Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Suggestions about possible relationship
« on: Friday 10 February 23 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :) I would love some input about the possible relationship between me and a person with whom I share the following:

'Shared DNA: 457 cM across 14 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 457 cM
Longest segment: 114 cM'

This person has an extensive tree, but no matches in mine. They're not a half cousin (they're older than any of my aunts or uncles) and not a great, great grandparent, in fact, they're younger than my grandparents. Also not a half or full great niece/nephew, my niblings are far too young to have children of their own.

I suspect I know the relationship but would appreciate some fresh ideas in case I'm reading too much into this.

Warwickshire / Roman Catholic Chaplaincy, Wootton Wawen
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've found a baptism for my g,g,g,g grandmother in 1804 at the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy in Wootton Wawen. Does anyone know were or what this was?

I've found the current chapel which dates from 1904, and an earlier chapel built behind Wootton Hall in 1813, but in 1804, as far as I can tell the Catholic chapel was in the dining room of the hall, so is it likely it would have been open for all baptisms? I'm guessing not, and the chaplaincy was somewhere else.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Occupation Interests / Help deciphering mill job please.
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if some kind soul can decipher this job on a census. I'm pretty sure it was in a mill because of the later job he had, and the jobs of other family members and people in the area. I've been staring at it for months and getting nowhere - although I think it is 'card -something', it doesn't fit with any mill jobs which include the word card that I've been able to find.

The Common Room / Marriage with two different dates?
« on: Saturday 04 April 15 11:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm sure there is a really obvious answer to this question, but why would a marriage be recorded on two dates? I've found a marriage between the same couple recorded as happening on both 28th December, 1845, and 1st January, 1846. The entry in the BMD states the wedding took place in the Jan/Feb/Mar quarter. I did wonder if the earlier date might be the reading of banns, but I would have thought there would a longer period between the final reading and the actual wedding.

Does anyone know why this might be?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Does this say by licence?
« on: Thursday 25 December 14 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if some kind soul could have a look at the enclosed image and decipher the last bit of the first entry - it's the marriage for Richard GAUNT and Dorothea MOREBRED. I'm not sure what the section to the right of their names says, or what the curious symbol is.

I've kept some of the subsequent entries for comparison because the words I'm looking at disappear into the fold a bit.

Cambridgeshire / Marriage of Mark RUNHAM and Alice - where to look?
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find a marriage for this couple for several years now, with no luck. I know that they were both born in Cambridgeshire (Mark, 1781 in Chesterton, and Alice abt 1785 in Waterbeach), that they had six between between 1820 and 1828. I also know that Mark served with the 63rd Regiment of Foot, was discharged aged 36 and received a pension - his military record doesn't mention a wife or children but I gather this wasn't unusual at that time, plus, all the children I have found were born after he left the army.

I've searched Cambridgeshire, and surrounding areas with no luck. So assuming they did marry can anyone suggest where else I could try to find a record?

The Common Room / Nottinghamshire lace maker in Somerset?
« on: Saturday 07 September 13 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi All :) I've found what may possibly be a fourth child for my g,g,g,great grandparents. His name fits, his parents' names fit, the place of his marriage fits, the place he lived as an adult fits, and so does his job. However, he was born in Somerset in 1824, but his parents were from Nottinghamshire. They married there in 1823 and had a son there in 1825. Is it likely that a lace maker would move from Nottingham to Shepton Mallett (which did have a cloth industry) for a year? Or am I reading too much into this?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Ireland / Suggestions for places to look for an Irish baptism circa 1835?
« on: Wednesday 26 December 12 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've been trying to find some record of a baptism for my great, great, great grandfather, James RYLANDS who was born somewhere in Ireland around 1835; his father was called William. I can't be more specific because (and I think you'll know what's coming next) every record I find for him only gives 'Ireland' as a place of birth :'( I can't find him on either the 1841 or 1851 censuses, so I'm guessing he arrived in England in the mid 1850s - he married in Liverpool in 1858.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to find James before 1858, particularly, somewhere I could find a record of his baptism?

Occupation Interests / What is a JRO?
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've just spotted the abbreviation JRO given as an occupation for my great, great grandfather. Does anyone know what it means? If it's any help, prior to this he was a postman.
