Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can anyone read the place name
« on: Sunday 10 March 19 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
This is a British Postal Service Appointment Book for Harold E Fenton. He was appointed as a clerk on the 21 Dec 1926 but I can't decipher the next column which should be the place name.
Any ideas?

The Common Room / Very very large BRICK WALL
« on: Thursday 13 December 18 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
I've at long last come to the conclusion that this great-aunt of mine cannot be found unless anyone else has a brighter idea. Her name is Ada Georgina Moth born on 4 Jun 1871 in Gosport, one of 12 children. She was the first born daughter of James Moth and Georgina Emily Mary Hobbs who were married on 18 May 1871 in the Registers Office, Portsmouth, Hampshire, obviously with some urgency! I've found her as a scholar on the 1881 census living at 34 Ivy St, Portsea and again on the 1891 census as a housemaid age 20 living at 4 Lynchford Terrace off Waverley Road, Southsea. Then NOTHING! I've tried, marriages, deaths, immigration so I can only think it must be a transcription error. If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful as I'm writing a book about the Moth family (my grandfather's line) and her chapter is going to be exceedingly short!

World War Two / 14th Army
« on: Friday 06 April 18 12:37 BST (UK)  »
I've found an obituary for the soldier I'm researching part of which says" On the invasion of Burma by the Japanese in the Second World War he was posted as liaison officer to the 5th C.E.F., Burma, early in 1942. After the evacuation he served with the 14th Army, C.A.S.(B.) until the end of the war. he retired from the Army with the rank of Lieut.-Colonel."
I would like to know what the CAS(B) could mean? I thought initially that it might be 'Combat Service Support' as he was then about 50 years of age and part of the IARO so not of fighting age. He was also an interpreter having been in India and Burma since the early 1920s in the Indian Forest Service.

World War One / War Diaries

I've managed to transcribe most of this description of the action but was unsure about the '600x' after 'brought down by hostile fire'.

World War One / Medals
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 10:52 GMT (UK)  »

Stanley Burgess was in the Merchant Navy prior to WWI as a steward. He transferred to the Royal Navy in Nov 1915 once again as a steward. After the war he was awarded the Mercantile Ribbon and Medal and also the British Medal. My question is what branch of the RN would he have joined? I've attached his service records. Would the 'Merchant Services with engagement' in the remarks column be a clue?

Stanley Gilbert Burgess was a steward in the Merchant Navy before WW1 but enlisted with the Royal Navy in Nov 1915 still as a steward. Please can anyone tell me which uniform he is wearing in the photo attached.

World War One / Steward in Merchant Navy
« on: Monday 29 January 18 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
I'm just a little bit confused. I have a steward in the Merchant Navy in 1912/13 but find him during WW1 as a steward aboard HMS Buttercup and other RN ships during his service. He is on the Royal Naval Register of Seaman's Services and also received  the RN war medals of the Star, the Victory and the British War medal. He then reverts back to the Merchant Navy after the war ends.
Would he have had to join the RN or would he have just been seconded?
