Armed Forces / WWI Scapa Flow
« on: Friday 22 September 06 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I think my Gt Grandfather was in the marines in WWI and fought/was based in Scapa Flow.

I don't know any more than this, other than his name.

Is there any way of finding out which ship he was on or what regiment ?

Grateful for any help, Ta.

Armed Forces / How to find if someone was in the navy?
« on: Saturday 13 May 06 12:56 BST (UK)  »
On a birth certificate that I have it lists the fathers occupation as Seaman. Does this mean that he was in the navy?  and if so how can I trace him as he does not appear on any of the census's and I only know his name from the birth cert.

I know there is an online navy records search but my man would've joined before 1873.

World War One / WWI death info help
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have searched the CWGC site and found an entry for someone that I think is a relation.

Lance Corporal W T Holmes, 9951 2nd Battalion, Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry. Died 25 September 1915. Buried in Guards Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.

Does anyone know where I can find more information on him to determine if he is the man I'm looking for??

I am assuming he died in France as he is buried there, where do I find a death cert?

Herefordshire / Hereford/leominster/mordiford
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
Are Hereford/Leominster/Mordiford in the same area of Herefordshire?

I am trying to identify if the William Whiteman that I found on IGI is my relative.

On the 1861 census, his place of birth is Leominster, Hereford. On the 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901, his place of birth is just Hereford.

However, the one on the IGI, his place of christening is Mordiford.

The dates match up, I just need to know where these places are.

Any help appreciated ;D

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 lookup - Budleigh
« on: Saturday 18 February 06 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please look up the following on the 1841 census...

George Bence 1803, Budleigh and his wife Ann, 1808, Budleigh. IN 1851 they were living on Cliff Terrace, East Budleigh.

Also Robert Barns, 1791 and Sarah Barns, 1794, also both born Budleigh. In 1851 they were living 'Back Street' (I think - the writing on the census is hard to read!)

Any help appreciated.

Oxfordshire / Woodeaton House, Oxfordshire
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find someone who is  researching the family tree of either John & Catherine Weyland who were the owners of Woodeaton Manor mid to late 1800's or someone who worked as one of their servants.

I am researching my Gt Grandmother, Isabel, her parents and grandparents. Her Grandfather, William Whiteman, worked as a butler at Woodeaton Manor. He appears there on the 1871 & 1881 census.

Family rumour has it that Isabel was an illegitimate child!

Around the time Isabel was born (1892), William and his wife and daughter moved away to Bournemouth. William's daughter, Louisa, then raised Isabel.

Louisa never married and on the 1901 census, Isabel is down as William's niece.

I have found a record of her birth and will be applying for the certificate soon to see what it says!
I would be interested if anyone has any information!
