Angus (Forfarshire) / Child Under Arm
« on: Wednesday 28 September 16 14:34 BST (UK)  »
I was searching for birth information for my 7x Great Grandfather when I noticed on one of the possible entries the prase "child under arm"  ??? - is this another way of saying illegitimate?  The person I'm searching for is an Alexander Cowlie who was born around 1660 in Dun, Angus.

The said Mr Cowlie has sent me on a merry chase trying to find his birth.  I think he was born in Dun or the surrounding area as he married Catren Muckart in 1676 at Dun and their 7 children that I've managed to track down so far were all born there, so this is indicative to me of a settled man, who didn't move very far from home.

However, his date of birth could be up to 20 years before that of my estimate.  I really really hate researching that far back - and especially in Scotland, but here's hoping that someone on this wonderful site can help me track down my 7x great grandad  ;)

Regards and best wishes to everyone

I have come across a couple of entries in the U.S. City Directories on Ancestry where the street name has been abbreviated.

I'm looking for help in working out which streets they refer to.  The one that's got me completely stumped is Stfd Ave in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Anyone know where I can find out which street that refers to and whether there is a resource which shows the full forms for the abbreviations.  Some of them are quite straight forward but some of them, like this one, are completely unfathomable.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Rootschat Toolbar
« on: Friday 17 June 16 00:50 BST (UK)  »
I've just installed the Rootschat Toolbar, but it's just showing as a blank line on my screen.  I'm using Firefox version 47.0.  When I check the Toolbar in my Extensions, it shows it was updated on 17/6/2016 (today, which is I assume because I downloaded it today).  It also says that it couldn't be verified for use with Firefox.

Kincardineshire / Kincardineshire Resources - broken links
« on: Sunday 17 April 16 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible for someone to help?

I am looking for Kincardineshire records covering the period before 1841.  Some of the links in the Resources list are broken and I'm looking for alternative places to look.  Areas I'm researching are Benholm, Johnshaven, St Cyrus and Kinneff.

Thanks.

Kincardineshire / Benholm - David Watt born c 1780 m. Ann Mitchell 1808.
« on: Monday 11 April 16 12:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down my 4x Great Grandfather, David Watt.  I have him being born c 1780 at Benholm,  I have seen two birth entries for David Watt being born to George Watt and Margaret - one in 1781 and the other in 1783.  David married Ann Mitchell in 1808 and had several children, the last being born in 1823.  Ann then appears to have married a John Muldrock born in Ireland c 1802 in 1826 at Benholm and then in 1827 had a son.  I'm trying to establish whether John Muldrock married my Great-Grandmother or possibly a cousin.  One way I hope to establish this is to see if I can find a death for David Watt c1823-1826.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

I hope someone can help me pin down the location of the property my ancestor, John L Gordon was born at in 1871.  He is my great-grandfather and was born illegitimately at this place in Laurencekirk.  His mother, Elizabeth Gordon was also illegimate, being the daughter of Helen Gordon and William Pirie (some list her as Elizabeth Pirie, but I have never found a marriage entry for Helen and William).  By 1871, Helen had married John Mitchell and had a son (David) and daughter (Helen).  They were still residing at Bridge of Leppie.

The place itself is listed as "Bridge of Loppie" per Ancestry's transcripton.  I have looked on Google Earth until I am cross-eyed and been unable to locate it.  There are so many farms dotted around the area that don't seem to be named on the map that I could be overlooking it.

Anyone ever heard of it before?  I don't even see a Leppie Burn or Loppie Burn on the map.  Even if someone doesn't have an image of the place, directions to it on a map would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your help.

Aberdeenshire / Ross Family of Midmar
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a little help with the family of James Ross and Ann Young.

This is what I have so far (may be wrong) but has been gleaned from the Census records.  Approximate birth dates are in brackets.

James (1845) and Ann (1853) married in Strachan, Kincardineshire in June 1872 and had a son, Frederick born at Aboyne in October 1872 (yes, I know a 3 month pregnancy!).  They then moved to Midmar.

Their children Allan (1875), James (1877), Edward (1879), William (1880), Jane (1883), Rosina (1885), Emily (1888), Alice (1890), Donald (1894) and Norman (1897) were all born in Midmar.

From what I can understand James farmed Bankhead.

Ann was the daughter of David Young (1821) and Jane Middleton (1822).  Jane is my 3rd Great Aunt.

I haven't been able to find their (the children's) birth details under Midmar on Ancestry, but I haven't looked on Scotlands People yet due to financial constraints.  I was wondering if anyone who knows the lie of the land up there which other locations I could look under for birth entries.

Any help with this part of the world would be most appreciated.
