The Common Room / New Ethic breakdown on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Just received an email saying they’d updated, so went and had a look.

For the first time, they've correctly identified both my father’s paternal heritage in Cheshire, and my mother’s in Northumbria / Scotland.

BUT - they’ve completely removed all trace of my father’s maternal links to London, the south east, Oxfordshire and East Anglia. There’s not that many DNA links to that part of my tree (well, there won’t be when an only child has an only child, who married an only child), but there’s just nothing showing, even with known matches.

Anyone else seeing part of their DNA disappear??

Technical Help / New Ancestry Stories interface
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
Ancestry have changed their Stories interface

Fine. They've changed so much recently, that's no surprise.

But when I try and use the new interface, I can paste the story in OK, but saving it is another matter. It's fine if I try on Edge or my iPad Safari, but not on Firefox (which I always use) - the Save and Cancel buttons at the bottom of the Edit panel are missing. Once I have the Story in place, I can edit it OK, the buttons are there. I think there's a small corner of the Cancel button on the top right corner, but no sign anywhere of Save.

I have tried clearing cache and cookies, and removing my extensions, as per their advice page. Nothing doing.

If I contact Ancestry, they are going to say it's my browser.

Is this happening to anyone else? If not, what do I try next?

The Common Room / Probate Search website

Is anyone else having trouble paying for Wills?

I tried yesterday and today. I've tried using both my bank cards. I've tried on Wifi and on mobile data. I've used the saved cards, and I've put the numbers in afresh. I've tried on my laptop and my iPad. I've cleared cache and cookies.

All I get is that my card number is incorrect or incompatible.

Oxfordshire / SMITH of Middleton Stoney
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 11:26 BST (UK)  »
Seeking descendants of Robert & Hannah Smith of Middleton Stoney who have taken a DNA test.

Robert and Hannah are purportedly my 3g grandparents. They had 14 children in Middleton Stoney between 1795 and 1818, among them Sarah in 1815, who on paper looks like my gg grandmother.

Sarah married Thomas Hitchcox in 1834, and they settled in the hamlet of Caulcott in Lower Heyford parish. There are no signs of any children until 1849, when they had a son called George. Further children (William Henry, 1852, and Jane, 1855) followed. All births registered in Bicester and baptised in Lower Heyford. And all died before age 3.

Then they had my ggrandmother Esther. Her birth was not registered, but she was baptised in Lower Heyford.

My problem is that after several years, I still have not one DNA match to the Smith family. Not even a small one.

Thomas Hitchcox was also born in Middleton Stoney, in 1812. I only have a three very small matches to his parents, far lower DNA than might be expected (7 - 9 cM for a gg grandparent)

I am seriously wondering whether Esther might have been adopted, possibly from a distant relative of Thomas's.

Proving Sarah and Esther were NOT related is more difficult than proving they might be. Hence the request (long shot) for people who have tested, who, if I'm right, will NOT match me at all!

Technical Help / Ancestry Sources
« on: Saturday 25 December 21 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have been adding sources to my One-Place Study tree, which I uploaded to Ancestry following the debacle at Rootsweb.

Today I went to add something to my tree, and went to find the appropriate source - only to find the list finished at S. As I was looking for Towcester Burial Register, this was not helpful.

So I cleared cache and cookies, tried again, then tried on my iPad. Always the same result. Reported it to Ancestry. Then I added another record to someone else on the tree, and the list of sources promptly lost another off the end.

My own, much smaller, tree, has no such problem. I am wondering if there may be a limit to the number of sources we are allowed?

Some of the Ancestry sources seem to add a new source to the list of sources every time you attach a record - the Civil Registration, stuff that came from the IGI. Try under "England and Wales, Civil Registration" on your own source list. Or any major county.

Has anyone else with a very large tree met this? Is there any way to delete some of these duplicated entries on the source list?

What one earth can I do?

The Common Room / Ancestry search function
« on: Friday 11 June 21 19:30 BST (UK)  »
Just a heads-up, there is a problem with the Ancestry search function at the moment.

You can search, but don't expect to get results if you put much information into the forms. Use the keyword section for places, and don't put any dates in.

They are working on it, but at the moment, less is definitely more!

The Common Room / Old photos
« on: Wednesday 12 May 21 16:01 BST (UK)  »
A friend is currently sorting through her father's photos, and has found a lot of old photos of London from the 1950s. I may have some from my mother's photos, again 1950's, of various places. Is there anywhere to donate them to where they could be seen and used by others? it seems a shame to keep them in a drawer!

For those with links to the south of the county, I just found Norman Tew's old site, Families of Stoke Bruerne, Ashton, Roade and Blisworth,  at a different address:

The Common Room / Find my Past subs
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
My sub to FindMyPast falls due in the middle of January. I've had one of the legacy Britain subscriptions.

Just a heads up - with only 10 days to go, I've just had an email to say that the Britain subscription is being withdrawn, and I am being moved onto a Pro subscription. They are, however, offering it to me with (this year!) a 25% discount, and after this year it will revert to the normal 15% loyalty discount. That, of course, is if I stay!

Presumably that will now apply to all of us on these legacy subscriptions!

That, of course, leaves me free to rethink whether I bother with FindMyPast, or shift to having a British Newspaper Archive sub instead!
