Cleaning the church brass ready for Easter, I had a good look at the collection plate .... and realised that the design isn't English (or Welsh) and has three motifs on it which might be Arabic ?   Is it ?   Any ideas where it might have come from ???  And what the three motifs say ?  (Positioned at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock on the plate in my photo.)

Lancashire / Queens Park, Heywood
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 09:17 BST (UK)  »
As a child I lived right next to Queens Park, and played in it almost daily.

Having used Google maps, I've found the house we used to live in, right next to the park gates, and my curiosity has been stirred up !   (We lived in the house with the white door)

Any ideas about this park ?   Which Queen ?   Was it once part of a grand house ?  What is its history ?   When were the row of houses next to it built ?   Were they once estate workers cottages ?

The Lighter Side / Can we erase the past .... or should we learn from it ?

And when the Dambusters film is showed on TV ..... and all the other old films which have kept us sane during lock-down .... will there be a *bleep* when a word from the 1940's is used ?   Double standards methinks, when so many films and TV shows these days use the F word as 'normal' !!

The Stay Safe Board / Diary > Wednesday, 1st April
« on: Wednesday 01 April 20 10:17 BST (UK)  »
Hope Trystan doesn't mind .... I've started todays !

Can I confess that 'wot i rote' the other day was absolute rubbish ?   I  DO NOT slop around all day in battered slippers and a jumper full of holes .... but who would care if I did ?

Today so far I have showered, porridged, put the rubbish out as I heard the bin-lorry approaching, and gave the bin men a thumbs up.

Still reading last Saturdays paper ... I normally throw out the money, sports, travel, glam living sections, but decided as I'd paid for it, I ought to read all of it .... don't think I'll bother again.

What to do for the rest of today ??   Wash the porridge pot ??   Aha ...... Who knows this ?

Scouring out the porridge pot
Round and round and round!

Out with all the scraith and scoopery,
Lift the eely ooly droopery,
Chase the glubbery slubbery gloopery
Round and round and round!

Out with all the doleful dithery,
Ladle out the slimy slithery,
Hunt and catch the hithery thithery,
Round and round and round!

Out with all the obbly gubbly,
On the stove it burns so bubbly,
Use the spoon and use it doubly,
Round and round and round.

The Stay Safe Board / Small moments of pleasure in isolation
« on: Friday 27 March 20 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
Now we are being isolated for goodness knows how long, I'm trying to make a note of small moments of pleasure.   Add yours ....

Here's the first ... my cats were stretched out in the sun on the drive while I sat on the bench and had a cuppa outside ....

Both fast asleep, and a red admiral butterfly flitted past, and delicately landed on the side of the sleeping cat, where it paused for several seconds.

(Camera was, of course, indoors !)

I'd forgotten this (or hadn't noticed) that the Archers thread was still running.    Time we started afresh ...

What's happened to Lynda Snell ?   Someone get me up to date please .... I've not heard the programme for a few weeks.

Searchable data-base is now online, for the next year .... and then will be placed somewhere else and I'll update this if I find out.

I've already traced several friends on it !

World War One / WW1 uniform needs ID, in Jerusalem
« on: Friday 22 February 19 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
The attached postcard was one of a collection brought back from Jerusalem from a friends father or uncle after WW1.   Can anyone ID the uniform of the soldiers outside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre ?   I suppose its possible the postcard was hand tinted and the uniforms might not have been blue ?

Any info gladly received !
