Devon / John Hunt born about 1791 possibly Ashreigney, Devon, England

This is related to another thread regarding his wife Mary Pope.

He was listed as from Ashreigney, Devon on the marriage document to Mary Pope.  He signed that document. He married  Elizabeth in Chittlehampton so possibly from there.

The previous thread mentioned above  found many useful connections but unable to find anything about John Hunt before his marriage to Elizabeth Jarman (Jerman, German, Jirman) in Chittlehampton, Devon, England 26 April 1820.

From Canada records, it seems there were at least two Hunt families that came to Canada  but can't connect them to John Hunt as we have found nothing on his parents or siblings.

John Hunt was a blacksmith and farmer.  He passed 12 JUL 1879 in North Dorchester, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada and informant was his son George Hunt 1827-1899.

I have a mystery around two children names Janet Clark of Petty.  Daughters of Donald Clark, Schoolmaster and Jane Campbell.

I have Janet baptized  18 Oct 1826 in Petty and also Janet baptized 10 Apr 1828 born 23 Mar 1828.

Both confirmed with records attached.

I find no death for Janet 1826 in Scotland's People.

Janet 1828 was usually called Jessie but baptism is clearly Janet

Would a death of the 1826 child possibly be unrecorded?

A Janet appears with family in 1841 Census which would fit 1828 but they are so close.

Trying to decipher street name in attached.  Name next to the address James Giocoffi (??) is the owner of what appears to be a large hotel valued at what appears to be $80,000

It is a hotel where a granduncle stayed while working in British Columbia.

DEATH 02 AUG 1879  4 Phene St, Chelsea, London, England

John Smale

BIRTH Abt. 1803  Littlehampton, Devon, England

DEATH 21 JAN 1879  4 Phene St, Chelsea, London, England Parents believed to be John Smale and Francis Unknown. Some suggest wife was Ann and there is a birth 16 Jan 1805  and baptism 17 Feb 1805 recorded in Exeter in England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1936

They married 27 Dec 1832 Exeter All Hallows Goldsmith St Devon

A number of researchers had pointed to several children but the birth dates for one is prior to marriage and documents are not provided by others.  The suggested children are


John Parker Smale  1830–1891  Birth seems wrong

Betsey Smale 1833–  Seems to fit based on 1841 Census

John Penwarden Smale 1834–1897  Further research finds a John Smale and spouse Penwarden which would make sense and eliminate this child

William Smale 1835–1898 Seems to fit from 1841 Census  Potential baptism 11 Jan 1835

James Smale 1836–1897 Possible from 1851 Census  Birth suggested as 20 Sep 1836

Mary Ann Smale 1838–1912 Birth suggested as 10 Jul 1838 and this child fits my tree as I have images of her in personal photos and another researcher has same image both with name written on back

Lucy Smale 1840– Seems to fit from 1841 Census

Fanny Smale 1841–1905  Married a mariner Nicholas Moalle in China according to some .

Lots of "hints" but documents at my end are lacking.

I have more unconfirmed details on marriages for some of above but simply hypothetical for the most part.

I am trying to confirm parents of Janet Urquhart  on attached record.

I believe this is Janet Munro that married William Urquhart 13 Nov 1829 Fearn, Ross-shire, Scotland

The name of her father does not seem to be Munro on document.  Was this a middle name or something else.

Mother named appears to be Helen McKenzie

I have a birth or baptism for a Robert Turner.  I believe he is my 5th great grandfather.

It looks like his father was William but the remainder is a challenge to read.

Trying to decipher two baptisms/births for Rose family in 1732 and 1733 in Inverness.  Was looking for a Lydia Rose born about 1732 and found what looks like Alexander(?) on same page 1733

Father appears to be Hugh Rose but cannot determine rest of the entry for either child.

I have the image for the birth of Donald Clarke 05 DEC 1777 in Petty, Inverness-shire, Scotland that list baptism on 12 Dec 1777.  Born to William Clarke and Lydia Clarke.

I see a Charles Clarke following 12th December but can't decipher what follows Charles Clarke.

Looking for a great granduncle  Charles Clark Born 11 Aug 1824 in Petty.

We know he was a teacher and came to Canada about 1871 but his life between 1841 Census for Petty where he is at the schoolhouse with his father, the schoolmaster. His father Donald passed in 1853 and much of family left area.

As Charles was a teacher, we assume he may have left for a school elsewhere in Scotland.  Someone suggests they found him in Edinburgh but have no supporting documents.  My search does not find that but perhaps I am not looking in the correct archives.
