United States of America / A Challenge for Rootschatters
« on: Thursday 31 July 08 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I saw this this morning:

http://news.aol.com/article/lost-letter-makes-it-way-back-home-60/107675?cid=46

I spent a bit of time looking for the family but had to get my day started. I did find Gertrude Gilmore with her Julia in the 1910 census at the address of the house (700 Ohio Street, Lawrence, Kansas). She was also in the 1920 and I didn't get to the 1930. I also found her in a different town in Kansas in 1900 with her parents and I think it was a brother. There was also another Gilmore family in Lawrence in the 1900, but not living at that address. I have no idea if they are connected.

As you can see, I was very rushed this morning, and don't have a ton of time now, but thought this is definitely up Rootschats alley so wanted to put it out there. It would be fun to find the rightful home to the misplaced letter.

England / Immigration Records and "Real" Names
« on: Friday 25 July 08 19:25 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure where to start with this. I am trying to determine the original name of one of my branches. They were Russian Jews and spent a few years in England around the mid 1890s before coming to America. By the time they hit England, they were Stahl. My husband recalls someone saying it was very very different than Stahl, and his brother thinks he heard Stahl is a shortened version of what it could have been.

I was wondering if there are immigration records that might state what their real name was and what they changed to. I really have no idea where to start with this, and no living relative seems to remember what it could possibly have been.

United States of America / Getting Army Records
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 17:06 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering how to go about getting military records for someone who was discharged from teh US Army in 1897. I have his discharge papers, but want to get the rest of his records, and can't seem to find online how to obtain them. Thanks a lot.

United States of America / Finding Address in 1900 Census
« on: Monday 12 May 08 13:15 BST (UK)  »
I know people have asked this before, but is it possible to find an address in the census, as opposed to searching by name. I am looking for 64 Moore Street, Brooklyn, NY. I believe I have the ward narrowed down to the 16th and have spent hours searching on Ancestry. I have found most of Moore Street but can't find the one particular block I am looking for.

Thanks for any tips.

Hi all. I just received a death certificate for Paulina Stahl, died June 7, 1892, age 2 years 2 months in New York, daughter of Gustav and Josephine Stahl, both born in Germany. Not my family. Happy to pass it along if anyone wants.

The Common Room / Death at Sea
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how a death is recorded if someone died at sea? According to the 1900 census, my husband's great-grandmother had 5 children, 3 living. They lived in England for a few years before coming to the US in 1893. Their oldest daughter was born in England in 1890. There is then a record of a boy born in the same area in 1891 and a girl in 1892. I can't find these children on the 1901 census, can't find them on passenger lists, and I can't find them in the BMDs. I can't find them on the Italian genealogy site either, and the family was living in NYC. What would happen if the babies died at sea?

United States of America / Castle Garden vs Ancestry
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 12:59 BST (UK)  »
I found what I believe are my ggg grandparents with their oldest daughter on passenger records on Castle Gardens. According to this site, they came on the Adriatic, arriving in NY on 16 August 1852. There names were Bernard Martin, 35, joiner, Margaret Martin, 28, servant, and Mary Martin, 1. According to Castle Garden, there were 4 other Martins on the ship: Bridget, 40, servant; John, 10; Norry, 45, servant (F); and Robert, 9, shopkeeper(?). I can't see the actual passenger list here to see if they were all traveling together. The timing is right. My gg grandmother was born in Dec 1852 in NY, and the story is her mother was pregnant with her when she came over. My Bernard was a joiner on the 1851 census in Lancs and a carpenter in census in the us.

i went to Ancestry to see if i could see an actual image. Ancestry does not list these same people on the Adriatic on that same day. The only Martins I can find are John, 10; Mary, 32; and Pat, 12.  :o :o The image is horrible, almost unreadable.

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Ireland / Validity of Site?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 23:49 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone searching for Irish surnames had used this site:

http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/

A gg grandfather's death cert says he was from a particular parish in Sligo, but the name doesn't seem to be common in Sligo. Add in his mother's supposed maiden name, and it is even farther afield. My gg grandfather married in the US to an Irish girl who was from that parish and I think it just got put down to being his also but am not sure how to go about proving it. Does this particular site really help do you think?

United States of America / Forgotten Cemetery Lookup
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, and I am sorry about this. Someone has reminded me that I offered to do a cemetery lookup when the weather gets better, but I don't remember for whom it was. If the requestor is out there, could you refresh my memory? It would be for Madison County, New York, I think, or maybe somewhere in central NY that is close to where I live. I feel bad but am drawing a blank. Happy to do any of these lookups for you, though. It's been a long long winter.  :P
