thanks in anticipation.

Worcestershire / Edward (The Younger) Andrews 1784-1845
« on: Sunday 13 December 15 22:26 GMT (UK)  »
Edward (The Younger) Andrews 1785-1845 was a small famer who lived in Alvechurch, Worcester.

He was buried on 8 June 1845 at St Lawrence, Alvechurch, Abode-Alvechurch, Age-60.  My source is the Parish Register.

He died Wednesday 4 June 1845 from the effects of being kicked in the chest by a stallion he was mistreating.  An Inquest was held at The Square & Compasses, Hanbury, Worcester.  The Inquest was held by Mr Hughes and the verdict reached was "Accidental Death".  Incorrectly reported in Worcester Journal dated 12 June 1845 as Thos. Andrews.  My sources for this information are various newspaper reports.

My query is that I can find no death certificate for Edward (The Younger) Andrews.  The FreeBMD entry for Jun 1845 in Worcester for Thomas Andrews is not connected.

Could anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks in anticipation.

John Andrews was the first child of Joseph Andrews and Mary Terry.  Joseph Andrews and Mary Terry married 24 May 1783 St Lawrence, Alvechurch, Worcester.

Joseph Andrews and Mary Terry had three other children: Elizabeth 1784-1864, Thomas 1786 and Joseph 1789-1861.

John Andrews has proved difficult for me to trace.  The will of John's father Joseph was written on 18 February 1834.  In the will Joseph mentions John and his three siblings.  I am able to trace the siblings of John Andrews, but, not John himself.

With John being the first named in the will of his father Joseph I would expect him to have been the first born male between 1783 and 1786.  However, I can not find any trace.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.
