Evening people

I have searched the usual freebmd website to find my ancester Thomas (Philip) Hancock.  I have found him on several census, his marriage in 1879 to Harriet Good but I cannot find his birth. (If indeed it was registered)

The different census make his birth year circa 1859 and stated that his was born in portsmouth/portsea.

Many thanks in advance.

Reseaching Johnathan BLAKE born in Isle of Wight circa 1782.  He was married to Ann (surname unkown) born circa 1786.

They are only listed on the 1851 census.  Of course they may have died by the 1861 census but how can I get my hands on Isle of Wight parish records.  Also did they married in IOW?

They must have moved to the mainland prior to 1827 as they had a daugher Harriett in 1827 who was born in Portsea.

« on: Friday 09 June 06 07:46 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861 census my great great great grandfather listed his profession as Scientific Draughtmans for the Admiralty - can anyone advise exactly what this might have entailed.  Obviously I know what a modern day draughtmans is but the 'scientific' bit ?!?!??????????

Many thanks

World War Two / 7th Batt Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry - WW2
« on: Saturday 03 June 06 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone shed any light on where the 7th Btt Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry served in WW2.  I know they did go to Italy - in particular Salerno as that is where my grandfather was killed in action in Sept 1943 and believe was part of the "Operation Avalanche" but I do not know much more.

Thanks

Or maybe point me in the right direction - maybe the imperial war museum would be able to help?

England / Help! - Cannot find their marriage (PURSEY/MORRIS)
« on: Thursday 01 June 06 13:44 BST (UK)  »
I am try to find out when my great grandparents married.  Unfortunately all I have is their names - no DOB, no years of marriage nor area!!

Elizabeth Mary Pursey married Alfred William George Morris.  My granddad was born in 1916 (district of Egham) so assuming it would have been before then but he had two elder siblings - their DOB no idea.  Alfred died appox 2 years after WWI and Elizabeth died approx 1944 (this additional info is from my aunt).

I have visited FRC in London and looked in the paper records for a marriage from 1900 to 1920 and came across nothing where the two names married up.  Back then could she has just taken his name and not married although her married name does appear as Morris on other legal documents (my grandmother's marriage certificate).  I have also looked on the freebmd website and still cannot find anything.

I do not know what other avenues to try.
