Other Countries / India look up please for Irish family
« on: Monday 15 October 18 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I am trying to find the birth of my great great grandma Margaret knott- father Edward knott

Recently come to light she probably wasn’t born in Ireland and I came across two hits on ancestry but I can’t look at them as I don’t have worldwide subscription. She was born roughly around 1878 as her marriage lists her as 25 but census shows she was same age as husband- 23.

The record I came across is in;
Select births and baptism india. Has her with a middle name of Elizabeth.

Thank you

World War One / What was the age cut off for joining up?
« on: Monday 15 October 18 16:29 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to work out if my great great grandad lies on his records as his 1911 census has him as 32 yet his war recs has him at 32 in 1915 when he joined up.
I’m trying to pin down his birth a little better
All other records have him born roughly 1877/78/79 but the war record makes it about 1883.

Any info would be appreciated :-)

Waterford / How often are civil records wrong?
« on: Monday 15 October 18 14:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
Getting back in to my Irish side but it’s been a struggle with it being a very popular surname within waterford (Sullivan)

I ordered my great grans death certificate to try solve it myself but no luck.

Civil Irish record shows the birth of ellen Sullivan 29 May 1903

Death certificate shows birth as 3 jan 1902

Am I going to be stuck with conflicting records?

Makes me want to give up my Irish search as my other family of Waterford is ‘power’ so I’m struggling on that side too 😔

Ireland / Medal and record help
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 22:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
My great grandfather David joseph power was born in Waterford in 1901.
We have had several tales told to us about him being in the Irish army but I haven’t had much luck figuring out if it was true.
A cousin has recently come across a medal (emergency period) with na forsai cosanta on the reverse. We wondered if it may have been his.
Did they add service numbers and names on Irish medals? Can’t make out anything on our one.

I did a search again on ancestry and found a record for naval reserves number sb 2674 which did include his correct date of birth... but it’s british records isn’t it?

Am I just being silly thinking maybe he served with an Irish army or whatever before he came to England?

The only other hit under his name was on the national army census of Ireland in 1922 but I don’t know if it is him or just one of the many other powers born in Waterford. The age is roughly correct showing 22. Military place- the prison. Shows him as a corporal. Address is down for portlaw though which we have never come across yet either.
Next of kin is mother- mary power...
David’s mum was actually called Margaret but I have heard it being shortened to Mary a number of times on other posts...

Any help would be great as my cuz wants to get the medal restored to wear on his uniform but has to have proof it’s a family members

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Struggling with 4x great grandparents
« on: Monday 30 October 17 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I am really stuggling to figure out which birth/baptism is correct for my 4x great grandparents James Wibberley and Sarah Dearnally.
I have found several records than could be them but because their marriage doesn’t show the fathers names I can’t decide which is the correct ones so I’m at a bit of an impass.

They married on the 27th March 1826 in the parish of kirkburton.
And in 1831 we’re living in hinchcliff mill when they had Samuel, my 3x ggrandad
I know James was born in Derbyshire but on census I see ‘shirley’ and ‘bradley’ which in turn means I have forums a few births/baptism that could be his.
Sarah has ‘kirkburton’ and ‘wooldale’.

James died in 1872 and Sarah in 1876 ( I think)

I would love to know how all you guys manage to confirm your findings when you get in this rut
Thanks in advance

World War One / Records for R.Wibberley 8th border regiment
« on: Monday 23 October 17 19:19 BST (UK)  »
29456 pte R.Wibberley 8th border regiment
I have his medal roll index card and medal and award roll
Also an image of him and a friend in his uniform (I have to guess which is him even though I should clarify it with my grandad but forget each time I go to see him)  but wondered if there was anything else I could possibly find?

Totally new to looking up all our family history but my great grandad is someone I would really really like to get to know as much as possible.
I recently found out on here actually that he was a prisoner of war at lumber, captured the day after he arrived on the front line... does this mean he didn’t actually see battle do you think?

If anyone can find more information or suggestions on where to look I would be eternally grateful as I’m getting overwhelmed by other leads also

Thank you advance :-) x

Waterford / Birth records- Power
« on: Monday 09 October 17 04:39 BST (UK)  »
My grandma and her siblings were all born in Waterford and I would like to know how to go about getting their birth information so that possibly in the future I can get real copies of their certs.

They all ended up moving to England to work/marry/become parents.
My nan and her 2 remaining sisters died in 2013 so I can’t go to the horses mouth if you know what I mean.
My friend gave me one website (forget what it’s called at this second though) but for the life of me I just couldn’t find any of them. I have their parents and grand parents but not any of these who were born from around 1930-1942

Any help will be much appreciated weather it’s a website link or something more in depth x
