Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 SPEED Salford Lancashire
« on: Saturday 03 June 06 11:02 BST (UK)  »
In 1861 George SPEED born 1802 lived at 6 Marshall Street Salford with his wife Ann and several children.

In 1841 he lived at 60 Blackburn Place, Salford with Ann and more children. On the 1841 I found children from a previous marriage for George which I hadn't known even existed.

I'm really curious to see the data from 1851 if anyone can locate it.

Thanks for looking

Armed Forces / Help to identify Boer War uniforms please
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Is there a website that shows the uniforms of Boer War regiments, specifically for other ranks?

I have photos of two brothers in their uniforms, which are different. I know that one of them served & died with the East Lancashire Militia. If I could find a picture of the uniforms it might help me put a name to one of the photos.

The photos can be seen at:

Armed Forces / Boer War Uniform Identification, please
« on: Monday 13 March 06 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have photos of two brothers in Boer War era uniform.  As there were three brothers missing from the 1901 census, and my grandmother always reckoned that nearly all her brothers went off to the military, it seems likely that this is the case.  They were all from Salford, Lancashire.

My research found that one of her brothers served in the East Lancashire Regiment and died of disease at Norvals Pont South Afrca in 1902.  He may be in one of the photos.

I realise the photos are not of the best quality, but if I had to describe the uniforms, I'd say in #1 the tunic is of an overall colour (red?) with a light colour collar, darker colour epaulets.  His cap appears to be of the same darker colour as the epaulets.  I cannot make out the insignia.

I will have to post each photo separately because of file size.  Photo #2 will be on the next post.

I have searched for photos of uniforms of that era to no avail.

Any guidance you can give will be much appreciated.
