World War One / British charabanc outside Belgian Consulate
« on: Tuesday 26 September 23 12:51 BST (UK)  »
This photo shows a charabanc owned by my gt.grandfather who is standing to the right.
It is parked outside the Belgian consulate, possibly in Boulogne.
Gt.grandfather was a continental carrier and wine importer who travelled a lot in France.

I'm trying to figure out who the passengers might be but haven't been able to identify any uniforms as yet. The civilians look to me like local dignitaries/politicians.
Does anyone recognise the uniforms or have any idea what the event might be?

World War One / New canal through the Somme
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 16:05 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this has been mentioned before.
A new canal, the Seine Nord Europe is to be built, its route going up through Peronne and the Eastern Somme.
The CWGC have been researching the battlefields which will be excavated and are anticipating that the remains of over 700 Allied soldiers will be found. Research will be undertaken to make any identification if possible and the CWGC cemetery at Loos is to be extended for reburials.
A great uncle of mine was killed near Peronne and is one of many with no known grave who are remembered at the Arras memorial.

Ayrshire / Lost Struthers Ayr
« on: Wednesday 12 April 23 19:07 BST (UK)  »
1901 census has Alexander William Struthers b Glasgow 1852 solicitor, wife Jessie Jane née McCall b 1858 Tobago
and 4 children, aged from 20 down to a baby.
The eldest was Annie 20, who married my great uncle. The others were Gertrude18, Robert W 16,John A who attended his sister's wedding in Vancouver and George.
Having nothing better to do this afternoon I thought I would see what happened to the family.
Found nothing, not in 1911 census, no deaths of parents or marriages of siblings. Seems very odd?

The Common Room / Problem with UK wills and probate service
« on: Friday 18 November 22 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to access my grandfather's will. His surname is Porter, he died in April 1938, probate granted May 1938. I've entered the full details but just get linked to a page of surnames starting with A.
Wondered if anyone else has had a problem?

The Common Room / Jackdaw history folders
« on: Wednesday 13 May 20 21:24 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone else remember these from the late 1960's?

There was a whole series covering a huge range of historical events. I remember I had one of the Armada and another of London around the time of the Great Fire. Both had a lot of facsimile documents which really piqued my interest in history.

Aberdeenshire / Esson/Ledingham families
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone else researching these two families in Chapel of Garioch and surrounding areas from 1750's onwards?
My 2x great  grandmother Mary Esson was born in 1817 in Premnay. Her death cert. shows her parents as Alexander Esson and Jane Ledingham.
This is where the confusion begins. The only birth of a Mary Esson in 1817 in Premnay was to Forbes Esson and Mary Leddingham.
Both families were fairly prolific in a small area!
I've been in touch with the owner of the Esson family history site who has written about the Essons of Bennachie, but nothing proven either way as yet.

The Common Room / Ancestry sites not recognising English counties
« on: Friday 10 January 20 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
I don't know if this is a common problem, but twice over the last week, whilst trying to tie up some loose ends, I have found records where the English county has been changed to a US state or place.

The first was on the Find a Grave site which showed a relative having been born in Middlesex County Connecticut rather than Middx UK.
I suggested it be corrected and received an apology from the group who had uploaded the photo, saying that the FAG site does not recognise Middlesex and automatically defaults to the USA address.

The second instance was on My Heritage which showed an ancestor in both the 1861 and 1871 British census as living in Maidstone Kentucky.
Not a huge problem for me, as I knew the correct locations for both, but could be very misleading for someone just starting out.

The Common Room / Long Lost Family itv
« on: Tuesday 22 October 19 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Watched this last night. It covered the work of the MOD War Detectives whose work is to try and identify the remains of British soldiers and trace living relatives.
They covered two cases of WW1 soldiers whose remains had been discovered recently and showed the process of identification, from initially establishing a list of potential names via war records and memorials, right through to holding burial services to which surviving relatives were invited.
I'd recommend it.

The Common Room / Death- district of registration, England
« on: Thursday 05 September 19 13:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to help a relative find her Gt. grandfather's death which occurred sometime after 1918, but before 1939.
Am I right in thinking that a death is registered in the district in which the death lived, unless it happened in a hospital in a different district?
