World War Two / Dad in italy November 1945?
« on: Wednesday 04 December 19 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have photographs of my Dad in Italy late 1945-1946. His mother kept a record that he was in Cortina,Taranto, Treviso, Trieste, Mestre, Padua  and visited Venice.I have recently received a copy of his service record but Italy isn't mentioned. He was in the north Staffordshire regiment.

I know Italy surrendered in may 1945 so I wondered if anyone had any ideas what my Dad might have been doing in Italy at that time, or recommend any books websites that might help.

Thank you for any thoughts

Montgomeryshire / Hughes Family Buttington Montgomeryshire
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi I am doing some research for a cousin with surname hughes.

Her ggg grandfather was a john hughes born 1830 Buttington and his father was a robert hughes born 1797 Buttington.
A funny story has been passed down the hughes family that an ancestor was hung for sheep stealing.
His name was (don't know how to spell it ) Malagulva Charlie . ! haha!

Im wondering if the first name is actually a place or parish or small area around or near Buttington ?
Perhaps the word was welsh ?
Would there be any local records of Hangings ?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions

Shropshire / Foundry in Shrewsbury 1888-1891?
« on: Monday 27 November 17 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching My Great Grandfather (basing a novel on him!) and am researching his occupation. On his marriage certificate 1888 he is a foundry labourer living in Ditherington and in 1891 a choker living in Frankwell. I have heard of Hazeldine foundry in coleman but think maybe this was closed by then ? Any Shrewsbury historians who might Know of other foundry in shrewsbury at this time.

Thanks for any help.

South Africa / Thom family in Cape town 1883
« on: Monday 23 May 16 16:44 BST (UK)  »
I have found a record on familysearch.org of the baptism of esselene Thom in 1883 parents william henry thom and mary thom. William is given as a "soldier". Im amazed and intrigued to find this record!
Esseline appears back in london on 1911 census on her own. Cant find parents on any census or a marriage in uk.

trying to guess whether her father was involved in a conflict at the time although no dates seem to tie up with 1883 exactly. Also the surname Thom can be from Scotland and he was perhaps in the Cape town highlanders regiment ? or is it more likely he was born there ?

Just not sure where to go next any advice would be great

Thanks
Chris

« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photo of my dad in a football team and my mum said he played for Shrewsbury Amateurs.? She is 89 so not sure she has this right. Photo was from the 1940's.
Anyone heard of them or is it more likely to be like a pub team ?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi this photo was taken in shrewsbury and my great great aunt is elizabeth buckley (1863-1934) at the front with the white dress. Not much to go on as regards location but she lived in Whitehall street in shrewsbury in  early 1920's. The family were irish catholics so wondered if it was a church event.
Thanks for any thoughts on a date?
