The Common Room / Harry Landa or Harry Landa Sinclair
« on: Wednesday 10 February 21 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on Harry Landa or Harry Landa Sinclair b. about 1909.
Harry was Jewish, probably came from Leeds and was living in London from about 1933 to 1936 for sure. He may have worked for a large tobacco firm there as a  salesman.

Later he might have been a sergeant in the RAMC and wounded at Dunkirk 1940. (Seems like a quick promotion unless he had prior medic experience).

Not all sure where the Sinclair but comes from.

A lot of this is rumour or conjecture and I have no search resources anymore.

Of course Harry might not have been his given name. Could have been Aaaron or even Herschel.

The Lighter Side / Old sheet music - will pay £50
« on: Sunday 23 February 20 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for an old piece of sheet music called "Your King & Country Need You More Than I do" by Stanley V. Murrill. This would have been published between 1913 and 1916. The composer was my maternal grandfather who was killed in France November 1917.

I would pay any reasonable price for this. I would not consider £50 too much to pay.

I have a poor photocopy from the British Library.

The Common Room / Roseina Murrill b. Clerkenwell 1909
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 12:47 BST (UK)  »
In the 1911 census my maternal grandfather Stanley Victor Murrill is shown at 21 Little Northampton Street, Clerkenwell with his "wife" Roseina Murrill, a feather curler, b. about 1889, married 3 years and with a child also Roseina born 1909 also at Clerkenwell. There are no Murrill marriages recorded that could refer.
By January 1912 he was legally married at Southwark  to my grandmother Ada Damary so we can safely deduce that there was no marriage previously (no death record for either Roseina). In fact both Roseinas seem to disappear completely.
I no longer subscribe to any of the pay sites so perhaps more and later information may have emerged.

Stanley, by the way, was a bit of a rogue so he would have had no compunction at describing Roseina as his wife when she wasn't.

The name Roseina is not all that common (there are spelling variants) and I did chase down most of the candidates a few years ago and had to eliminate them all, either by age or geography.
If either or both of the Roseinas survived under some other surname they have living descendants today. Can anyone throw fresh light on them?

The Common Room / John Wood, Stisted, Essex C.1719
« on: Saturday 19 September 15 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Offering for free - just postage - 1719 copy of the will of John Wood, beautiful handwriting on laid paper, unsigned. He was a landowner in the area. Bequests to his daughter Sarah, son Daniel, his wife Rebecca, brother-in-law William Browne etc. Stisted Hall is now Prince Edward Duke of Kent Court, a residential care home.

There is second document which is a handwritten manuscript detailing charges of ownership of Stisted lands, tenancies granted up to 1742 - 3 pages very detailed.

No charge  just tell me why you want these - descendant, Stisted historian etc.

The Common Room / British Newspaper Library - Beware!!!
« on: Wednesday 19 November 14 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Like so many of you I dipped my toes in the water and bought a one month trial  sub to the British Newspaper Library. I assumed that this was the result of the digitisation of the old Colindale Newspaper Library which had moved to Leeds (?) and announced that it would no longer make the hard copies available. It may or may not be that and when I accessed the site I found the journals so far were very limited but I found, surprisingly,  a reference to my grandfather in the Leicester Mercury. I had not even the slightest idea that he had ever been there.  When I tried to print this out I found you cannot select part of a page, a single article, and highlight it to print. You can only print the whole page [or double page]. Even on my A3 printer this resulted in miniscule type.

I read elsewhere this same complaint from others and emailed them to say this was a serious fault and that I would not continue. To my utter astonishment they have continued to debit my account through my debit card. I spoke to them today and they maintain that I signed up for a  continuous membership at £9.99 a month. I am taking action to see that they do not operate any future charges and have requested the return of the charges after the one month I agreed to.

For Sale / Wanted / Events / £25 offered for sheet music
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Between 1911 and 1914 my paternal grandfather, S.V. Murrill [Stanley Victor Murrill] had 4 songs published in sheet music form. I will pay £15 for any of them in any readable condition, £25 - £30 if in really good condition.

I have tried for years all of the firms who sell old sheet music.

The pieces are:
You were my little sweetheart - published by Rossi & Spinelli 1912 - No. 60 in their Favourite Edition series - I might pay up to £30 for this one in fine condition as it pictures my grandfather
I Cannot Part from Mother - also Rossii Spinelli 1911. No. 52
Have Yer Seen Ma Dusky Girl - R&S 1911, No.51
Your King and country Need you More than I do - E. Marks & Son 1914 - also up to £30 as it pictures my grandmother

I have all of these in photcopied form.

There may be others that I have not discovered. I will pay at least £15 for any other by Stanley V. Murrill.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Roseina Murrill - 2 of them disappear
« on: Saturday 04 May 13 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Stanley Murrill was a bit of a naughty boy. In 1911 he has a "wife" Roseina Murrill [b. St. James & St. John] living with him at 21 Little Northampton Street, Clerkenwell. RG14, piece 1245. Both are age 23 and for Stan that is certainly correct. I have his birth certificate and subsequent marriage certificate.

With them is a 2 year old daughter, also Roseina, b. Clerkenwell.

Within a year Stan had left this "wife" and acquired a legal one. Now, I know all there is to know about Stanley but it is the Roseinas, mother and daughter that I am searching for. Under the surname Murrill I find no trace of their births, subsequent marriages or deaths.

I have done all sorts of searches - looking for any Roseinas born in the right years - say in the London area but I do not turn up any that convince me as they would not have moved far from their origins. Stan, for example, was b. Clerkenwell as was his father.

So, does anyone know anything about these ladies? :-\

Canada / Upton nee Jermy
« on: Monday 13 February 12 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I had, a first cousin Shirley O Upton. Her maiden name was Jermy. She married a Bernard Upton at Solihull and I understand that they emigrated - Canada was mentioned to me by another relative who also told me that she was dead but he really had no details.

By now their children would be in their fifties and probably grandchildren aged up to perhaps 25 - that is a lot of relatives that I have somewhere out there. Perhaps one of them is doing some family history research.

Shirley's mother was Millicent [Millie] Williams nee Murrill b. 1911. She had a sister Betty [b. Phipps] who died quite some long time ago but as an adult with her own children.
