Family History Beginners Board / Charles A Betts - A mythical man??
« on: Sunday 06 August 23 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help me find some information regarding Charles Arthur Betts.

He appears as the father of another Charles Arthur Betts on his sons marriage certificate, dated September 8th 1907 when the son married Elizabeth Minnie Gilbert.

This seems to be his only appearance in the census.  I believe the son, Charles Arthur Betts is living in Islington in 1901 with his mother Alice Betts and his sister Ruth. Alice is living on her own means.
In 1891 Alice's children are Arthur Jnr? Charles and Ruth.

I cannot find birth details for any of Alice's children.  The only place he is mentioned is on his son's marriage certificate.  I am beginning to think perhaps he did not exist though Alice shows as a widow in the 1911 Census.

Can anyone help me find this Charles Arthur Betts, Traveller, his 'wife' was born approx 1856 in Romford Essex so I was guessing he might be a similar age.  The oldest child was born 1876  and the youngest, Charles born 1887.  Most grateful for any help or guidance.

This is the third photo of my grandfather Thomas Wilson as referred in my Post of 16th July regarding Seaforth Highlanders.
In this photo he is on the right.  Would my grandfather always have worn the kilt i.e. could the other men in the photo also be Seaforth Highlanders.  Might this photo be when Thomas was in the Labour Corps.
Thank you for your help.
(Etiquette wise - could I have made all this part of my original post?  |If so I wasn't sure how to do that.)

This is the second photo of my grandfather, Thomas Wilson as per my post on 16th July - Seaforth Highlanders.

In this photo he is on the left and again I am seeking information regarding the badges of the others in the photo. I note their hat badges differ from that of my grandfather  I believe his badge was a stag's head.
Thank you
Tunod.

Most grateful for the info regarding my Seaforth Highlanders photo.

I wondered if you could glean any further information either about my grandfather and his service record or the other gentlemen in the attached photos.

I think I will have to post all three photos separately cause of their size?
In this photo Thomas Wilson is on the left, (wearing a rather fetching bonnet!)  Could anyone identify the hat badge of the man on the right.
Thank you. Tunod

World War One / Seeking help with photo of Band - Seaforth Highlanders ?
« on: Thursday 16 July 20 15:38 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help identify the attached photo which was in my mother's possession
Both my grandparents had family members who fought in WW1.  As the musicians are wearing kilts I have assumed they may be Seaforth Highlanders as that was who my grandfather joined (some of my grandmothers family were in the Accrington Pals - but I have been able to trace them).
My grandfather was Thomas Wilson, born in Accrington May 1894.  I know he joined the Seaforth Highlanders but always wondered why - or did they recruit in Lancashire?  His Regiment N. in the Seaforth's was S8995 and he was a Private/Warrant Officer Class 2.  At some point he ws injured and moved to the Labour Corps Reg No. 122062 where he was a Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant. I know he had a Chinese Batman which always intrigued my sister and I.  Would they have been in the Labour Corps?
He survived the war and subsequently married my grandmother Alice Beaghan.  I have been able to find census details etc. for both my grandmother and my grandfather but would like to find out more regarding my grandfathers service with the Seaforth Highlanders if that is possible.  I do have photos of him in uniform.  Can you help me identify the musicians and perhaps where the picture might have been taken. Many thanks Tunod

Family History Beginners Board / The mysterious Charles Alfred Betts -
« on: Tuesday 13 August 19 18:45 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth details of Charles Alfred Betts who appears on the census of 1911 as being married to Elizabeth Betts. - The census states he was born in Islington and says he is 31 years old.  On the marriage certificate of Charles and Elizabeth he lists his father as also Charles Alfred Betts (deceased) - Traveller.
I have found a probable entry for the Charles Alfred I am tracing in the 1901 Census - living at 146 Gladstone Avenue, Wood Green with his mother Alice and sister Ruth but  I am having great difficulty finding any record of his father - and cannot find his birth certificate to verify that his father was Charles Alfred and his mother Alice ?
Would be most grateful for any help in finding the birth certificate of Charles Alfred Betts, born 1881 in Islington. tunod

I am trying to learn more about Alfred Stanley Ellis who was born in September 1891, I think perhaps in the UK.
I believe he is sometimes listed as Alfred Stanley Ellis and sometimes as just Stanley Ellis
In 1931 he travelled to St John from Liverpool on the Duchess of York, Occupation Gov Staff, Residence Canada, residence in UK, Old St James House,  Park Place, City of Westminster.
In 1939 he travelled from Liverpool to St John , again on the Duchess of York
In the 1939 register he is listed as living 7 Park Place (Also known as Old St James House), city of Westminster and occupation is Engineer, Ford Motor Company.?
In 1940 he travelled from Canada to Liverpool, giving his address as Canada House.

In 1939, he is listed as married but I have not been able to find any history of his marriage.

I would like to learn more, if possible of his time in Canada as in 1931 he give his residence as Canada.

Would be grateful for any help and or guidance as to where I might look for more information.
Many thanks Tunod

The Common Room / Adoption records from Queen Charlottes Hospital Hammersmith 1941
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi - Could anyone advise me how I should start to go about finding records for the adoption of my sister.  She was born in Falmouth in 1941 and family history says she was given up for "private adoption" at Queen Charlottes.  Don't quite know why Queen Charlottes is involved but my mother gave her address as 7 Park Place Westminster at the time of registering the birth.

Would be grateful for any guidance as to where we can look for more info.
Many thanks Tundo
