The Common Room / Divorce
« on: Friday 18 May 12 20:16 BST (UK)  »
I think my GG grandmother may have got divorced and then remarried. In the BMD index i can find her under both her married name and her maiden name when i think she must have married her second husband.

Does it always appear in the index twice?

Her name was Marie Coker, her first Husband was Bradbeer and it looks like she married somebody called William Lowden in the 4th quater of 1919.

Does anybody know of good software to costore all their family history research. I like the way Ancestry.co.uk is set out but all the software i have looked at and tested looks really poor in comparrison, some of it just looks like a spreadsheet.

The Lighter Side / OCD about indexes and Census returns
« on: Friday 24 July 09 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody else have a slight OCD about collecting all the indexes and Census returns for their Ancestors. If i knew i would i may have never started tracing my roots.

There are certain indexes and census returns that i cannot find for love nor money. It just bugs me every time i look at my tree and their is a gap of 20 years because i cannot find them in a census.

The Common Room / Legal age to marry
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 20:12 BST (UK)  »
What was the legal age to marry in 1868?

I have my GGG Grandfathers birth certificate so i have his parents names

John Hodges and Sarah Ann Chirrill. The only marriage certificate i can find that fits for Sarah is 1868. This would mean she would have been 15.

That is to young is it not?

The Common Room / Mystery
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 18:23 BST (UK)  »
I have birth, Marriage and death certificates for my GGG Grandparents namely

John William Hodges, born 15 Jan 1870 in Langley Buckinghamshire and Ada Selina Robinson born 23 Feb 1872 in Islington London

I have a marriage certificate for these two date 18 Oct 1890.

I found what i thought was the death certificate for Ada. The death certificate date is 1904 and the informant is recorded as widower John William Hodges. Her age is recorded as 31.

I know the names are correct as i have my GG Grandmothers Birth certifictate her name is Jane Julia Selina Hodges. But when i was looking at the 1911 census i found the following details

Head: John William Hodges 42 Langley Buckinghamshire
Wife: Ada Hodges 38 Sevenoaks Kent
Daughter: Jane Jocelyn Hodges 11 Islington

It says that they have been married 20 years which ties up with the marriage cert i have.

Do you think it is possible that Ada died and he remarried? i found a marriage entry for John William Hodges and Ada Barnes in 1908?

I am totally confused ??? ??? ???

The Common Room / Marriage age difference
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 20:40 BST (UK)  »
I was looking for the death index for my GGG Grandfather, i had found him in the 1901 census so i decided to look for him in the 1911 census to narrow down the index search and i found him with his 27 year old wife and his 6 month old son. Nothing strange in that you might think but

He was 60, his previous wife of 33 years died in 1907. He married his new wife in 1910. His daughter from his previous marriage was also living at the address. She was 31 in 1911

33 Years age difference, can anybody else beat that!
