New Zealand Completed Requests / New Zealand BDM - alternatives?
« on: Friday 22 May 20 05:41 BST (UK)  »
I have searched the NZ BDM records over the past 2-3 years, and also used Papers Past, and I am having problems finding deaths (specifically) that are in the papers, which i cannot locate in the BDM.

This may be my inexperience, but an example may help others give me advice.

I found in papers Past, the death of Elizabeth Ann Shackel, wife of Thomas Edmund Shackel, at Okain's Bay on 5 Sep 1882.
Searching for that death, with a date range 1/1/1880 to 1/1/1885, with variations of the surname only, found no persons at all.
The name variations I used were -
shackel
shackels
shackle
shackles
schackel
schackels
schackle
schackles

The newspaper article was as follows (first line only) -

INQUEST.
AKAROA MAIL AND BANKS PENINSULA ADVERTISER, VOLUME VII, ISSUE 642, 8 SEPTEMBER 1882

INQUEST.

An inquest was held yesterday at Mr Thacker's saw mill, Okain's Bay, on the body of a women named Elizabeth Ann Shackel, a resident in the Bay, .....

There may be alternative records for New Zealand BDM that I'm not aware of. I do search Find-A-Grave and Billion Graves, but I'm not familiar with church records; and i have not searched records in nearby cemeteries.

Any suggestions?

This is not the only "missing" record I would like to locate. Mainly, I am looking for LANDELLS and I am used to trying all the spelling variations (there are separate LANDELS families in NZ and Australia, and UK, that are not mis-spellings).

Armed Forces / Boer War - Harry Podd died 1902 - Hussars
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
I think I have this correct, but perhaps someone can verify some of my gaps or point out mis-steps?

Harry Podd, Private in the 7th Hussars , Service record  4582

The Boer War information I have is from www.angloboerwar.com and the free information from the site www.forces-war-records.co.uk/

I had a suggestion that a Harry Podd born in Suffolk in 1878 - for whom no records of death or marriage could be located, and family information was that he served in the Boer War - matched the information above.

This suggested individual was the son of William Podd, who was born in 1851, and Sarah Forsdike,  born 1854, and all three were born in Suffolk.

So I had Harry Podd - born Sep 1878 in Tuddenham St Martin, Suffolk and died in 1902 after the Boer War in South Africa.

If it is to be true that these match, he had 18 siblings; his father married Sarah Forsdike and he had 2 siblings who both died in infancy (Laura, William);  his mother Sarah died in 1880 and his father William remarried to Ada Girling (b. 1864) and she had 15 children between 1883 and 1905. Sarah's husband William died in 1914.

I would expect some newspaper reports, but as far as I know he was unmarried.

Armed Forces / Boer war death - Harry Podd
« on: Saturday 23 February 19 01:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a little information on Harry Podd who died in the Boer war of disease, 21 June 1900 at Johannesburg. He was in the Suffolk Regiment as part of the 1st Mounted Infantry battalion.
Service record 2707

Mentioned in a few places  -
 http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Boer/
 http://www.angloboerwar.com/

I think he was a resident of Whitton. I can't match him with families (parents), and the UK national archives pages say that there isn't a comprehensive list available (from them?).

Where should I look?

Australia / Landells and Netzler - Queensland
« on: Wednesday 17 January 18 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching William James LANDELLS b. 1866 in Eltham, Victoria who died in Red Hill, Qld in 1954. His parents were William George LANDELLS (1840-1871), Geelong - and Isabella Jane BAILLIE (1843-1880).

William James LANDELLS appears to have lived and married in Samoa.
I have posted elsewhere on RootsChat what I know about the Samoan connection.
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=785887

According to some sources, he married 3 times and 2 of the women were NETZLER, and there are children with at surname that died in Queensland, and there are Queensland connections with another wife, Marguerite Violet LOGAN who had married Edward William ROBERTSON, and there are some ROBERTSON children who died in Qld.

There are few Landells and Netzler in the Qld BDM but I would appreciate any clarification of the Landells-Netzler / Samoan connection, which seems to tie in to Qld. A son, Oscar Frederic William LANDELLS (1904-1985) and a daughter Isabella Martha LANDELLS (1906-1954) were both born in Apia, Samoa and died in Queensland, according to my information.

Other Countries / Samoa - Landells and Netzler
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate some help with records of births, etc in Apia, Samoa.

My direct line is to the reverend  William Burns Landells 1814-1871, who emigrated from Alnwick, Northumberland to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and died in Geelong, Victoria.
One of his  8 children was William George Landells b. 1840 in Sheffield, Yorkshire and d. 1870 in Geelong.
William George Landells married Isabella Baillie in 1863 in Geelong, and he died in 1870 in Geelong.
William James LANDELLS was the second of their 4 sons, and he was born 1866 in Eltham, Victoria (now an outer suburb of Melbourne) and he died in Queensland, Australia in 1954. Parents are named in both records.

Until now, I have negelcted researching this son, and have very poor information to start with.

From various online family trees, mainly MyHeritage and FamilySearch, I have seen William James Landells marriages (3) and children in Apia, Samoa.
Some of these records are totally illogical, in the death of the purported mother before her marriage and before the birth of the child.

These are the 3 marriages I have seen in the online trees -
1898 - in Apia, Upolu, Samoa - to Agnes Phoebe Netzler
1903 - in Apia, Upolu, Samoa - to Henrietta Netzler
1911 - in Apia, Upolu, Samoa - to Marguerite Violet Logan

Agnes Phoebe NETZLER
b. 7 Dec 1879, Samoa
d.  16 Jul 1901
buried European Cemetery, Apia, Tuamasaga, Samoa

Henrietta NETZLER
b. 1 Feb 1856, Samoa
d. 3 Jan 1875 Maalauli, Western Samoa, Samoa

Marguerite Violet LOGAN
b. 16 Jun 1871 Bagot's Well, South Australia, Australia
d. 5 Apr 1928, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

For the Australian Births and deaths, I have checked the various registries. But I would appreciate advice on where to get births, deaths, marriages for Samoa.

I should add that there is another Netzler, Henrietta Catherine - born in Samoa much later than the person listed above. And there are 7 children that I have seen connected to LANDELLS or the 3 wives; LOGAN had a marriage to Edward William ROBERTSON and  Agnes Phoebe NETZLER to a KEISEWETTER (no children). Of the 4 children with surname LANDELLS, 3 were born in Samoa and died in Queensland, Australia.

Australia / Elizabeth Ann BARLOW or DIBBS - married Adam LANDELLS
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 00:49 BST (UK)  »
Adam LANDELLS (1813-1883) married  Elizabeth Ann DIBBS in Adelaide, South Australia  in 1850.
After moving to Victoria and living there some time, his wife Elizabeth died in 1877 and 6 years later when visiting his son in Tauranga, Adam died (1883).

I would like to resolve a small puzzle with Elizabeth's birth name and place (Ireland, 1815 from the Victorian record).

From the Victorian BDM death index, it suggests to me that Elizabeth Ann DIBBS (died as LANDELLS) was previously married, her birth name being BARLOW -

Victorian BDM - Deaths
LANDELLS, Elizabeth
Father: Barlow, Robert
Mother: Elizabeth (Unknown)
Reg. #: 4268 Year: 1877   Age: 62
Place of Birth: IRELAND
Spouse name:  Adam LANDELLS

Death notice in the Illustrated Australian News  on Tuesday 11 June 1877
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/60095410

LANDELLS. -  On the 11th May, at Bolingbroke, Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Adam Landells, late of Newlands, aged sixty-two. Deeply lamented.

Bolingbroke is near Pentridge, now near Pascoe Vale / Coburg; Newlands, is Geelong region - Victoria

Can anyone help with  Elizabeth's birth name and place, and possibly a little more about her arrival in Adelaide?

Australia / Barbados and Jamaica - George James Landells of Burke & Wills infamy
« on: Saturday 29 July 17 11:45 BST (UK)  »
The Burke and Wills Exploring Expedition from Melbourne to the northern coastline of Australia in 1860/61 is generally known to Australians, and has a website dedicated to that saga at the State Library of Victoria (SLV).

DIG - The Burke and Wills Research Gateway
http://burkeandwills.slv.vic.gov.au/

I am interested in knowing for sure some accurate information about a some-time member of the expedition who may or may not be related to my Landells lineage - George James LANDELLS.

Specifically: the family particulars (names and details of relatives, his and his father's, uncle's, grandfather's British Army service in the Caribbean and India, and where GJ Landells was born, lived, and also details about his wife Elizabeth Rosa).

George James LANDELLS / LANDELS, who was commissioned to supply camels for the Burke and Wills  Exploring Expedition, was at first second-in-command of the expedition until an argument with Burke after a short time. Landells resigned or was sacked by Burke, and did not proceed beyond the colony of Victoria.

After the disastrous end to that venture, Landells' reputation was (in my opinion) besmirched by certain agencies, but vigorously defended by one of his sisters living in Bendigo. It makes interesting reading.
In contrast, Burke's inept leadership and skills have been glossed over and he is some sort of latter-day "celebrity" for whom a prominent commemorative statue exists in Melbourne CBD (recently moved while new underground rail works are constructed).

The vital information that I have for LANDELLS comes from the SLV and from some newspaper articles from the time (NLA scans, at "Trove").

About GJ Landells, the bare information that I have collected - not well verified -

George James Landells, b. 5 Feb 1825, Barbados, West Indies; d. 4 Dec 1871, Rawal Pindi, Bengal, India

His wife was Elizabeth Rosa (no surname, dates or place of birth or death, and no marriage date for them).

I have searched the usual places, and I cannot verify any of that information. I am entirely reliant on the information at the SLV - but hope that some experienced researcher at RootsChat can unearth corroborative data and new clues.

Under a similar Topic, I have gained valuable insights about some of GJ LANDELLS' siblings and their families - but so far, none about the (controversial) man himself.

I'm interested in the Landells in Jamaica, if anyone has clues on the family of George James Landells, who was involved with the (Australian) Burke and Wills Expedition in 1861 - arranging the supply of camels.
GJ Landells was born 5 Feb 1825 in Barbados, parents George Landells and Margaret Anderson.
GJ Landells spent a lot of time in India and died in Rawal Pindi. I know of several siblings - Margaret Isabella Morris LANDELLS who married Frederick Patrick KEATING in 1853 in Victoria, Australia. I have names for others, but no birth or death dates though a brother, Bernard Hosea LANDELLS was also born in Jamaica.

Any information would be appreciated.

I would like some help on using the New Zealand BDM index, which I have used before but have a situation where I am lacking the family name.

I want to get the reg # for the marriage of William George Shackel b. 1879 in New Zealand, with Gertrude Sophia (I don't know her last name or any other info).
Is it possible to do that search? There are children of that couple recorded from  1906 to 1916 in the index.
