Dublin / Williams in Dublin
« on: Saturday 11 March 23 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying to find some record of my great grandfather's birth for several years and each time I come up against a brick wall. I don't know if anyone on here can help please.
Here are the details.
His name was John Andrew Williams.
Birth 1840 or 1841 either in Dublin or in Cork
First marriage to Jane Gill on 3rd June 1871 age 30. Jane was 18.
Father's name William Williams. Occupation solicitor
John's occupation marine engineer
Place Newcastle.
Marriage was reported in the Carlisle Patriot. Father's name and occupation given as William Williams, Dublin solicitor.

Second marriage to Emma Gill on 7th May 1877
John's age 37, Emma's age 21
John's occupation engineer.
Widower
Father's name William Campbell Williams, occupation solicitor.
Place West Ham Essex.

English census information where the form was completed by someone else gives the birth place as Queenstown and as Cork. Later census information that John was likely to have given just says Ireland.
John Lived in Yarmouth in Norfolk later on in his life.

I have lots of information on his likely father Campbell William Williams and all of the family but I've never been able to find any sort of record that details his birth. I hoped there might be something in a newspaper or maybe in a Merchant Navy list since he was a seagoing engineer on the steamships.
It may be that I've done the best I can. I think any baptismal record would have been lost in the fire. Older siblings' records have survived. The family was not Catholic. I don't know if there are any siblings whose records have also been lost.

This is a photograph of a marble bust of one of my ancestors. As you can see there's a lot of light glancing off it.  This is the only photo I have of any of my ancestors from that side of the family apart from my grandfather.  I was wondering if anyone could give it a bit of colour and whether the whiskers could be removed so that I can get an idea of the shape of the face.  It's a bit of a challenge but I'd be interested to see the result.

The Common Room / Marble busts
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have no idea where to post this question so I'll put it on here.  I have a photo of a marble bust of one of my ancestors.  The bust was made after the man died.  What I'm wondering is how did they make the bust?  I mean how did they get a good likeness?

Armed Forces / Where can I find crew lists for the Royal Navy?
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 08:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photo of someone who I think must be one of my ancestors but I have no idea who he is.  The people on the photographs forum very kindly helped.  I've narrowed it down to this.
The man was a Royal Navy petty officer serving on the HMS Tamar.  The date would have been late nineteenth century and up to 1902.  He had thirteen years service and three good conduct stripes.
I'd like to know where I can find any crew lists for the HMS Tamar so that I can see who the petty officers were around those dates. Can anyone help please?

I was wondering if any could help me to date the photograph below please.  The ship's name on the cap is H.M.S. Tamar.  The ship was built in 1863 in London.  I think the photo was probably taken in the late 1800s.
It may be a photo of my great grandfather John Williams but I can't be sure.  Any other help would be most welcome.  Thank you.

« on: Monday 16 October 17 15:42 BST (UK)  »
I've found a will listed in "WILLS IN THE YORK REGISTRY A.D. I568 TO I585" but I don't know how to go about obtaining a copy of the will or reading the will online.  Can anyone help please?

Cumberland / Parish registers online
« on: Wednesday 11 October 17 07:20 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out if the parish registers for Alston are accessible online anywhere.  I want to look up the details of the marriage of Richard Harker and Jane Harrison in 1738.  I'm hoping the register might give the name of Richard Harker's father.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Jane Harker burial Alston
« on: Monday 09 October 17 10:11 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find the date of death or the burial records for my 4th Great grandmother Jane Harker.  Jane was born in Alston in 1752.  She married John Gill in Alston in 1772 and they had nine children.  All of them were born in Alston.  The last child to be born was Hannah Gill in 1792.  Jane is not listed in the free BMD so her date of death is likely to be between 1792 and 1837.  I'd be grateful if anyone can help with this.

Essex / Maria Julia Williams - West Ham
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 09:30 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find out what happened to Maria Julia Williams.  The last known place she lived in was West Ham in 1881 when she was nine years old.
Maria Julia was the daughter of John Andrew Williams 1841 - 1910 and Jane Gill 1854 - 1876.  She was born in Carlisle in the last quarter of 1871 and she was brought up by her mother's sister Emma after her mother died.  Emma married John Williams in 1877.  I can't find any record of Maria's marriage or death and would love to know what became of her.
