United States of America / House Information in 1920s Detroit, Michigan
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 04:59 GMT (UK)  »
My g-grandparents (Henry and Jennie Jeffrey) lived in Detroit, Michigan in the 1920s. They are listed in the 1920 US census in Detroit. They lived at 1503 Montclair Ave in Detroit in June, 1925. By 1930, they had moved to Seattle, Washington, where they are listed there in the 1930 US census. I am attempting to determine when they moved to Seattle. Are there records online that might tell me when their house was sold sometime between 1925 and 1930? Thanks!

United States of America / Looking for Santa Monica street photo from 1933
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 17:29 BST (UK)  »
My g-grandfather, Henry Jeffrey, lived at 943 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, CA. Attached is a photo of him on his steps in 1933. The residence has been torn down, and is currently replaced by apartments. Is it possible to see a photo of what it looked like in 1933? How might I access an old photo of the place?

United States of America / Los Angeles 1927 Post Office Location
« on: Friday 19 May 23 18:03 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather was a mailman in Los Angeles in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. I have a photograph of him with his fellow mailmen in front of the Los Angeles Post Office G. I'm wondering where this Post Office was located? He regularly delivered mail in the Vermont Avenue area. Thanks!

United States of America / 2018 Oregon Traffic death
« on: Friday 10 March 23 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
My cousin, Constance (Jeffrey) Campbell (1954-2018), passed away in a suspicious traffic accident on 2 November 2018 on Interstate 84 outside of Ontario, Malheur county, Oregon. I live in California, but my son lives in Portland, Oregon. I asked him to see if he could obtain a copy of Constance's death certificate. So today he went to the Portland State Office Building, in person, to apply. They said the certificate was not obtainable until 50 years after her death.
2 questions:
1. Is this information accurate? Do I have to wait 45 more years to get a copy of her death certificate? Or is there another way to get a copy?
2. What other sources of information can I research to discover the circumstances of her death? She had two of her grandchildren in the car at the time of the accident, and one of them was injured badly enough to be admitted to a local hospital (unsure of the name of the facility).

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering extract from Family Bible - 1850
« on: Saturday 12 November 22 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
The attachment was recently discovered. It was extracted from the McLean Family Bible ~ 1850 by a Canadian ancestor. It is listing the family of my g-g-g-g-g-g-grandparents in Paisley, Scotland, Alexander Lang (d. 1769) and Janet Fleming (d. 1781). Most of the people were unknown to me until I found this document, so I'd like to get as accurate a deciphering as possible, if anyone would like to take a 'stab.'
My ancestor on the document is Ann Lang, who married Alexander McLean (7th line). Much thanks to anyone who would decipher this handwriting!

FH Documents and Artefacts / Is this a post-mortem photograph?
« on: Tuesday 06 September 22 21:48 BST (UK)  »
This is an ambrotype from 1855-1860 (Canadian). The woman in the photo is my g-g-grandmother, Agnes (Moscrip) Jeffrey (1819-1873). I've been told that this might be a postmortem photo. Would love to hear impressions from some of you in the group about this possibility, and what leads you to your opinion.
Here's as much as I know about the woman. Agnes Moscrip was married in ~ 1839 to a John McLenhan. They had 4 children, born in 1841, 1843, 1845, and 1848. In September 1847, her husband and two sons, aged 4 and 6, all died of dysentery. Her two other children survived. She then remarried my g-g-grandfather, Andrew Jeffrey in 1853, and had 4 children with him, in 1854, 1856, 1860 & 1862. I was told by a ambrotype 'expert' that the photo is mid-1850s at the latest. I've not found anything that mentioned a death of an infant. So that's my dilemma. Thanks for any thoughts you might have!

Would someone be kind to decipher all the words/symbols of this birth record of my ancestor, John Lyell, in 1691? It was recorded in the parish records of Cockburnspath.

Berwickshire / Toll Riots 1792 Newwater?
« on: Friday 26 August 22 18:10 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-g-grandfather, a William Jeffrey, is alleged to have participated in the toll riots that occurred in Berwickshire in 1792. My research has uncovered that these riots occurred around Duns, and also at the toll bars at Paxton and Newwater.
I have been unable to find out where Newwater is located in this area. Does anyone know where it was located? Thanks so much!
