England / Mary Ann Cohen Islington death 1843, which church register?
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 20:08 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the death church register entry for Mary Ann Cohen (born Borrett, 1st marriage to Thomas Girtin).

I've attached the death certificate info from GRO but I am hoping that the church record might have even more info, and it would be great to know where she was buried. I have looked through quite a few church books but haven't been able to find it so far. Most of her life events seemed to happen in St Mary, Islington but I looked through many of those records and didn't find her.

Mary Ann was with her 2 sons George and William in the 1841 census in the City of London after her husband Edward died in 1840 (which I also haven't been able to confirm but his directory records go quiet after 1840 and in the census she is a widow - it would also be great to know where he was buried but he may have died abroad.) She then seems to go back to Islington near where she spent most of her life, variously, in Lower Road, Nelson Terrace and Suffolk Place.

Maybe I'm missing a trick on working out which parish church she might have been buried in. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Very many thanks, Colee

England / HOGG dau married to Dr Thomas Girtin c 1830?
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 08:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am trying to work out why all 5 of Thomas Calvert Girtin's children, (son of the artist Thomas Girtin, dates 1801-74) had Hogg as their middle name, assuming that the mother of Thomas' wife Rachel Haward (from Suffolk) was originally a Hogg. But I can't find any evidence for her. Rachel was born in 1803 I think in Barsham, Suffolk.

Might anyone have better luck (or skill) than me?! Very many thanks, Colee

Europe / Judah Cohen from AMSTERDAM in mid 1700s/early 1800s
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'm researching a Judah Cohen who I believe may have been from Amsterdam. He lived in Hackney (Middlesex then) and in the early 1800s had a premises at Great St Helens in the City of London, with his brother Edward, listed as ship brokers. He was married to Esther. At the same time was another Judah Cohen whose brother was Hyman, who lived in London (buried in Herne Hill London) and had a lot of business (yes unfortunately slaves too) in the West Indies. He was married to Grace. I am trying to work out if they are related, so whether the one who was Esther's husband was from Amsterdam too. Any thoughts/help I'd be extremely grateful.
Very many thanks, Colee

Other Countries / South American records: Marai family from Budapest
« on: Saturday 21 January 23 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'd love any help with trying to locate the Marai (Mayerhof) family from Budapest. Andres Marai (born 1919 in Hungary) and Susana Szego (born 1916 Hungary) with their son arrived in maybe 1950 in Brazil, later moved to Argentina I think. How can I find out where they settled and probably later died? Very many thanks for any hints.

Other Countries / Hong Kong births 1931/2
« on: Sunday 16 January 22 14:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for 2 births in Hong Kong, in 1931 and December 1932, a son called Sonny Toledo/Bone and daughter perhaps Dolores Janet. The parents were Rose Ida Bone or Toledo, and Herman Toledo. Herman was from the Philippines and Rose was born in Shanghai to a British father.

Are there any publicly available records that anyone could very kindly point me to? I haven't been able to find anything on Ancestry.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / William Thomas Butterworth last record Lambeth 1913
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 08:10 BST (UK)  »
What happened to my great grandfather - I would love some help!
William Thomas Butterworth was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 23 February 1870. He had a son, John, with 1st wife Catherine Snape then 3 more children with my great grandmother Sarah Yates, in 1900, 1902 and 1904 (by then based in Chatham, Kent). He disappeared (the story my aunt was brought up with was that he 'died in a brawl'. However, DNA matches have recently thrown up another son he had, Roy Payne, by Gertrude E Woollett, which was registered in Lambeth in 1913.
Any ideas how I can trace what happened to him? It would be amazing to find out (I've been trying on and off for a few years). Thank you!

Other Countries / Palestine Regiment from WW2 1944/6: is there a list of names?
« on: Monday 08 February 21 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm looking for a soldier (son of Mor Paneth and Borbala Schvarcz) born in Budapest in the 1920s who joined up in Palestine in 1944/5 and probably returned there after the war. He looked for his family through the Red Cross after the war, including his half sister Malka/Malvina/Margit Paneth Weisz who was married to my father's cousin - she died in 1980 in Be'ersheva in Israel, and my father's cousin Jeno Weisz died in Be'ersheva in 1990 but I'm looking for their son. I'm hoping if I find information about the soldier, it may lead me to the Weisz part of the family who emigrated to Israel in the 1950s, he may have helped them.
Any ideas I would be deeply grateful, many thanks.

Hello,
I am looking for a 2nd cousin born in October 1946 who emigrated with his parents Malka and Jeno Weisz in the late 1950s. Does anyone know the likely route they might have taken and how I can look at the ship lists?
Many thanks
Colee
