London and Middlesex / Where are my missing Williams baptisms? Southwark St Saviour 1871-1892
« on: Friday 16 February 18 17:35 GMT (UK) »
Afternoon everyone.
I think I may either be missing something really obvious in terms of social history, or perhaps just looking in the wrong places, but I cannot find the parish baptism records for 6 out of 9 children born to John and Mary Ann Williams in St Saviour, Surrey between 1871-1892.
Elizabeth born 1874 St Saviour, Surrey
John Richard born 1876 St Saviour, Surrey
Frances Louise born 1878 St Saviour, Surrey
James Thomas born 1879 St Saviour, Surrey
Henry Charles born 1881 St Saviour, Surrey
Alice Maud born 1892 St Saviour, Surrey
There is another sibling, Mary Ann who was born in 1871 but registered in Lambeth and I haven't looked for her baptism record yet. In addition, I have found two other siblings' baptism records at St Mark Walworth (Jessie Beatrice 16 Aug 1892 and Florence Emily 27 May 1890) but after searching through the entire set of baptism records at St Mark Walworth from 1870 to 1900 I can't find any other matching or even partially-matching records. Census records show the family were living in Ash Street, Newington in 1871, Gurney Street in 1881 and North Street in 1891. John, the father, was a painter.
I've done wildcard searching in Ancestry for all possible matches across London but still nothing. I wondered if I am missing something really obvious, such as them being born in a workhouse with a chapel (so the baptism records would be separate from the parish records). Does anyone know of any gaps in the baptism records for Southwark? Could it be that they just weren't baptised? I can't believe they would be baptised as anything other than CofE so haven't looked at any RC records.
I'd be really grateful for pointers and next steps. Thank you!
