Armed Forces / Great Eastern cable laying ship
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Family tradition has it that one of my father's ancestors was a midshipman on the Great Eastern when they laid the first cross-atlantic telegraph cable in the 1860s.

I'd like to check this out, but I don't know where to start looking for records (online would be best)

Any suggestions?

Kent Lookup Requests / AKERS, Kent 1919ish (Particularly Desmond Bruce)
« on: Friday 14 April 06 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on the Akers family at all?

I'm particularly interested in a gentleman named Desmond Bruce Akers who was apparently born on the 19th June 1919 (date of birth taken from his death certificate), probably somewhere in Kent (Chatham?). However, there doesn't appear to be a record of his birth that I can see on the BMD images available through ancestry.co.uk.

It did occur to me that his age could be mis-reported, but looking for years on either side and at many many permutations of his surname still draw a blank.

Thanks

Julia
