Essex / Steel LAMBERT of Great Dunmow - help/advice please
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I would really appreciate a fresh mind to help me find where Steel LAMBERT was born and who his parents are.

As you can see, I know a lot about him, but can't find his baptism anywhere.

Help! Please  :D
thanks in advance for any advice
Rosemary

I have the following info on him:

Born about 1776 (based on age at death of "in 83rd year") - I've checked the Great Dunmow CofE baptisms on Seax from 1770-1786 with no joy - no Lamberts at all.

Steel married Elizabeth WILSHER 25 Oct 1796 at Great Easton, Essex by licence; Steel described as otp, Elizabeth as otp formerly of Great Tey. [Note: haven't checked Great Easton records for his baptism as don't currently have access to Seax.]

Children all born Great Dunmow, some baptised at Coggeshall Independent Chapel: William (b1800); Jane (b1802); Elizabeth (b1805); George (b1807); Ann (b1809); Joseph (b1811).

1841 Census - residence Great Dunmow.

20 Sept 1848 married Jemima Elizabeth FOX at Independent Chapel, Great Dunmow - just received marriage certificate from GRO = widower and widow but no fathers' names/occupations (boo!). Steel described as a Corn Factor

1851 Census: Can't find them; apparently returns for Great Dunmow are missing.

1858 24 March - death of Steel reported in 2nd April ed. of Chelmsford Chronicle "24th ult., at Great Dunmow, suddenly, in his 83rd year, Mr Steel Lambert, many years miller of that place."

Scotland / problems in accessing Scotlands People website
« on: Friday 17 April 09 17:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I just want to check whether this is just my problem or if other people are having a problem too!

When I try to access the Scotlands People website right now, I am getting the following error:
Timeout waiting for Web Server to respond to request.

I have tried various routes in & all give me this response! Is this just me, or are other people seeing a similar problem at the moment?

thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / cost of birth certificate with extra checks
« on: Wednesday 12 September 07 18:10 BST (UK)  »
I looked and looked on the government website, but I couldn't find anywhere that tells me how much they will charge for the following scenario:-

I would appreciate the inside track from anyone who knows!

1) order on line a birth certificate for which the GRO index is known;
2) request a check for the father's name;
3) on checking, father's name does not match, so the certificate is not issued.

Thanks,
Rosemary

Hi

please would some one look up the entry for Ralph Nevill, born 1890, living in Manitoba.

I am especially interested in any details on where he was born, parents etc, as if he is the person I am hoping (!) he emigrated to Canada from London, England.

Of course, I would also love any details on wife & kids too ;)

thanks v. much for your help

World War One / WW1 - Ralph NEVILL killed in action
« on: Thursday 10 August 06 22:07 BST (UK)  »
.... at least that's what the note on the back of the photo says... I have looked on the CWGC site & at the Medal Card Index on the National Archive & am not sure how I can work out which record is *my* Ralph Nevill...

... but I have a photo of him in uniform... so  if someone would very kindly identify his regiment/rank from the attached photo ;) I reckon this will help me along the way.

thanks very much :D
Rosemary

P.S.
I know the following about Ralph:
Ralph Nevill (no evidence for middle names from GRO birth index & census data)
born: 1890 in London
parents: Sydney & Margaret Nevill
sibs: Guy b1894 & Marjory b1898
