Cavan / Mitchells in Bailiebororough, Cavan
« on: Sunday 18 July 21 13:41 BST (UK)  »
My very mysterious great-great-grandfather was John Mitchell born about 1844 in Northern Ireland, according to the family stories.   He most likely arrived in Victoria, Australia about 1860 but so far I have been unable to determine just John Mitchell he is.   His marriage and the births of his 10 -12 children were never officially registered, but baptism records were found for 9 of the children.   And, of course, the registration of his death has not been found.   However he is annotated as deceased on his wife’s death certificate and on a few of his children’s marriage certificates.

Recently I have found three DNA matches each with a Mitchell marriage dating back to the 1850s – 80s in Bailieboro Cavan.   All have a John Mitchell as the father, but the forename of these three Mitchells is the same as three of my John Mitchell’s children born in Victoria.   From the Irish Genealogy site, civil records, they are:

Rebecca Mitchell married John McKelvey 3 Mar 1854, Bailieboro;

William Mitchell married Ann Fox, 7 Aug 1862, Bailieboro; and

Francis Mitchell married Isabella McCleery, 7 Dec 1881, Bailieboro.

There are a few more Bailieboro marriages with a father listed as John Mitchell but I am yet to find a DNA match to them and the forenames don’t match any of the remaining children born in Victoria.
I recently took a subscription to RootsIreland in the hope that the available church records for Bailieboro Cavan may unearth some more details but I couldn’t find any baptism entries in Bailiboro, or in Cavan or the surrounding counties that match.   Are there any other records that might point me in the right direction?   Maybe someone reading this has a connection to the Mitchells!

Pembrokeshire / Ribbeson in Pembrokeshire
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 05:29 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings,
My G-G-Grandfather Stephen Warlow was recorded in the 1851 Census as living in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire.   I have attached a snip of the record.   His place of birth is written as Pembroke, Ribbeson as best as I can read it.   I have been unable to locate any place named Ribbeson and the best that I can come up with is that it might be Robeston.
Has anyone heard of Ribbeson in Pembrokeshire and do you think that I might be on the right track with Robeston?
Thanks in advance,
Mark,

Sutherland / William MacKay (abt 1819), Loth, Sutherland
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 11:00 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly, apologies for a somewhat long-winded query.   My wife’s G-G-grandfather was Joseph McKie.   He died, aged 78, in 1922 at Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.   His death certificate states that he was born in Dundee, Scotland (about 1845 based on his age at death), his mother was Catherine Findlay, father not listed.   We also have a copy of his marriage certificate when he married Mary Ann Gannon in Hay NSW in 1881.   Unfortunately all the important details were left blank!

We think that his Joseph McKie's father may have been William Mackay based on the following information. From the “UK, Foreign and Overseas Registers of British Subjects, 1628-1969” we found that on 23 April 1845 William Mackay, 26, from the Parish of Loth, County of Sutherland N.B. married Catherine Finlay, 18, from the County of Perth N.B., daughter of William Finlay and Mary Finlay alias Angus.   This marriage took place on HMS Collingwood in Valparaiso, Chile.

Then in the 1851 Scottish census for Dundee, Angus, there is a Cathren Findlay 25 daughter born in Kegortern Perthshire, William Findlay 49, Maregt Findlay 45, a few younger Findlays and finally a Joseph Morays aged 5 relationship “Jainde” born in America.   We think that Joseph Morays (was “Morays” a bad transcription from the written Census?) may very well be the son of William Mackay and Catherine Findlay, but are stumped on the relationship “Jainde”.   Does anyone have any idea or is it another poor transcription?

So far we have had little success in establishing why they were in Chile, what happened to William Mackay and why Catherine (if it is the same Catherine) was back in Scotland living with her family.

Just for completion we think that Catherine Findlay married George Bremner (named as Brymer) in Dundee in November 1851 and they sailed to Victoria Australia in 1852 on the Watana under the name Brenner, including Joseph Brenner aged 5.   Catherine’s family also appear to have been on the same ship under the name “Findley”.

Can anyone enlighten us about William Mackay and the word “Jainde”?

Look forward to any responses,
Mark

Shetland / Robert Crawford - Place of Birth Shetland N.B.
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 11:08 BST (UK)  »
In our family history we have a Robert Crawford on whose death certificate in Bourke, New South Wales, Australia states he was born in Shetland Islands (about 1819 according to age at death). On some of his children's birth certificates his place of birth also reflects Shetland and Scotland, but one in particular states his birth place as "Shetland N. B."

Trying to find out if "Shetland N.B." has any significance.

Kind regards,

Derry (Londonderry) / Patrick Madden Born Abt 1800 County Derry
« on: Friday 13 July 18 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi to All,
I am hoping to find some more information about my wife's 4x grandfather Patrick Madden. So far we have his death certificate in Victoria Australia in 1870 and some marriage and death certificates from some of his children. They all point to the family coming from Country Derry.

Patrick died in Kilmore, Victoria in 1870. His death certificate states he was 70 years old, he had been living in Victoria for 19 years, he married when he was 36 to May Louglin in County Derry and there were four children Hannah aged 32, John 28, Susan 24 and Mary 19. Patricks parents were recorded as unknown.

Hannah appears to have been born in Portglenone Antrim. John and Susan in County Derry.

We have not been able to find exactly when and on what ship he arrived in they arrived in Australia, nor what became of his wife Mary or youngest daughter Mary (who may have been born over here or on the ship).   Also his wife Mary's surname has had various spellings on certificates we have sighted - Loughlin, O'Loghlin, Loheran (could be the writing) and Loughnen.

The usual we-sites have revealed nothing from their begginings in Ireland, so hoping that there is another Madden researcher who has lost a Patrick!

We look forward to any responses.

London and Middlesex / Clara Frances LANGFORD born abt 1828 Middlesex or London
« on: Monday 18 September 17 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Greetings to all,
I am trying to find out where my 3xGt-grandmother, Clara Frances Langford, was born and just exactly who her parents were.   The earliest actual record that I have found is her marriage to George Quarry on 4 Mar 1848 at St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex (England Marriages 1538 - 1973, and London Marriage Banns). This lists her father as Henry Langford.
Between 1849 and 1867, through the various parish and census records on familysearch.org and ancestry.com I have found the births of seven children.  In the 1851 and 1861 census Clara is listed as born in St. James, Middlesex.   In 1870 -71 with all living children they emigrated to Melbourne, Australia - all neatly captured in available shipping records.   Clara Frances died in Melbourne in 1915.   From all records that I have sighted she was born about 1828.   On the index for her death her parents are listed as Joseph Langford and Mary Carlyle.   This is where it gets quite messy and confusing!
I recently found that Clara was executrix of her mother's will in 1875. Her mother died in Melbourne as Mary Seales on 20 Jan 1875. Mary's death certificate was very hard to read, but she married Joseph Seall in Tasmania (no record of the event found as yet) around 1853. Prior to that she married a Thomas Carlisle in London (17 Dec 1835, St James, Westminster, Middlesex).   For both these marriages there was "no issue". Mary's father was listed as Robert Langphere and mother unknown and she was born in Cork, Ireland, around 1810 (this is a best guess, with the place name unreadable).
Back to Clara Francis - I can see that her father as listed on her death was an amalgam of her step-father Joseph and what appears to be her birth surname of Langford, and her mother's name as listed being her surname from her first marriage.
I have had no luck trying to find a birth or baptism for Clara Frances, nor any Langford family with a Clara and Henry.   I suspect that Mary was unmarried when Clara was born and the Henry mentioned in the marriage certificate may have been an uncle or grandfather.
I have also had no luck in finding when Mary came out to Australia but Joseph Seall was sent out for life in 1834 - that is another story ;D
Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction or to other records not available on the major websites.
Looking forward to any responses,
Mark

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Death Certificate Mary Seales 1875 Victoria
« on: Tuesday 29 August 17 03:37 BST (UK)  »
I am in great need of assistance in reading this certificate, it is one of the hardest I have come across with such small writing.   Under the appropriate columns I have annotated the information from the on-line Victorian BDM indexes (wary that it is an interpretation of the original index, which is an interpretation of the original certificate).
The certificate is for Mary Seales who died in Richmond Victoria on 20 Jan 1875. Parents appear to be Robert Langphere and Not Known - presume that it could be Langford from other information gathered.
I can sort of see Cork and Ireland (second and third line under Where born) but may be influenced by the index and certainly can't make out the first line.   The remaining I think is 20 years in Victoria and I year in Tasmania (again this fits with other information).
The marriage column is the main problem.   There appears to the two marriages.   I can't make out the first line, then it says 1st Marriage. Somewhere?, 2/26 (being age), then 3/ someone Carlisle.
Again for the 2nd marriage the somewhere is difficult, age appears to be Not Known or given?, then to Joseph Seales. (other info gathered confirms the Joseph).
The issue column for both marriages I think states No issue.

Mary Seales was the mother of Clara Frances Quarry (my g-g-g-grandmother ), according to the probate records.

I hope someone can assist.
Kind regards,
Mark,

Antrim / CONNOR Family of Ballymoney
« on: Monday 22 August 16 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Greetings to All,

A few weeks ago I was trying to find where my wife's g-g-grandfather, Joseph Connor, came from.   His death certificate, along with two of his brothers, indicated Scotland although initial searches using FamilySearch.org indicated that they may have actually come from Ballymoney, Antrim.   I had wonderful help from the kind people in the following Scottish thread      http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=753877.0
suggesting that the Connors did indeed come from Ireland.

Charles Connor and Ellen Wilson had seven children all born in Ballymoney between 1833 and 1847.   Using a combination of FamilySearch, Ancestry and Australian records I have managed to piece together what became of six of the seven children (six came out to Australia, some with partners and children).   Happy to provided details if any one is interested.

But so far I have failed to find out any details on Ellen Wilson and Charles Connor, including marriage, only his possible death in 1878 (Civil Marriage Index).   Also the only detail that I have on the youngest child, Sarah Jane Connor, is her baptism record for 1847.   I haven't found any reference of her coming out to Australia.
I think that I have exhausted FamilySearch and Ancestry (although every time I use these programs I seem to get a different set of information with what I thought were the same search parameters!)   So, I am wondering where best to search for this information and possibly find out more about Charles Connor and Ellen Wilson and their ancestors.

I look forward to any responses.   Kind regards,
Mark Smith

Scotland / Joseph Connor - Scotland (or Ireland!)
« on: Sunday 14 August 16 11:37 BST (UK)  »
Greetings to All,

My wife's g-g-grandfather was Joseph Connor who died in Hay, New South Wales, Australia in 1914 aged 70 years.   His death certificate lists his place of birth as Broxenburn, Scotland, and parents listed as Charles Connor and Ellen Wilson.

There are also two brothers:-
Thomas Wilson Connor, died Marong (very small place near Bendigo), Victoria, Australia, aged 72 years.   His marriage certificate states born in Scotland, parents Charles Connor and Ellen Wilson.; and
Robert Stavely Connor, died Bendigo, buried at Marong, in 1926, aged 81 years.   His death certificate states born in Scotland, father unknown, mother Helen Wilson.

So far I have been unable to find any reference to a Charles Connor and Ellen Wilson and any births associated with them in Scotland, but found an 1861 Scotland Census entry where possibly all three brothers were under one roof in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, but the surname is "Conner", and born in Ireland!  Their listed ages match.   I couldn't find any other "matching " census record and I am quite confident that they came to Australia in the early to mid 1860s.

A look at Irish (IGI) records finds a Charles Connor and Ellen Connor having seven children (in the period 1833-1847) in Ballymoney, County Antrim, including  Thomas (christened in 1837), Joseph (christened in 1841) and Robert Sterling (christened in 1844).   Again the ages correspond.

So the big question is were they born in Scotland or Ireland?   I feel that I should firstly concentrate in Scotland but am unsure of the best way ahead to prove or disprove that the brothers were born in Scotland.   Any pointers to appropriate records or other options would be gratefully welcome.

Regards,
Mark Smith
