Staffordshire / "Leek Times" - Newspaper
« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 05:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I was wondering if someone has access or knows of an online access to historical copies of the Leek Times. I am hoping that the Leek Times has an obituary listed for my grt grt grt grandmother. I have been unable to find a marriage for her and ultimately can't find her Nee name, so I am hoping that there is an obituary with some extra information. In 2007 I managed to travel from Australia to visit Leek and was able to look at some copies on Microfische, but in my excitement completely forgot about checking for her name. If someone could help that would be greatly appreciated.

Her name is Margaret Barr and she died 17th December 1882, and was buried in the Leek Cemetery.

Thanks in advance - fingers crossed xxxx

Australia / Russian immigration to QLD
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Howdy,
I am trying to locate some information on my great grandparents that emmigrated from Russia (via Harbin China) and moved to north Queensland. As I've previously been researching my UK ancestry - this Russian part has gotten me just a little stuck and I don't know where to start - and I was hoping that someone might be able to suggest a few ideas on where to look next. There a few hiccups along the way - so please bear with me.

My gt grandfather was known to us as  Simon (Samuel) Sologinkin. According to his naturalization papers, he was born in Aganty, Russia in 1885. The papers also state that he travelled with his wife and a number of children and arrived into Brisbane on the 3rd July 1913 - travelling on the St Albans. I have accessed the passenger list off an.....ty for the St Albans that landed in July 1913 - however it says the boat trevelled from Kobe - and had mostly Chinese immigrants on it. My problem is that Sologinkin isn't a Russian name so his real name has obviously been anglised - with him not being able to read or write English, he wouldn't have been able to correct how his name was written onto paper. Would the papers of the day have listed the ships that arrived into port and where they were coming from? I'm hoping to somehow find his real name and then trace him back to Russia. Can anyone help with any ideas on where to look / what to do?

Fingers crossed....

US Lookup Requests / Possible Birth Lookup?
« on: Thursday 25 January 07 04:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I've got a bit of hard one here.   :-\

I'm hoping someone will be able to do a birth lookup for me on a Joseph Barr (possible Joseph William Barr) born from 1845 ~ 1850 to parents John Barr (b. 1790 Scotland / Carlisle UK) and Margaret (b. 1808 approx in Cheshire UK). On the 1851 England Census he is in Lancashire with his parents and says that he is Born in St Louis, USA British Subject.

I'm not sure if he would be registered in the US, but thought it might be a good idea to have a look as he isn't registered on the Consular Births for the UK.  :(

I am trying to figure out why his family would go to the US, and then return the the UK.  ??? ??? His father John is listed as a retired Cotton Manufacturer on the 1851 England Census, and I am thinking maybe he went to the US (St Louis) for the cotton industry and then returned back home... I have quite a few questions regarding this family... if a person went to St Louis, which port would they have entered the US by? Would his family be on the US census' for the years 1840 & 1850. I have come to a complete brick wall with this family  :'( and am desperate for any new ideas.

Australia / Assisted Immigrants - Wage Agreement
« on: Wednesday 24 January 07 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone know what this means?

I ordered a copy of my ancestors 'file' from the nsw records office. On the photocopy from the Immigration Board there is column for 'remarks by the immigration board'. Everyone of the page has listed £1 A.I Act, which i'm assuming is the sum due to them under the Assisted immigration scheme/act. Next to my family it says £55 R.R and £4 by self. Does anymore know that the R.R means? - I had a look on the nsw records but couldn't find anything regarding what the R.R means? Any ideas?
