Scotland / John Anderson born 1831ish Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Firstly, apologies for the long post, but I want to provide some background.

I am hoping for some help to track down John Anderson’s family. What I know is as follows:

John Anderson was born about b 1831/32 Camlachie Glasgow.

He married Margaret Smith 7th June 1853 Glasgow.

Occupation is Bricklayer.

From SP I have his 1853 marriage and the 1855 birth certifcate of daughter Jean, where he says he and Margaret married in 1852. I haven’t found the birth or baptism of an older daughter, Janette, born around 1853.

John, Margaret and their two daughters emigrated to Australia in 1857.

I found a family in the 1851 and 1841 Scottish censuses which looks promising. I would appreciate second opinions on these, or any alternative suggestions:
1851 census:
Annfield Cottage, Glasgow (St John)
John Anderson age 38 labourer born Glasgow
Janet wife age 41 b Glasgow
John son 19 Bricklayer (!) b Glasgow (= Margaret Smith)
Janet 15
Mary 13
Robert 11
James 6
William 11 months
Elizabeth Anderson 68 mother b Auchterarder Fifeshire
Mary McLean 27 lodger

This is the only John I could find of the right age with the right occupation. If it is the correct family, it is a bonus to have his grandmother in the household.

I think this might be the same family in 1841:
Address is simply Glen (?)
John Anderson 30 Brick Moulder
Janet 30 Brick Dyker
John 10 Brick Moiner
Janet 5
Robert 2
All are born Lanarkshire

Daughter Mary is missing from the 1841 and occupations are odd due to Ancestry’s transcriptions, but are brick related and tally with the 1851 census.

With common names and most of the children probably having left home or married, making identifying them difficult, I haven’t managed to find any if them for certain on the 1871 census. It may be that the whole family emigrated. I have had a look on some of the Australian immigration indexes but couldn’t find them emigrating together as a family. This may be a search for another time, but just mentioned in case anyone can find them in Scotland, or if not, that may be the reason.

I’ve been trying to find the grandmother Elizabeth Anderson bc 1783 in the 1841 census i  the hope that she is with her husband. Without knowing his name I can’t think of a way to identify their marriage.

I can’t narrow down a marriage for John Anderson bc 1813 and Janet either, though I’m not sure that would contain any useful information, but I would still like to find the marriage.

Any assistance with filling in any of the above gaps would be most appreciated.

Though unrelated to this request, I do have an old (long) thread from 2015 on associated families, and can post a link if required.

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

The Stay Safe Board / PharmaT’s special project
« on: Friday 28 July 23 09:31 BST (UK)  »
I wasn’t sure where to post this thread, but hope this board is appropriate.

As many of you might know, PharmaT has been spending some time away from rootschat.

Despite going through a stressful few years whilst continuing to work and care for her girls, she has also been very busy with various ongoing projects, and has now had a book of her poetry published. What an achievement.

The book is available (for preordering) through Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Finding-Voice-Shona-Campbell/dp/9357440852/ref=sr_1_18?crid=1SM4EBDYVFCAO&keywords=shona+campbell&qid=1690291166&sprefix=shona+campbelll%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-18

Please spread the word, especially to any relevant help type groups you may know of. I’m sure PharmaT would appreciate any support (and sales). This book will also be of particular interest to any Scots speakers.

London and Middlesex / Marriage Licences - St George, Bloomsbury - 1770
« on: Saturday 20 May 23 01:45 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone point me in the direction of the marriage licences for St George Bloomsbury?

I have a marriage on the 6th of February 1770 between Robert Akers and Elizabeth Starling - by licence. I have seen the original marriage entry on Ancestry (Marriages and Banns 1754 - 1938).

Internet searches only seem to mention the location of marriages, not licences, but I may be missing something.

I am hoping to find the licence, if it still exists, in the hope of a clue to Elizabeth’s origins.

I would be grateful for any assistance or advice.

Many thanks.

I have a marriage between John Humphrey and Jane Martingale on the 2nd April 1716 at St Gregory by St Paul, London. Familysearch tells me that the PRs of marriages which took place this church between 1559 and 1821 are on FindMyPast.

I would like to know the exact wording of the entry if anyone has access to images of the parish records and would be kind enough to look for me.

I believe that both of them are “of Chaldon” (which is in Surrey) and, although unlikely, I’m curious to know if the entry contains any other information.

Many thanks.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / St Augstein Broxbourne MIs
« on: Friday 21 April 23 13:19 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to locate the MIs from St Augstein Broxbourne.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Alternatively, if anyone happens to have the transcriptions I would be grateful for a lookup. If a headstone is still standing, a photo would be wonderful.

I have records of two burials with dates supposedly taken from the MIs. The first burial is Ann Humphreys in 1862 and the second is her husband William Humphreys in 1880.

I’ve had a reasonable look online but haven’t found mention of any MIs for St Augstein.

Thanks for any help.

Australia / TROVE under threat
« on: Saturday 14 January 23 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
Just read about this in the Lost Cousins newsletter. Trove under threat due to budget cuts. What a tragedy.

Unsure if it will make a difference because generally once a decision has been made there’s no changing it, but there is a petition to sign. Got to give it a try:

https://www.change.org/p/fully-fund-trove

Suspect it may be sold to a subscription site, likely Ancestry, and the deal may already have been done.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Details of Edmonton Marriage 1849
« on: Friday 26 August 22 09:31 BST (UK)  »
I think I already know the answer to this question, but as so many records are online these days, I would just like to check.

Apart from ordering a marriage certificate from the GRO or local records office, is there any way to see the information on a marriage certificate from 1849 in Edmonton District? Looking specifically for groom’s father’s name.

This is not my family otherwise I would purchase the certificate.

Thanks.
