The Common Room / "British Schools"

A cousin, Mary Thiery Moger, was listed at her marriage, 30th April 1846, Castle Str Independent Chapel Abergavenney, as a teacher of the girl's British School. I tried googling this, but could not find out any more about these institutions. As a lecturer myself, I have a particular interest in teaching ancestors and would like to know more about Mary's work. As a further personal link, Mary's husband, Jacob Myers, was born in Poland, like my father!

London and Middlesex / Preaching licenses of the Bishop of London for clergy going overseas.

I am trying to find out more about Alexander Wickstead,
Two PCC wills are on line;
21st March 1609/10; ALexander Wicksted, clerk, now bound to sea to the East Indies.
3rd February 1612/3; Alexander Weekestede, preacher of the word of God on the good ship called the Peppercorn.
In a printed account of the voyage Alexander is described as minister, however I have been able to find no record of an ordination in the clergy database on line. A retired vicar suggested that, as he was going overseas, he may have fallen under the jurisdiction of the bishop of London.
Any suggestions of further avenues of research would be appreciated.

I came across a reference to a William Wickstead, who I think may be my direct ancestor, in an on-line Index 5o the Act Books of the Archbishops of Canterbury, 1663-1859, vol 2, L-Z, 1680 Middlesex Leases 4, 116. Could anyone please tell me whether the actual leases have been published?

Cheshire / Hassalls of Hankelow and Nantwich

I would appreciate any help in expanding the pedigrees of these families as recorded in the Herald's Visitations. Are they linked?
Specifically I am trying to place a Henry Hassall of Hankelow, whose daughter, according to the 1613 Visitation married Henry Wickstead of Nantwich (d c1571). However, I can't seem to find a Henry amongst either line. I wondered whether the first name might have been mistaken by the informant. I have come across other pedigrees from the same source where names do not match up between the 1580 and 1613 Visitations, or even between spouses who appear in more than one pedigree in the same visitation.  A William Hassall of Hankelow (d1568) was married to Ann, daughter of Sir Henry Delves. A case of too many Henrys?

I would appreciate a second opinion as to the office occupied by William Wickstead (son of William the younger who featured in my last post). He seems to have had an important role in the household of a significant Cheshire gentry family, the Masseys of Puddington. The entry for his burial is in larger script than most others. His Cheshire will also requests the head of that house to act as his overseer.

Searching for further information on Alexander Wickstead/ Wixstid/Weekestede, preacher of the word of God.
Drawn a blank in the clergy of the church of England database, and the alumnus records of Oxford and Cambridge.
 
Two PCC wills;
21st March 1609/1610;  Clerk - sole beneficiary John Wood DD, Rector of St Dionis Backchurch, London.
Probate; 22nd October 1613.

3rd February 1612/3; main beneficiary John Allington, cousin, Tayler of London.
Probate; 21st January 1613/4.

Published accounts of the voyage mention him as the minister, reporting his death early in the return voyage on 13th February 1612/3.

I am trying to work out the relationship of Richard Wickstead the elder, and the brothers William and Alexander Wickstead, described as cousins in the 1601 Cheshire will of Gabriel Wettenhall. Unfortunately the text that describes Richard is rather faded.
The will was disputed, and in William's testimony to the court there is a reference to William Wettenhall, son and principal beneficiary of Gabriel, which has a crucial word I'm not certain of.
Any help would be appreciated.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Arms of the Wicksteeds of Wicksteed and the Wicksteads of Nantwich

The exemplification of arms and grant of crest to Thomas Wicksteed of Wicksteed (1607) is illustrated with a diagram showing the same arms as those of the Wicksteads of Nantwich, as described in the 1613 Herald's Visitation of Cheshire. The pedigree of the latter family states that they were descended from a younger (son) of Wickstid of Wickstid. What I don't understand is why the junior line did not use a mark of cadency to distinguish them from the senior branch. John Wicksteed, the grandson of Thomas Wickstead, gentleman usher to James I, was still alive until 1624, when his PCC will was proved, so it is not a case that the senior line had become extinct. Although this mentions no male heir, just sisters, a supposed daughter and a divorced wife!
