Hi,
I'm trying to trace the ancestry of Catherine Williams from the following marriage:

Marriage: 6 Aug 1883 St Michael in the Hamlet, Aigburth, Lancashire, England
Thomas Roberts - 21, Milk Dealer, Bachelor, Greaves St
Catherine Williams - 21, Spinster, Bran St
Groom's Father: Thomas Roberts, Baker
Bride's Father: William Williams, Master Mariner
Witness: George Runacus; Annie Williams

I know they had a son Thomas Roberts born on the 30th September 1885, at which time they were living at Greaves Street but I can find no apparent census record for Catherine prior to their marriage in 1883, or for the family after their marriage, so I have no way of knowing whether she was born in Liverpool or possibly North Wales.

I have been able to trace Thomas Roberts snr. back in time (the witness George Runacus was his brother-in-law) but can''t get a fix on Catherine at all. The witness Annie Williams may be her sister or her mother but I've now way of figuring it out. I've pretty much exhausted all the usual resources so if anyone on this forum has some ideas they would be gratefully received.

Many thanks, Gordon.

p.s. I have also posted this on lswlfhs.org.uk

Denbighshire / Haniel Davies 1827/8 - 1892
« on: Monday 08 October 18 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to establish who the parents are for Haniel Davies from Glyn Ceiriog. In the 1841 census he is at Pandy Uchaf with his parents Edward Davies and Elizabeth Roberts, and other siblings. However, according to the Llangollen Advertiser he died on the 10th January 1892 at the age of 64. This puts his birth in 1827 (probably). Edward and Elizabeth got married on the 7th April 1828 at which time Edward was a widower. This suggests that Haniel was probably Edward's son by his previous marriage. Unfortunately I can't find any baptism record for Haniel and the only census record I can find for him is 1841 (which may be due to his slightly uncommon name and poor transcriptions).

I think I may know who his mother is, but I'd be interested if anyone has any further insight into Haniel and might come to the same conclusion as I have.

Many thanks, Gordon.

Merionethshire / Irish immigration to North Wales in the 1700s ?
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 19:12 BST (UK)  »
Having taken a DNA test with 23andMe I'm triangulating my results with apparent relatives, many of whom are in the USA who have Irish ancestry but no Welsh ancestry. The results of the triangulations are beginning to suggest a connection between Ireland and ancestors who lived in the Llanddwywe/Llaneneddwyn/Llanaber region of Merionethshire in the late 1700s with the surname Williams.

I can't prove any of this as yet, but I'd be interested in any comments or thoughts about Irish immigration to Wales in the late 1700s.

Many thanks, Gordon

Fife / William Scott and Isobel Greig, 25th November 1797 Scoonie
« on: Saturday 30 June 18 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
There is a Scoonie Parish record for the marriage of William Scot(t) and Isabella Greig, on the 25th November 1797. William was from Scoonie and Isobel was from Kirkcaldie, and the marriage was apparently in Edinburgh.

I have a strong suspicion that they were the parents of my g-g-g-grandfather John Scott who was born in Leven on the 14th August 1803 (I know his DOB from his Master Mariner's Certificate) but the Scoonie parish records are very patchy. I believe that John Scott married Mary Ritchie, daughter of Robert Ritchie and Euphemia Diston (again, not from parish records but from naming patterns for their children).

I was wondering whether anyone on this group may have more information (other than that which is available on Scotlandspeople) about William and Isobel ?  I'm in touch with a couple of people via DNA matching sites and I strongly suspect our connections are in Fife somewhere in the late 1700s or early 1800s and the connection is through the Greig surname.

Thanks and regards, Gordon.

Merionethshire / David Davies & Anne Jones, Llanuwchllyn 14 June 1862
« on: Monday 25 June 18 11:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to trace David Davies and Anne Jones who were married in Llanuwchllyn on the 14th June 1862. I can't find any mention of them in the censuses subsequent to their marriage, or find out if they had any children. It may be that they moved out of the area completely. I thought I'd post here in case anyone has any idea what happened to them.

Anne was the daughter of Hugh Jones from Llanycil and Catherine Roberts from Llanuwchllyn.

Many thanks, Gordon.

Merionethshire / Llanuwchllyn Parish Church (St Deiniols) graveyard
« on: Monday 07 May 18 06:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I know there was a separate thread on Llanuwchllyn cemetery but for the avoidance of doubt I wanted to post specifically about the Parish Church (St Deiniols and which is now abandoned) graveyard. My great-grandmother, Catherine Evans nee Jones) was buried there in 1909. I am visiting the area on the 16th May 2018 and wanted to try and find her gravestone. Does anyone know if there are any records of the location of graves there ? I believe it's not a large graveyard and hopefully I'll be able to find the grave fairly easily, but if it's already been documented that would be a great help.
Many thanks, Gordon.

Lancashire / John Parr and Mary Potter (m 12/10/1851)
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm researching the descendants of the above couple from the Liverpool area. They were the parents of Elizabeth Parr who married a John Scott on the 18th April 1881. Elizabeth and John were my great-grandparents. Elizabeth had two brothers and a sister. William Parr married Alice Beesley, and Charles Parr married Mary Grimes/Crimes. The sister was called Mary (Polly) but I don't know what happened to her. If anyone else is connected with this family maybe we could compare notes and both save ourselves some time and effort ?
Thanks, Gordon.

Cheshire / George Charles Adams and Jessie Isabel Helme
« on: Saturday 27 January 18 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
George and Jessie were married 12/4/1892 at St Mark's, Bredbury. They had a daughter Maud Frances Christabel Adams born on 24/7/1894 who has confused me !
On the 1939 Register her surname Adams is crossed out and replaced by the name Gregson, but I can find no record whatsoever of her marriage. The probate records for both her parents refer to her as Adams and a spinster. She died in 1969.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved !

Thanks, Gordon.

Fife / Leven - John Scott 1803
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My g-g-g-grandfather was John Scott, a mariner. His Master's Certificate says he was born in Leven, on the 14th August, 1803, but I can find no record of his birth/baptism in the Scoonie Parish Registers on Scotlandspeople. I'm fairly certain that he later married Mary Ritchie, and had children William (1826), Euphemia (1836), John (1837) and Robert (1839), but I can find no record of the marriage of baptisms, apart from William in 1826. On the 1841 the family is in South Street, Leven, apart from John Snr. who would have been at sea.

I'm led to the conclusion that the Scoonie Parish records are incomplete. I would appreciate other views on this ?

Thanks, Gordon
