Durham Lookup Requests / Mining Accident, Birtley
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 16:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm on the hunt for information about a mining accident which would've occurred at some point between 1921 and 1939 (apologies for the large time period).

My great grandfather, Charles Thompson, was a miner who had a bad mining accident which resulted in a broken leg. As was common at the time, the bone was cut at both ends in order for it to fuse back together which resulted in one leg being 6 inches shorter than the other. From what we've been told as a family, we believe he was working at a pit in Birtley but we'd like to find out more if possible.

Sorry for the lack of specific details, but if anyone can help or point me in the direction of where I might look for further information it would be much appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Catherine, wife of Jonah Grigg, of Hawkshead
« on: Wednesday 27 October 21 17:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm struggling to find a death for Catherine Grigg (sometimes sp Gregg) née Dixon, b.1777 in Torver.

She married Jonah Grigg in Torver on 19 January 1797. They had 2 children, Jane b.1798 and Dixon (1802-1805). Jonah marries for a second time on 8 August 1826 in Hawkshead, where he marries Hannah Creighton and states he is a widower. Despite this I can't find a death for Catherine.

If anyone can help that would be much appreciated.

Dublin / Early 20th Century Pantomimes
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 19:28 BST (UK)  »
A photo has recently come into my possession of my 2xgreat aunt which shows her in costume for an appearance in a pantomime. Unfortunately there is no date on the picture, but on the back she has written that she had to have the photo's taken to put outside the theatre.

I am posting on here in the hope that someone may be able to point me in the direction of any information regarding the history of pantomime performances in Dublin as we would love to know more about her career. We suspect she would have been part of an English Troupe, possibly from the Lancashire area, and it has always been a family story that she was a Tiller Girl. Given that she was born in 1890 I think it is possible it was taken some time after 1905.

I apologise for the lack of information I have but any help/guidance would be great.

Cumberland / St Bees marriages
« on: Sunday 18 August 19 12:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone can help with further information relating to the marriage of James Sanders and Mary Dixon which took place at St Bees on 26 September 1801? I'm not sure if either of the couple were from Cumberland originally so anything would be helpful at this stage.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Henry Sanders b.1808
« on: Sunday 18 August 19 12:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for further information relating to the baptism of Henry Sanders who I believe was born in the Congleton/Astbury area in 1808. I have found a baptism at St Peter's in Congleton on 28 Aug 1808. His parents are given as James and Mary but any information about them would be really helpful.

Cumberland / Jane Mawson, marriage 1830 St Bees
« on: Monday 05 August 19 15:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information about the marriage of Richard Clish and Jane Mawson in St Bees on 11 April 1830. Ideally I would like to find out if there is any reference to Jane's father or people who may be her family members. From the census information, Jane was possibly born in Scotland (one census specifies Dumfries?) but married in Cumberland. Any information would be a huge help.

Scotland / George McGavin b.1852
« on: Thursday 20 June 19 15:33 BST (UK)  »
I've already posted a message on the Renfrewshire page regarding George McGavin but haven't had any luck with information so I thought I'd widen the search to the whole of Scotland. George was born in 1852 in Johnstone,Renfrewshire and was the youngest son of Robert McGavin(a blacksmith) and Jane Montgomery Reid. I have found him on the 1861 and 1871 census and would like to find out what happened to him after this. Hopefully someone reading this might be able to help and point me in the right direction.

Canada Lookup Request / John McGavin b.1874
« on: Friday 17 May 19 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking for information regarding John McGavin, born in Preston (Lancashire) on 8 Jan 1874. He married and had children in the UK but believe he went to Canada. I have a found a John McGavin who fits in terms of age and occupation leaving Liverpool on 8 Feb 1906 onboard the Numidian. I'm not sure of the port where he disembarked as two destinations are given on the manifest; Halifax, Nova Scotia or St John, New Brunswick. Either way, he would have arrived in Canada on or around 21 February 1906 and the place of ‘ultimate destination’ given on the passenger list was Toronto. It is not known if John ever returned to the UK although I do know that neither his wife or children joined him in Canada. If anyone can help with any information about John that would be great as he is proving to be a real puzzle!

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Blucher’s Lodge near Caistor
« on: Sunday 25 March 18 20:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the location of Blucher’s Lodge, which according to newspaper reports, was near Caistor. It was the home of the Thompson family up until the 1850s but searching on Google comes up with nothing. Hopefully someone with some local knowledge may be able to help.

Thanks in advance!
