World War Two / RAMC questions
« on: Monday 02 August 21 18:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have my grandad's service records, but I wondered if there was any way I could find out more about where he was wounded and what was happening in that area at the time? He was in the RAMC (22 Company 436207) and wounded in Northern France on 23 March 1945.

What does it mean on the army recordings under 'postings' when it's written X and a number afterwards. For example: X (ii) or X (iv)?

Are there any WW2 diaries for 22 Company (436207)?

Thank you.

World War Two / Royal Army Medical Corps diary?
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

On my grandad's world war II records, it lists:

1942: 22 Coy
1943: 21 Field Dressing Station
1944: X (IV) List (hard to read but could be "List" or "Y hist")
1944: 176 Field Ambulance 29
1945: X (ii)
1945: 176 Field Ambulance (wounded by this time)

Does anyone have information on the war diaries for this field ambulance? And does anyone know what the X means in the 'postings' above?

Many thanks for your help.

The Common Room / Paid Ancestry account anyone?

Regarding: Parkes/Richer families in Essex.

Hi everyone

Recently I opened up an old box of Scrabble... probably bought second hand at a charity shop and found in it an old pedigree chart for a Richer family tree. Other names on it are Parkes, Balls, Woods, Radford, Powis, Arthey and it looks like Faiers (mostly Chelmsford/Colchester/Langenhoe - Essex). Anyone have these names in their tree?

The only matches I can find online are on ancestry.co.uk but I don't have a paid account there. I was wondering if someone who has a paid account can contact any of these people:

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/person.aspx?pid=-1008377895&tid=7946859&ssrc=

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/person.aspx?pid=-2110761551&tid=194727&ssrc=

...and ask them to come here and speak to me so I can pass on this information.

Thank you.  :)

The Common Room / Parish records vs GRO?
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have a question about parish records vs ordering certificates from the GRO.

A friend of the family copied down a marriage certificate from a parish record at their local records office. As I am struggling to get past a brickwall, I was wondering if there was any point in ordering the certificate as well from the GRO in the hope that it might provide with any extra information. Even if just a tiny bit of info.

Or are parish records and GRO records nearly always exactly the same?

Thank you.

The Common Room / Parish Church question
« on: Friday 24 November 06 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am going to visit a records office soon and I am in the midst of planning this trip. I would like to know generally what kind of information is held that I could expect to find and research. I will be travelling some distance on the train and funds are low so I will not be able to re-visit in the near future. Do I need to phone ahead for any reason?

Also I have often wondered what the procedure is for visiting a parish church. On the television programme 'Who Do You Think You Are?', the celebrity shows up at the church and looks up his or her ancestor's records. I am on the understanding that I must exhaust the resources at the local records office first, however under what circumstances would I visit a parish church instead of a records office? Also, do I need to telephone the church and make contact first before visiting? Is there a charge?

Thanks for any helpful advice.

Armed Forces / Research trip to London: Army in India
« on: Monday 24 April 06 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am going to London tomorrow to the National Archives and Family Records Centre. I am researching an ancestor that was in the British Army and I just found out today that he served in Gwalior and Bangalore, India as well as Afghanistan in the 1870's and 1880's.

Does anyone know if much research can be done on this period of time in India or Afganistan? Especially with regards to the National Archives.

Thanks.
McSorley

EDIT: He wasn't an officer as far as I know. I find the National Archives website a bit awkward to navigate around.
