London and Middlesex / John Knyffe 1469!
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find out about a man called John Knyf (Knyffe).
He was a cousin of Thomas Pymme of High Wycombe (& is mentioned in Thomas' 1505 will as deceased). John left Thomas property in Cripplegate without which Thomas left to his son.

I can find no mention of a John Knyf anywhere other than in the Court of Hustings where his will was proved 1469/70. I am not sure if it is the same John as neither Pymme or Cripplegate are mentioned.

In John's will he mentions the below properties:
"le Seven Sterres," within the Bar of West Smythfeld, and also his hostel called "Ie Ramme" in the parish of S. Sepulchre.

Does anyone know if there is a registry of old pubs please as perhaps I can find out more about him there.

I have searched for John Knyf (and various other spellings) and can't seem to find any records for him (I did find a Thomas Knyffe but don't know if they are connected.

Best wishes Emma.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Shared coat of arms
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I just wondered whether 2 families with a shared coat of arms are likely to be related please or whether a coat of arms remains the same just because they have the same surname?
Example Busby of Addington and Busby of Uttoxeter, the awards were given in the 1600's and they have the same coat of arms but don't have a common ancestor that I can find in the 15 or 1600s.

Best wishes, Emma.

Hello,
I wondered if anyone might be able to help work out how the other Busbye names mentioned might be related to Richard who had dies please? Due to size and copywrite I can't load the whole thing.
What I do know is Richard was the son of John Busby who dies in Burford making a will in 1530. Richard's mum was Elizabeth. In 1550 there was an inquisition (after his mum died) stting his next of kin was Alice Sheppard (presumably nee Busby) wife of William Sheppard of Lydcot regarding land in Middlesex. By 1561 he was seized of his father's land and property in Burford and I am trying to piece together several Busby trees but can't work out of these Busby's mentioned are his next of kin and if so how they are related to him.
Many thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Emma

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Translation bot!
« on: Saturday 30 September 23 21:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I just wondered whether anyone knows if there is an app that works like Google translate but for images of legal latin text from the Tudor era please?

I ordered a document from the national archives that I can't read. I used Google lense to try and translate it but it didn't work.

I tried transcribing the Latin into a typed version of the Latin but it couldn't translate what I thought was the correct letters into English (I guess I misinterpreted the letters) .

I am at a bit of a loss but with improvements in AI I wondered if there might be an app for this purpose?

Thanks and best wishes,
Emma

Hello,

Please could someone help me to make out the given name of Thomas Pymme's cousin ?? Busby from his 1549 will? I thought it was Joane/Jane/Jaine but if you comepare the 1st letter with the J from 'Jacket' above it looks different (although could be due to lower/uppercase)

(last word, 16th line down https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/5111/images/40611_311132-00005?pId=915585)

Thanks for reading my post.

Best wishes,
Emma

The Common Room / William Shackleton 1591 coiner
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone might be able to help please?
I am trying to find out about a Justyniyan Rogers d 1551 Cornhill, Middlesex, London to figure out my Oxfordshire Busby family tree.

He had been left property in Oxford by Richard Busby of Great Tew in Richard's 1539 will and property at Cornhill in Thomas Pymme's will of 1549. Thomas Pymme worked in the exchequer and married Elizabeth, widow of John Busby of Burford d. 1530 (Richard Busby of Great Tew was an exec of John's Burford will). Thomas Pymme mentions a cousin Jone or Jane Busby in his will and also John Busby & Elizabeth's son Richard Busby of Islington (I can't find anything further about Richard Busby of Islington). I also don't know what Elizabeth's maiden name was. Could it have been Rogers?

Although Justyniyan was a Grocer he was allowed to rent property at the Drapers Hall in 1540. The Busby family farmed sheep and some were drapers but I can't find any links with the Busby family in this transaction. He rented premesis 6b Austin Friers.

There are not many records and he didn't leave a will (that I could find) so I am searching the wider family to get some clues.

Justyniyan's wife (possibly 2nd as I am wondering if a first or his mother was a Busby) was Anne/Agnes Hayward, sister of Sir Rowland Haywood 1520-1593 2 x mayor of London and alderman and daughter of George Hayward and Mary Whitbrooke of Salop.

They had a son Rowland Rogers 1550-1573. In his will he leaves everything to his mother Anne Shackleton wife of William and his uncle Sir Rowland Hayward is an exec. Whitebrookes are witnesses tying the family names together.

In 1554 she married William Shackleton at Cornhill. They had Children :
(Boyd's Inhabitants of London)
➡️Gawin 1560
➡️Martha 1561-1631 m 1st Sir William Webb d. 1602, issue includes Gresham Webb 1578-1633, he is a witness to Agnes/Anne Shackleton's 1607 will. 2nd Sir John Baker d 1605. Martha Baker is exec of mother Agnes/Anne Shackleton' 1607 will.
➡️Still born 1563
➡️Elizabeth 1576-1583
➡️Susan 1577-1578
➡️Robert 1578-1603
➡️Susan 1580- m. 1st Thomas Tic or Tie. m. 2nd Cordell Saville 1546-1615  son of Sir Henry Saville of Lupset, high Sheriff of Yorkshire and Joan Vernon. Pedegree = Royal College of Arms and Yorkshire Archaeological Journal Vol 25 pg 21. They have a son Cordell Savell of Clerkenwell (visitation 1623) who married Katherine Hunings dau of Edward and had issue. Susan and her son Cordell are mentioned in Anne/Agnes Shackleton's will.
➡️Joyce 1583-
➡️James 1586-
➡️Chidock 1589-
I can find no further records for Gawin, Joyce, James or Chidock. I am wondering if perhaps the family were Catholic, perhaps Chidock was named for the Chideock martyrs?

It is also possible that a scandle involving William Shackleton resulted in the death of his sons or his/their obliteration from the records.

When looking at other trees on ancestry I found an image of a page in a book but can't find the source (if anyone can help with this I would be very grateful)

It says:
Pg 505, At the Court of Cowdry 20th Aug 1591 - that William Shackleton goldsmith of London has been apprehended and imprisoned at Winchester Castle and the Lords Treasurer, Admiral Chamberlain + Lord Derbie, Lord Backhurst & Sir Robert Cecil want him sent back to London for questioning.
I can only imagine what questioning by Sir Robert Cecil ment.

Sir Rowland Haywood's will mentions relations in common with his sister's will eg Pillsworth and others but his will omits and mention of Shackleton or any of his married nieces or nephews.

Was William executed? I can't find his burial or any other mention of him after 1591.

I can't work out how the Rogers and Busbys are linked.

If anyone knows the book that the William Shackleton case was mentioned in, or if anyone can shed any light on and of the questions above I would be hugely grateful.

Thanks for reading this.

Best wishes
Emma

Hello,
I wondered if any one could help me please?
I am looking into the marriage of Albert Edward Myers 1926, Montréal, the image on ancestry is blurred and incorrectly gives the bride's name as Mary Ann Harris who was in fact the mother in law.
Some people have translated the bride's name as Melissa Pusey but the text is so hard to read I am not sure.
I can't find an Albert Edward, Mary Ann or Melissa Pusey in the 1921 census.
When they married they lived along  Bourgeoys (Bourgious? ) street.
Is there anywhere else I could look please?
Thank you & best wishes, Emma
