Australia / Patrick McDonnell, convict, probably Tasmania
« on: Tuesday 21 June 22 02:31 BST (UK)  »
Mentioned in the convict record of his sister Margaret McDonnell, who was tried at Drodhega, Ireland and was transported on the "Arabian" in 1847 to Van Diemen's land. I am presuming that he was there also, since VDL records know about him in 1847.

I am having trouble finding anything on Patrick McDonnell in Tasmania.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ireland / Captain Robert Gudgeon Johnston, British Army and N.S.W. Magistrate
« on: Friday 06 December 19 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping for some help in piecing together the details of the life of Captain Robert Gudgeon Johnston. An ancestor of mine married into the Johnston family and my cousins have found the trail has gone cold. We've had no joy trying to find the details of his parents.

Captain Robert Gudgeon Johnston, born 1794. His marriage certificate lists his birth in Wexford, Ireland, around the time of the New Ross rebellion. The town listed is New Towns, Wexford, Ireland. We have no firm idea of who his parents were. There is a record of a Martha Gudgeon,  baptized 1771 in Suffolk, father Robert and mother Elizabeth. These names repeat across the generations, suggesting maybe Martha was Captain Johnston’s mother, however no link has yet been found.

Married Anna Maria Hartley in 1822 in the British Embassy, Paris.

3 children:

John Cockburn Johnston 1823-1856

Eliza Martha Johnston 1834-1924

Rawson Parke Johnston 1837-1899

All three children died in NSW/Victoria

Was living in Plymouth in 1838. (Baptism records of children confirm this).

Was in the British Army.

Arrived in the colonies in 1852.

Was in 1854 appointed magistrate for Port Macquarie NSW.

He died on the way back to England and was buried at sea near the Falkland Islands in 1859.  His will was lodged in NSW,  witness and executor was Edward Denny Day, the famous Police magistrate who locked up lots of bush rangers.

There are a number of unanswered questions about Captain Johnston’s story.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

This inquiry is also listed in the Australia area.

The search back gets blocked at Capt. Johnston's parents with no names.

Any assistance/additional information/suggestions will be much appreciated.

Btw, I wasn't sure whether to list this inquiry in Australia or the U.K. or Ireland. Is it possible for it to appear in more than one region?

Attached is a letter in search of Robert Ellis Morgan, which appeared in:
Queensland Figaro and Punch (Brisbane, Qld. : 1885 - 1889) Sat 25 May 1889 Page 2 Lost Friends.

1. Robert Ellis Morgan and his sister Henrietta Fullerton Morgan (later Mrs Charles East) were the children of Anne and Sackville Hamilton Morgan.
2. Robert E. Morgan married Sarah Palmer in Dublin in 1849. He arrived in Melbourne a few years later, presumably with his wife.
3. The "Echaco railway" mentioned in the Queensland newspaper I take to refer to Echuca in Victoria, but I don't know that.
4. His niece was born Anna Maria East, later Mrs Charles Cassidy.

I am hoping that others may have some further clues about his life in the colonies. A family perhaps?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Devon / Plymouth schools in 1871 where Mary Ann Oliver might have been enrolled
« on: Thursday 18 April 19 20:40 BST (UK)  »
The 1871 Census record for my great grandmother Mary Ann Oliver (born in Plymouth in 1860) has her living with her parents Francis and Thomasina Oliver at 35 Millbay Road Plymouth  as a 9 y.o. "scholar". I am seeking information about what local schools would have been nearby and where records for those schools might be found/accessible.
The family left Plymouth for Victoria (Australia) in 1876 on the "Lincolnshire". They settled in Bendigo.
Her father Francis Oliver was born in Polperro c. 1825, as was his father William Oliver in or around 1798. Some records point to my Oliver ancestors from Polperro being related to the renowned (infamous?) smuggling family, but we have not been able to confirm this, so any assistance on this would be also welcomed.

Australia / Holy Trinity Church of England school, Port Melbourne
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 10:42 GMT (UK)  »
The attached article mentions the schoolroom of 1909. I'm trying to find a little of its history. Not much luck so far. No mention of it when I was at the church site recently.
I suspect my great-grandmother Annie Ruth Morgan may well have attended the school. She was born in Rouse Street in 1881 and baptised at Holy Trinity.
I will be very grateful for any information/assistance.

Australia / Albert Joseph Derrick, son of Harriet Williams
« on: Friday 25 January 19 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
Born 1871, Amherst, Victoria. The subject of the attached 1904 South Australia Police gazette report, under the heading of "Apprehensions of The Week". Mentioned in the 1920 death notice of his mother as deceased. Brother of my great-grandmother.
I am trying to find when and where Albert J. Derrick may have died, and where he might be buried. The 1904 report is our last clue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Australia / John Quinlan, born in Tasmania, died in Victoria.
« on: Monday 23 July 18 02:46 BST (UK)  »
Name:John Quinlan
Death Date:20 Jul 1942 (i.e. burial date)
Cemetery:Fawkner Memorial Park
Burial or Cremation Place:Fawkner, Moreland City, Victoria, Australia (Roman CatholicFA-R/C*GA***440)
***
Hello,
I am trying to get more details of the life of John James Quinlan, born 1868 in Launceston. son of William Quinlan and Margaret (nee McDonald).
The Fawkner burial record of 1942 is for a public grave, with 7 others (not related to him). It is for an 83 y.o. John Quinlan, suggesting he died alone and without funds.
He was alive in 1935 when his brother William died in Preston.
Beyond that, I don't know anything about him.
I would welcome any suggestions of record/websites to investigate, which may prove helpful in trying to research a bachelor who looks to have died alone.
Much appreciated.

Australia / 1869 burial of Jeremiah Quinlan, in Tasmania
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 19:10 BST (UK)  »
The death record attached tells that the informant of Jeremiah Quinlan's death in 1869 Tasmania was the undertaker Thomas J. Doolan. The Quinlan family look to have lived in Campbell Town, Jeremiah being the son of William Quinlan and Margaret McDonald.
I am trying to locate the grave of Jeremiah Quinlan in the hope that it will be a family plot with records detailing other family members buried there.
Any help will be much appreciated.
