« on: Monday 04 April 16 16:56 BST (UK)  »
There is an 18th century record of a very elderly lady morris dancer who had a tombstone in Willey churchyard. Her name was Margery Brider. Anyone in that area know if it still exists?

I have a reference to a "fine memorial stone" erected to the memory of James Lawrence and his wife Janet Hay (latter died 17 Nov 1848) in Longside Parish Churchyard. Can anyone tell me if it's still there and possible transcribe and/or photograph it for me?

Aberdeenshire / Surnames Book Reference needed
« on: Saturday 29 July 06 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a copy of "The Surnames of Scotland. Their Origin, Meaning and History" by George F Black, published New York 1962? I would like to know what source he means when he refers to "Will" as in "Alexander Pattillo was a member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p.7)"

Any help gratefully received!

Scotland / Clan Septs a myth?
« on: Monday 05 June 06 22:14 BST (UK)  »
I grew up with the idea that if your name is Miller, then you are descended from the MacFarlanes, and if your name is Greig, you're a McGregor. But Miller is a good, honest lowland trade surname, and there were Greigs in the East of Scotland long before the proscription of the McGregors. Is there any historical basis for Clan septs, or is it just 19thc Romanticism?
