Sussex / St John the Baptist,Lewes. IGI mystery.
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 15:14 BST (UK)  »
On the IGI, under batch number C018278, there are 200+ entries relating to baptisms at the church of St John the Baptist,Lewes. I haven't looked at all of them but have viewed a good sample....and every single person appears to have been born in Michigan,USA in 1877. What possible reason could there be for so many Americans, all born in the same state in the same year, to be baptised in a parish church in a small Sussex market town, albeit an important one locally? Was there a mass absentee baptism - can you have such a thing in the Church of England? - and if so, why? Or a mass descent of people from Michigan on Lewes at some time? Or is it a classic case of an error on the IGI?

My interest in this church is that it is very significant in my family history as lots of past generations of my mother's family were baptised, married and buried there. My mother was a Sunday School teacher at St John the Baptist and my parents were married there...so this mystery regarding it greatly intrigues me.

The batch number suggests the PRs have been filmed but the whole thing seems so unlikely to me.There don't seem to be any dates of baptism recorded, only dates of birth, which makes me suspicious of the fact that these records are from the register.

Can anyone come up with an explanation?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED Middlesex place names
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 17:03 BST (UK)  »
My family has never known where my grandfather came from, when he was born or who his family may have been. After many years of searching, I have finally found some record of his army service, filed in the Burnt Records at Kew. All that has survived are his attestation papers and they are in a poor condition with some of the vital information almost unreadable.

It is possible to make out that the county in which he was born began with the letters "MIDD...." (the rest of the word is missing) so this must surely be Middlesex. However, the name of the actual parish is more difficult because, again, most of the word is scorched or burnt away. It looks as though it begins "BA...." with a possible upward pen-stroke next and maybe another after that.It could almost be taken for the beginning of "BATTERSEA", except that I know that wasn't in Middlesex. Barnet is the only Middlesex place-name beginning "BA" that I can find on any maps.

No-one bearing my grandfather's very unusual surname was registered in Barnet in late 1882 or early 1883 nor does he feature on any census...although there was a family with his surname in neighbouring Enfield. I have no local knowledge of Middlesex,so am completely at a loss as to where he was born.

Can anyone with knowledge of Middlesex in the late 19th/early 20th centuries help with suggestions as to what this place name might be please?

Thanks.

Sussex / "Parish of Lewes"
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
Once again I am turning to Rootschat's Sussex board for help please.

My great grandfather's birth place and date are proving very difficult to track down. He was in the army in India in the mid-19thC and never appears on a census until 1871 when he was in the Cavalry Barracks at Colchester and gave his birthplace as Brighton. On all later censuses and living in either Brighton or Lewes, his birthplace remains as Brighton. No record of a birth or baptism for him has ever turned up in any Brighton records.  Now, however, I have just received his army discharge papers which include details that he gave at his attestation 21 years before. He told the army that he was "born in the Parish of Lewes, near the town of Lewes in the county of Sussex".
I have done quite a lot of family research in Lewes because this man's wife came from a very old Lewes family and my mother was born in the town. As far as I am aware, there isn't, and never was, such a thing as "the parish of Lewes". Isn't the town is divided into several different parishes, none of them called "Lewes" alone? Can anyone advise me about this please?

Also, I have wondered if this great grandfather was born into an army family and lead a wandering existence as a child which is why I can't find any records for him and why he never seemed to know when he had been born ( his ages vary from record to record). Can anyone tell me if there was a barracks in Lewes and, if so, which parish it was in? Would an army child have been baptized in the local church or would the ceremony have taken place in the barracks' chapel?

Sorry to post such a long request... but this man has me absolutely stumped!

Sussex / Catholic Burials in Lewes
« on: Saturday 04 June 05 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where my Catholic great grandfather, who died in Lewes in 1908, is likely to have been buried please? I don't think the Catholic church in the town has a burial ground of its own. I am about to visit Lewes and would love to find his grave

Sussex / 42 Harcourt Road, Uckfield.
« on: Friday 20 May 05 17:04 BST (UK)  »
This was the address of my great uncle SYDNEY BEAUMONT who was killed in France in 1918. On CWGC website, it gives this address and says he was the husband of H.K.G. BEAUMONT. Does anyone know anything of this couple or of the address? Does it still exist? It is only through this website that I learnt anything of the circumstances of my great uncle. My mother, who was a small child when he died, was under the impression he had emigrated to America after WW1. We didn't even know he was married. Any info would be most welcome. Ann

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / LIMEHOUSE 1841 CENSUS
« on: Saturday 19 March 05 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Could I request a look up in the 1841 census for Limehouse please? Details as follows:

Address: EASTFIELD STREET, LIMEHOUSE.

Name: HUGH DANIELS.

I think he would be the head of the household as he was described as a Lodging House Keeper when his wife died in February 1841. His age would probably be about 75 years.I am particularly interested to know whether he was born in Middlesex or not and the details of who else was living at the property. This would give me an idea of what sort of "lodgers" he catered for. Hugh was my 4 xgreat grandfather and I am trying to piece together a picture of his life.

Thank you,

Ann

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Croydon:Oval Road School
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
My great uncle SYDNEY BEAUMONT was headmaster at this school, presumably sometime before WW1. He was killed in France in 1918, aged 38 and the information that he was the headmaster at Oval Road School comes from CWGC website. Obviously, there won't be anyone alive today who remembers him...but does anyone know anything at all about this school? Does it still exist? Any background information would be welcome to help me build a picture of his life.

« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I have found my great grandfather on the 1871 census. He was a private in the army and was living at  Colchester Cavalry Barracks. Unfortunately, it doesn't say which regiment he was serving with. Can anyone suggest how and where I can find which regiments were at these barracks in April 1871 please? Thanks. ann

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Surname: LEWER
« on: Tuesday 05 October 04 17:53 BST (UK)  »
My 3xgreat grandmother was EVE ANN LEWER born 2-10-1798, died 11-1-1873, buried at St John sub Castro. She married PHILIP PHILLIPS of Lewes 5-11-1820 at St John's Lewes. Her name is variously written in records as EVEY/ABI/EVERY/ALVI or just ANN. On census records she says she was born in Lewes. Can anyone find  a record of her birth/baptism for me please, together with names of her parents and any other family if possible? Thanks. Ann
