Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 register surname changes
« on: Monday 18 December 23 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
With regard to the surname changes on the 1939 register, from where did the new names come?
Was it from official records of marriages (GRO?) or just from, say, Miss Brown telling her doctor her surname was now Green, & the doctor perhaps assuming she had married & so her name was changed on the records?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Finding a Death in the last 50 years
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 18:42 GMT (UK)  »
Should I be able to find the death of someone born in 1904?
I know she was alive in 1972, but can't still be alive...can she?

I've looked on www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz with no luck.

Looking for someone in  the Electoral Registers, I found she was qualified to vote not only through residence but because of her occupation. Her husband was noted as qualifying through residence & “Qualification through wife's occupation”

This was mid/late 1930s, did this apply to any working woman at the time, say in an 'everyday' occupation i.e shop assistant, or would it only apply to a woman with a professional occupation?

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Trying to find a JOHNSON/HOUGH marrige
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 15:43 BST (UK)  »
Baby Basil JOHNSON born January 1921, Stainforth, Yorkshire. First known child of this couple.
Parents Thomas JOHNSON (occupation Coal Miner Hewer) & Dorothy formerly HOUGH

I cannot find a JOHNSON/HOUGH marriage on FindMyPast or FreeBMD.
Dorothy was born December 1895 (from 1939 Register) so I've 2 possibles for her, Doncaster or Barnsley, but without the marriage I've no chance of finding a Thomas Johnson without at least a father's name, & he was dead by 1939 so no date of birth.

Any help finding this marriage would be much appreciated, hitting a brick wall so soon after starting another line is frustrating, so I'm hoping 'fresh eyes' will help  :)
