« on: Monday 20 June 22 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

I used a website that showed me the addresses some of my ancestors and i cant remember what it was called.  I could literally click on the person and it would show everyone who shared that address with them in a list.  Showing the HEAD of the house, Wife of the Head and children mostly.

Im looking to find some history on my house. Its my very first home that ive purchased and id like to know about its history if anyone can help guide me to the right records, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Shop Photo from 1970's
« on: Tuesday 22 June 21 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have been trying to find a photo of my nans shop that she opened in 1970 on the side of her existing house.  She had this shop for several years and sadly closed due to a Tesco putting her out of business years later.  Does anyone know where is the best place to look?

It was called Webb Stores, 216 - 217 High Street, Street, Somerset, BA16 0NE.

I have been made aware that the pram race used to start here and that i could possibly find a photo with the house in the back ground.  Ive googled and facebooked historic sites and asked questions but have only managed to find a photo of her house with the shop cut out of the photo, (although it was years before the shop was even there so wouldnt be what im looking for) Not sure what else to do. My nan hasnt got any photos of the shop either.  She is hopefully moving in with me and my family for her last years and id like to get this framed if i can find a copy.

Any help is appreciated, Thank you in advance

Scotland / Adoption, Childrens homes 1950+

hi all

My nana recently passed away and this is a complex and sad case im trying to decipher.

My nana gave birth to 3 children in the 50's with her first husband, John. after the 3rd child was born my nana and John split up.  He took the eldest girl but the 2 younger ones went to live with my nana.  She found love again and struggled to feed the 2 kids with her not working and her new guy in the armed forces, money was tight.  Her first husband never helped her with any funds.  ONe day she went to his asnd demanded he help feed the kids who were getting thin.  The mother in law dragged the kids inside and the ex went out to beat my nana.  The front door closed and my nana never saw the kids again until years after.

Somehow, Johns Mother Mary (who hated my nana) got her sent away for 6 months for Neglect which is why she never saw her kids again.  My nana never stopped searching and her Mother in law was quite high up in the system and knew people.  They went into hiding and eventually, from what we found out, the children all go taken off of John and his mother and put into a care home in the Quarriers home in Bridge Of Weir Scotland in the mid 50's.

Basically when they were in their teens, they found nana and said they were told nana was dead.  They didn't stay close and all drifted apart as nana had her new family and these kids were angry at my nana they believed she let them go).

50 years on, i get a call from a guy saying he is nanas son and he found my tree on Genes Reunited.  he visits a few times in the last 7 years (less than a handful).  Nana was diagnosed with dementia and with my dad poorly and aunt living in Scotland, i started caring for her.  i got her into a residential home and visited all the time to care for her needs.  She broke her neck in a fall and ended up in hospital for 7 weeks before dying of starvation! (dementia caused her to depress her self into not eating).  not one of the kids from her earlier life visited.

When nana died, she didn't have much left as all her funds paid for her living costs in the home.   what she did have left was under 500 pound and she expressed this was to go to an animal charity which my aunt and dad agreed.  Until in comes the children from before! the vultures!

The point of this story is im looking into whether these children were actually still my nanas kids by law.  They were taken from their parents and placed into an orphan home so somewhere down the line my nanas rights and their rights must've been relinquished?

How do i find out if they have rights to claim this measly £500!?  I want to know if my nana was legally still bound to them.

Appreciate any advice - no judgements please.  life was very different back then in Scotland.

Thank you in advance

« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning everyone

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction please?

I am looking for DOB for 2 relatives.  MY great grandparents Helen Docherty Butterworth & George Weir had 6 children.
Helen Weir - 1928
George William Weir - 1929
James Weir - 1933 - 1992
Alec Weir (possibly Alexander?
Nancy Weir
Isabella Weir

I cannot find the last 3's birth year and i cannot look at Census as they were born after the last available one.

I know Nancy had children, 2 of which are Helen Curley and Sandra Curley
Isobella had 5 boys and died of cancer in her late 20's early 30's.

I cannot find anything about Alec/Alex. (my dad referred to him as uncle Alec)

Appreciate any advice you have of where else to look please.  Thanks in advance.

Hi All

Im looking for info on my Great Grandfather Harry Josiah Searl.  Born 17/05/1900 married Ada Lavinia Smith in 1926.  She was born 1901.

I have been working alot on scottish and Irish ancestors so finding Birth certs and marriage/death etc certs has been somewhat similar in both countries but in England, im struggling to find any links to show the info i need.  For example, a Scottish or Irish Birthj certificate gives me maiden name of mother plus mother and father names so i can vernture deeper back.  But the ones on Genes Reunited only give me a yr date, the persons name plus some page number sand volumes??  Where can i dig for English files please?

Hello Fellow Genealogists

I haven't been doing this very long, i got into it in 2005 but lost contact with it.  So here i am picking up. My nana is 89 next week and she has dementia.  She is currently in hospital with a broken neck so im trying to piece this together so i have something to talk to her about as she doesnt remember very well.  I have been struggling to find some info on my GG Nana.  I was hoping some of you could help fill in the gaps please.

Elizabeth Kilpatrick Possibly born in 1877 Banbridge Ireland (need birth date)
Parents William Kilptrick and Mary O'Neil (need birth dates)

Elizabeth Kilpatrick married Thomas Kelly in 1901 (id like to know more about him) (divorced or deceased??)

Edward McMullen (my GG Grandad) married Annie Sheridan 13/04/1896 in Scotland (divorced or Deceased??)

Elizabeth Kilpatrick then met and married  Edward McMullen in 1913
(apparently they had my Great grandma out of wedlock as catholic so had to wait for one of their spouses to die)

Elizabeth and Edward McMullen had my g.gran in 1905 - Agnes McMullen, she was 8 when they married in 1913

Id like to know:

Elizabeth's parents birth dates, location of birth, deaths??

Edwards parents Peter McMullen and /Mary Ann McGill - DOB's? Location of birth, deaths etc?

Annie Sheridans parents (i bought some documents but the dates don't fit so she cant be the right Annie!) all i know about Annie is:
SHERIDAN ANNIE Possible Birth??
F
1875
282/2 280
St Mary

SHERIDAN ANNIE Possible Death??
32
1902
644/9 788
Kelvin

Cant be sure!

And Thomas Kelly - i know nothing except he possibly died on the docks.

The child of EM and EK Agnes McMullen married my G.Grandad William Diamond 31/12/1923 and she lived at Lived at 107 stobcross street, Glasgow when she married William.

This is all i have and i keep spending out money on documents hoping to get more but i find they're wrong.
Id appreciate any help anyone can offer.  I struggle with the Scottish and Irish sides as i cant be sure where they were born as some moved over from Ireland and vise versa.
