Cumberland / Myers family Gosforth
« on: Tuesday 04 January 22 11:08 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning, looking for the parentage of my 4th GG William Myers born about 1785 in Gosforth. He may have married Mary Smith b 1786. They had Issac b 1807, Elizabeth 1809 and Hannah 1811.
William Myers may have died in Liverpool around 1841. For context, Issac Myers married Esther Bragg from the Parsonage Gosforth. Any information gratefully received.

One Name Studies: A to G / Grisdale's of Whitehaven
« on: Thursday 14 October 21 12:56 BST (UK)  »
My name is Paul Grisdale. Researching the Grisdale family originally from Matterdale but eventually settled in Whitehaven.

My 4th GG was Matthew Grisdale (1752 - 1838). He seemed to do fairly well as a corn merchant. However, one of his son's Thomas Grisdale did not do so well and I believe he became bankrupt and fled to Dublin before moving to Liverpool.

Are there any members who are related to the Grisdale family?

Antrim / John Waters and Ellen Baillie/Bailey marriage help required
« on: Friday 29 January 21 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon. My 3rd GG was a Ships joiner who died in Liverpool in 1880. He may have been born in the Belfast area in 1805. He seemed to travel frequently from Belfast to Liverpool, perhaps for work, and subsequently some of his children appear to have been born in Antrim, others in Liverpool. His wife was Eleanor Bailey (Baillie?) born 1814 and died in 1849 Liverpool.  I have not ascertained a place of birth for Eleanor and have not found a marriage record.
I think the children that were born in Ireland were James 1832, George Baillie 1834, Elizabeth Ann 1839.
I would be grateful for any information.

Lancashire / Low Hill, Liverpool
« on: Friday 29 January 21 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning, my 4th Great Grandfather Joseph Walthew 1786 - 1848 lived and had a painting and decorating business on Low Hill. Apparently the cottage he lived in was called 'The Shrubbery'. Obviously this is now long gone but does anyone know anything about the cottage, any pictures available, or where it stood?

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Alexander Maitland b 1810
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon, my name is Paul from the Wirral. I am looking for information about my 3rd GG Alexander Maitland. He is something of a mystery man!

I think he was born in 1810, in the 1881 census he is living in Hartford in the South of England. He indicates here Musselburgh as place of birth. He died in 1888. No idea who is parents were.

However, the DNA matches I am picking up all have links to Maitland's in Aberdeenshire.

He marries Harriet Walthew in Liverpool in 1834 and they go on to have three children. At his wedding one of the witnesses was a Ann Jaffrey nee Maitland she was born in Newhills, Aberdeen in 1809 and she died in Liverpool in 1841. Was this his sister or a cousin?

Ann was one of a number of Maitland's that settled in Liverpool. One of these Maitland's was John born Aberdeen 1815 died 1881 Liverpool. He was a printer and (wealthy) newspaper proprietor.
Alexander Maitland (my 3rd GG)  was a Book Binder / printer my trade. Was he brought to Liverpool to work in a relatives business?

In the 1851 Census Alexander was lodging in Hay on Wye, Mid Wales. This is a centre for books so was he there on business? It appears that he became estranged from his wife and although he indicates that he was a widow I don't believe this to be the case.

I can find no trace of him in the 1861 or 1871 census. Did he go back to Scotland or did he emigrate before finally appearing again in the 1881 census? Some of the Maitland's did leave for New Zealand so did he do the same?
Any help would be gratefully received.
Best wishes
