World War One / WW1 Medals
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 19:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I have passed down to me my Grandfather's two medals from WW1. -
He was in the Royal Flying Corps. My dilemma is that one medal is not
engraved on the rim, but the one that was has had all the details filed away.

It has puzzled me for a long time.

Visiting an Antiques and Collectors Fair this weekend a stall-holder told me
that this has been known to happen. After fighting and returning home often
suffering from post-traumatic distress, these medals were sometimes disfigured
in an act of bitterness against what they stood for against the enormous sacrifices
made.

Has anyone else come across this .....

William son of John, David David and Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Thomas Hawkins was born in St Pauls Churchyard in the parish of St Augustine in the City of London the eighteenth day of July in the year Eighteen Hundred and Twelve.

Various photos taken on a trip made by George Wakeling, sent on behalf of his company to Basra in 1949 to set up a new flour mill.  Album also includes a newspaper article and two telegrams.
I have no idea where this gentleman came from, album was 'rescued' from a small antique shop and is looking to be re-united with its family.  :)
