The Lighter Side / Suicide burial
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Am I correct in thinking that at one time, anyone who committed suicide was not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground ?  The event in question took place about 1943 in Scotland with reference to the local public cemetery.  Does this still apply ?

Kincardineshire / Unusual Christian name
« on: Monday 02 August 10 21:51 BST (UK)  »
I was born in 1927 and named Isles John Burness after an uncle Isles Kinloch Burness who was born at Inverbervie, Kincardineshire in 1894.  I only wish that my parents had named me John Isles because every person to whom I introduce myself usually comments on the unusual name !  Had I been interested in genealogy when my uncle was alive he would have been able to answer where his first name came from.  I suspect, rightly or wrongly, that his mother whose maiden name was Kinloch had a relative who married someone with the surname of Isles. Should anyone have information on this puzzle (most unlikely !) I would be grateful.

Technical Help / Problem trying to transfer an image to Irfanview
« on: Sunday 23 May 10 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Can someone please explain why I keep getting the following message after scanning and saving an image then opening IrfanView to resize it :-

"Can't read file header !  Unknown file format or file not found !"

I'm using a Canon MP240 Printer/Scanner and the image is saved in a folder C:\Users\Isles\Pictures\MP Navigator EX\2010_05_23. The File name is shown as IMG but even if I leave it or change it to something else, the above message appears.

Technical Help / OpenOffice.org 3.2

I have accidentally deleted everything stored on the 'Open a document' page of my OpenOffice 3.2 programme.  Is there any possibility of recovering the information ?

I realise that there are quite a few free pedigree charts available on the web but I have come across one which allows you to type in the names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death.  The size of the lettering  is pre-determined and the end result is very neat; much more so if, like myself, your handwriting is beginning to deteriorate.
The website is:  www.misbach.org/pdfcharts   Scroll down to 6 Generation Pedigree Chart and click the thumbnail image on the left.

Technical Help / Junk email folder
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone found an email from a friend  in the junk email folder ?  Can someone please suggest a reason for this happening ?  Not that it matters greatly as I always check the folder before deleting its contents and use the 'Not junk email' button to transfer it to the In Box folder.

Technical Help / Incorrect Email address
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 10:08 BST (UK)  »
My list of email contacts includes one with the suffix btinternet.com.  Despite this, after I start to type her  name in the To: box it appears as btinternet.co.uk.  On occasions I forget to alter it and my message gets 'bounced'.  Can someone please advise.

Technical Help / Reduction in size of web pages etc.,
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 14:00 BST (UK)  »
In the course of 'spring cleaning' my computer I'm afraid that I have inadvertently altered something which causes everything shown on the monitor to be reduced in size.  I can always correct the problem by using System Restore but sometimes when I return after shutting down it's back to square one.  Can someone please suggest how to fix the problem ?
