Angus (Forfarshire) / Hugh Ross LINKLATER
« on: Monday 24 December 12 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
I am at a bit of a loss of where or how to search for the parents of Hugh Ross LINKLATER b. abt 1882 in Lerwick, Shetland Islands.  I have him in the 1891 Census with his grandmother Margaret INGLES at Murlingden Mansion, Brechin, Forfarshire (Angus) RG12 Piece 275 Folio 15 Page 10.

Any suggestions as to where can I look for his parents?  :-\

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / John PENDER
« on: Monday 28 March 11 12:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

A big ask here with very little information but I know how fabulous Chatters are at finding things so thought I would ask anyway.

From a Death Notice found in a South African archive, John PENDER was born about 1871.  No place other than Great Britian.  His age is deduced by his age at the date of death.  He died in 1911 and was 40.  He married a South African woman so no help there.  The only other bit of information is that he was a blacksmith.

From a baptism certificate (which I have not seen personally) and a letter to John, it states his father is Frederick or John (so maybe Frederick John or John Frederick) and mother is perhaps Mary Rogers.

I have looked at the 1881 Census but can't seem to see anything that will fit.

I have checked emigration records but can't see anyone fitting exactly.

Can anyone find something that I am overlooking?

Europe / It's all Greek to me
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 19:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters

Can any Rootschatters read or understand Greek perhaps?  I have some baptism records from the 1890's and the family can't understand a word of it!

They are my OH's Greek grandfather and grandmother's baptism records.  We would love to know what they actually say but none of the family can understand or read Greek.  My OH's grandparents never taught their sons to read and write Greek and as a result they can speak a bit of Greek but cannot read it.  The grandchildren (my OH), besides knowing a few swear words, can't speak the language at all, never mind read it!

Any assitance out there?  ??? ???

The Common Room / Who would be paying the bills?
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Following on from the previous topic about the 1911 Census (Oh No..Another 1911 Question !!
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,354151.0.html), I have a been wondering about the following situation.

I have a woman whose husband is away in South Africa with another woman during the 1901 Census.  Who would have supported her and the children who were left behind?  She is living on her own and has not moved in with relatives and she has no occupation listed.

In 1911 she is still on her own but seems to have formed some sort of relationship with someone at some point as she has a child with them but this person is not living in the household.  She still has no occupation.  The child's birth certificate has no father listed and it states that she has no occupation.

This family was not known about by the new family which was formed in South Africa.  Who would have been paying the bills from around 1900?

Any thoughts?

Australia / HICKS, William Thomas & Allerina
« on: Sunday 11 January 09 15:01 GMT (UK)  »

Please can someone assist me in looking for this couple?

I have them on the 1861 England Census RG09 piece 1594 folio 77 page 20

William Thomas HICKS b. 1839 Penzance, Cornwall - Marble Turner
Allerina HICKS b. 1837 Penzance, Cornwall
Allerina HICKS b. 1850 Penzance, Cornwall (5 months old)

I have found the marriage December Q 1859, Penzance

On FreeBMD the baby is registered December Q 1860 as Allarina and there is a death in December Q 1863 for an Allerina.  Not sure if the death is for mother or daughter.

I have the same topic on the Cornwall Board but have received no replies.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,352483.0.html

Rooting around on A*****y trees, I found what could be them and it indicates that they emigrated to Australia between 1861 and 1865.   There are a few inconsitencies with my data but I am almost sure it must be the same couple.  This tree does not have the child Allerina in it but does list 3 other children.

Eliza - no dates
Florence - no dates
William James - b. 21 June 1862 Glenelg, Australia (emigrates to USA in 1907)

Please will someone see what they can find for me?

Moira
