Nottinghamshire / The Goulders of Strelley
« on: Monday 09 December 13 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

There are lots and lots of records and information about the Goulders online, thanks to a the work of a committed genealogist done over thirty years (pre online records) and I have been fortunate enough to be allowed access to this :-)

However, I noticed that there is a listed building in Strelley called Goulder/Golder Close House, Main Street, Strelley and although I have my own family at Kimberley Flatts in 1841, I did wonder who lived in the house at the time of the census returns, which dates back to the mid 18th century!

Also on another matter, I am sure I have asked this question before, but has anyone heard of Kimberley Flatts?

Be good to hear from anyone..........

and thank you

Armed Forces / Photo Identification Help
« on: Monday 11 November 13 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to link the family portrait, attached to a family member.

I believe it was William Rees 1875 -1931, my great grandfather and wondered if the uniform gave anything away to help with identification?

I have William's military record, but the papers are really difficult to read.

1.     Military History Sheet

Home 6.3.1894 to 23.12.1901 - 7yrs 294 days (Pontefract 1901 cr)
South Africa 24.12.1901 to 24.08.1902 - 249 days
Home 30.08.02 to 15.11.02 - 77 days
Reserve 16.11.1902 to 5.08.****

.....and then the rest is too difficult to read, then later in the document...

9. Medals, decorations and annuities - Queen's South Africa with Claps Cape Colony, Transvaaul and ****ies 1902.

Re-engagement Papers in the Army Reserve tells me

He was a drummer York and Lancaster on 18.10.1905.

Casualty Form Active Service

'4th (Hallamshire Service) Bn York & Lancaster Regt'.  His regimental number was 1105 and his rank was L Cpl.  Date of promotion was 7.8.12, Extended 1.4.14 and Re-engaged 1.4.14.

The rest of the paper is difficult to read, but it is stamped Embarked Folkstone 13.4.15.

Territorial Force, Attestation Form

This form says he is age 34 and a Musician and that he previously served with 3rd Bn Yorks and Lancaster 6.3.94 to 5.3.10. and he was to be attested for the term of 4 years to serve in the 4th Hallamshire Bn York and Lancaster Regt.

I understand if this is a bit of a task (sketchy paperwork) and blurred image, but any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello!

My x3 great grandfather was Daniel Rees (born Glamorgan around 1809).  He was in the Royal Artillery in St Kitts in 1838 (where is wife had their son).  There are some of his military records on Find My Past, but I don't have a subscription just now.

I wondered if anyone on here has a find my past subscription and could pass on details. Here is the link....

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to look up

Mary Jane Holt, born around 1853 Ireland in 1901.  I believe she was living in Sheffield.

In 1881 she was living with James Berry and daughters Caroline and Ellen Holt (although this might or might not be relevant in 1901)

Thank you,

Helen

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Robert Elston 1851 Sheffield
« on: Wednesday 07 May 08 09:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm looking for Robert Elston and his wife Mary in 1851 and wondered if anyone would be kind enough to look them up for me.

I believe the family would be living in Sheffield.  In 1841 they were living at Bailey St with daughter Sarah.

I believe they were born around 1814, but this is taken from the 1841 return, so I may be a little out for 1851.

Thank you,

Helen.

Still not solved my Almond mystery!

Can anyone kindly tell me the rest of the household for Thomas (age abt 14) and Jarvis (age abt 17) Almond in 1841?

They were residing at Balm Green, Sheffield West.

(Piece #1338/7, folio 51a, enumeration district 17.)

Thank you,

My ancestor was Charlotte Elston (born abt 1830 Sheffield) and in 1881 she was living at 5 Spital Hill, Sheffield with Thomas Wilkinson (b1839) and Elizabeth Taylor (b1862).

I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to take a look at the document and check the parish for me.

Thank you very much!

Helen
