Hi,

I was wondering if this photo could be improved at all. It seems to have been cropped. I don't have the original. Many thanks in advance,

Renatha

Somerset / Harriet Button PADFIELD B. 1883 Coleford, Somerset

The family story is that Harriet was deaf. I wondered if this would appear on the census in either 1891 or 1901? By 1911 she was living in Bristol.

Australia / Sydney to Darwin in 1912
« on: Tuesday 21 May 19 07:23 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother arrived in Sydney from the UK on 27 August 1912 and by 15 September 1912 was in Darwin to marry at first sight, which went ahead.  ::) Does anyone know how she would get there? From the research I've done, train was not an option. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter...

My grandmother Harriet came from England to Darwin in 1912 to marry David Thomas. I don't know who has written information on the photo, but some of the names are incorrect. The 3 children are Daly, Alex & Marge (my uncles and aunt). I'm hoping there is some way of improving the quality of the photo. Many thanks, Renatha

Tyrone / Is Anyone able to tell me why my G-GM would have left at age 15 in 1866?
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 09:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - I've just watched a repeat of WDYTYA (Aust) with Ray Martin's story which takes him back to Ireland for one ancestor in Tipperary to find out why he was transported for life. It turns out he was one of the Whiteboys and there was, as is typical, much contextual information provided about the times in late 1820's Tipperary.

I know I could google it, or go to the library and try to find a book about it, but it would make it much more real to get some idea of what was happening in Co. Tyrone (particularly Dungannon and/or Omagh areas) politically and religiously in the mid-1800's when my G-GM (aged 15 & Catholic) and her sister (aged 22) travelled by ship to Australia via America, from someone who knows the local history in a broad sense. Hope I'm not asking too much, or it's a bit insensitive. I haven't been able to find any more on that branch and it's quite frustrating being the other side of the world.  :( :(

Norfolk / Is this Possible?
« on: Sunday 18 December 16 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
My x4 Great-grandfather John NEEDHAM was born in Walsoken, Norfolk in 1781 and have just followed Ancestry green leaf to other family trees which give his parents as John NEEDHAM b. 1728 and Ann b. 1730 m. 1748 making them 53 & 51 respectively at the time of his birth. There are twin older sisters Sarah & Alice NEEDHAM b. 1776. This isn't right, is it?  ::) :o

Australia / Lookup Request : William Charles REED divorce from Minnie Isobel HORTON
« on: Friday 02 December 16 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
My father William Charles REED married Minnie Isobel HORTON (maiden name) or FORREST (prev. married name) on 26 Feb 1938. His given address on 23 Dec 1941 is 108 Sylvan Rd, Toowong when he enrols in the Army naming Minnie as his wife and stating he is married but by 7 Jan 1942 he gives his address as Wilson St, Southport and is "single" on his army record. He is discharged from the army in 1947 and in 1949 his address is 20 Belgrave Tce, Petrie Terrace. He marries my mother Phyllis May Thomas on 15 Dec 1951. I am interested to see if there is a divorce.

I made a request to Qld State Archives with the following response:

A search of ArchivesSearch (the Queensland State Archives’ catalogue), indexes on the Queensland State Archives’ website and other Queensland State Archives’ finding aids did not find any references to records relevant to your research.  I have searched the Supreme Court, Southern District, Brisbane Writs for the years 1938 to 1943 inclusive with no result.

Unfortunately they will not look any further. Can anyone assist to see if there is a divorce after 1943? If this is too recent, let me know.  :(

Many thanks, Renatha  :)

Australia / Lookup Request Richard WHITE named Co-Respondent with Eliza BETTS 1881
« on: Sunday 27 November 16 04:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - I'm not sure if anyone can assist with pinpointing Richard WHITE as he seems to have been a fly by night in my G-Grandmother's life but as her husband had deserted her and their only child, and later names the said RW as Co-Respondent in Divorce Proceedings in Brisbane in 1881, (found on Trove) it seems my Grandfather was the product of their union, William REED, rather than previously thought, her husband Charles Alfred REED (though Eliza gave that surname to both William and a subsequent child George REED fathered seemingly by Charles LUBEN also named as Co-Respondent).

My calculations about George REED's birth means that White was probably the father of the second child as the evidence shows Eliza was known to have been sleeping with him in November 1875; my grandfather, William REED was born on 26th December 1876 in Brisbane, though Eliza names Charles Alfred REED, 25 years, Blacksmith as the father on the birth certificate. The third child George REED was born in 1879 and LUBEN was still around in 1881 when the petition was served on him as co-dependent sometime before 22nd April. Richard WHITE could not be found at this time.

Eliza was born 3 Apr 1854 in Brisbane to William BETTS and Sarah Ann NEEDHAM.

I would appreciate any leads, as I virtually have nothing on RW and it is not an uncommon name. Thanks in advance.

Renatha

PS I realise I've probably got this in the wrong place, my apologies but I'm not sure how to move it.
Moved.

We can watch Jodie Kidd from UK Series 5 at 4.30pm today. I wonder if I'll still be living by the time we get Series 13 from the UK?  ::)
